It's just a checksum - a number derived from the contents of the file, like a fingerprint. The good thing about it is that you can tell if 2 files are different just by looking at their checksum

Offhand, it would not be possible to tell, unless you stored the checksum somewhere. For a one-way transfer, though, the fact that the checksums are different implies that a transfer is required.
