Currently the handling of literal_block in manpage.py is problematic in that it performs font manipulations which may or may not work on any given platform. Specifically, the def of literal_block tries to use a ".ft C" and ".ft P" to wrap around the block, which we found did not ever work as expected with our GNU/Linux/groff environment.
Simply removing these from the def (see patch) rendered perfectly good output.

    on groff ".ft C" and ".ft P" work. Means switch to courier font and back to previous.

    When printed to screen it does no harm (I hope so) when printed to ps or pdf , literal is typeset in courier.
