A error message 'Sample read failed due to communication problem' will occur on Mac OS 10.9 Maverick when trying to calibrate or profile the monitor with X-Rite ColorMunki/i1 Display Pro/i1 Basic Pro2/i1 PhotoPro2.
X-Rite made an announcement on their website about this bug and suggest the users of these products to upgrade the 'X-Rite Device Service(XRD)' to the latest version(v2.3.2).

Since dispcalGUI calibrate or profile the monitor by using ArgllyCMS, then upgrade the 'XRD' will not solve the problem.
Is the X-Rite software installed?
I am getting the same message on Ubuntu 13.10 using an i1Pro. It gets quite a long way through the calibration process before failing.
Please update to Argyll CMS 1.7 (released May 1) and see if the problem persists.
