Yes I have. The newer bigIPs are based on a Linux OS, thus why you get a Linux sysdescr return. The work around I use is hardcoding which devmon template to use via the BBTAG in the bb-hosts file, i.e. DEVMON:model(f5;bigip). Hope this helps, ~Steve > -----Original Message----- > From: dev...@li...=20 > [mailto:dev...@li...] On=20 > Behalf Of Tom Georgoulias > Sent: Tuesday, June 19, 2007 7:37 AM > To: devmon-support > Subject: [Devmon] sysdescr problem with f5 bigip template >=20 >=20 > We are evaluating a F5 BigIP 6800 and I was trying to monitor it with=20 > devmon and the default f5-bigip template set distributed in=20 > the tarball.=20 > I knew something was amiss when the first column that=20 > showed up after=20 > I pointed devmon at the bigip was called "raid", not "if_load". >=20 > Turns out the sysdescr string that the big ip returns looks like this: >=20 > SNMPv2-MIB::sysDescr.0 =3D STRING: Linux hostname.example.com=20 > 2.4.21-9.1.2.37.0smp #2 SMP Tue Apr 25 15:38:38 PDT 2006 i686 >=20 > Having "Linux" in the string makes it match the compaq-server=20 > template,=20 > not the f5-bigip . We are evaluating a F5 BigIP 6800 and I was trying to monitor it with devmon and the default f5-bigip template set distributed in the tarball. I knew something was amiss when the first column that showed up after I pointed devmon at the bigip was called "raid", not "if_load". Turns out the sysdescr string that the big ip returns looks like this: SNMPv2-MIB::sysDescr.0 = STRING: Linux hostname.example.com 2.4.21-9.1.2.37.0smp #2 SMP Tue Apr 25 15:38:38 PDT 2006 i686 Having "Linux" in the string makes it match the compaq-server template, not the f5-bigip . Has anyone else seen this? Tom -- Tom Georgoulias Systems Engineer McClatchy Interactive to...@mc... |

I forgot that the old Big Brother had a bb-memory.sh script that it used to generate that data, so all I had to do was replicate it, since Hobbit has that nice backwards compatibility built into it for the old clients. Just make your devmon messages file look like: Memory Used Total Percentage {percMemUsed.color} Physical {megMemUsed}M {megMemTotal}M {percMemUsed}% And a transforms file like: MemTotal : MATH : {MemUsed} + {MemAvail} xpercMemUsed : MATH : ({MemUsed} / {MemTotal}) x 100 percMemUsed : REGSUB : {xpercMemUsed} /(.*)\..*/$1/ megMemUsed : MATH : {MemUsed} / 1024000 megMemTotal : MATH : {MemTotal} / 1024000 |

It seems that if I put the data lines before any other text, AND make sure that none of the other output contains any colons, then Hobbit picks it up: My message file looks like: cpu : {CPUTotal5Min} {CPUTotal5Min.color} {CPUTotal5Min.msg} And the output looks like: cpu : 2 &green CPU utilization is nominal If I put the data after the status, it stops updating the rrd file. I had to remove the lines that normally report uptime since they contained colons for the date. Not sure if there's any way to escape those, but I can live without that info being displayed. I don't suppose you know what DS value I'd have to send to Hobbit for the memory graphs? I've tried using realmempct, real, memory.real, but I guess I'll have to ask over in the Hobbit list to see if it's possible. |

NCV works by grabbing the NCV stuff (with : or =, I believe) separated by new lines. Ignore the "=====" lines in the previous message, those were added for posting to the mailing list and aren't present in my devmon template. However, because Hobbit by default is looking for "la" for load average and not a cpu percentage, I decided to just make another column called cpu_p using NCV and have devmon report to there. It works, but only if I don't have any other info like the status color, etc. I guess I'll just send the actual status to the regular CPU column. |

Pick it up at the sourceforge download page: https://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=3D160720&package_i= d =3D180836&release_id=3D491750 Changes from beta1: - Added optional decimal precision to the MATH transform - Made logging to a file optional when in daemon mode - Added more debug output, and defined the --debug flag in the help output - Added 'oneshot' flag, '-1', which is the equivalent of '-p -vv --debug' and which exits after one poll - A few minor bugfixes. Hopefully this should help with some of the template problems we have been having, as the debug output includes detailed template info. Regards, -Eric |

That's *weird*. The sysdesc option supplies a non-anchored regular expression, so the .* on the beginning and the end shouldn't be necessary.
