Kari, VMware have recently released an open source version of their VMware Tools. Perhaps that this can regularly be incorporated in DL... VMware seems like an excellent platform to run DL in. I am not sure how many people out there run DL in an ESX environment, but my tests have shown that a VM running a fresh install of DL uses only about 40MB RAM and about 100MHz of CPU cycles. Please have a look at the VMware website regarding the open source project: http://www.vmware.com/resources/opensource/projects.html And here is a link to the actual project, where the tools can be downloaded: http://open-vm-tools.sourceforge.net/ Regards, /|/|arc. |

Maybe it needs some additional libraries or device nodes.
It's a pain to debug that, but strace is your friend in that case.

Hi,
Here is an update for an old issue.

I finally solved the same issue on another box running Devil 1.2.12 by
disabling chroot jails (JAIL_ENABLE=no in /etc/sysconfig/config). Not
really an issue as the box does nothing except DNS (and NTP client and
SSH, only allowed from a few trusted hosts), but I don't really
understand how IPv6 and chroot are related.

Thank you all very much for the help I have received so far with running DL as a guest in VMware ESX. I noticed that the VMware-tools that come with DL are outdated. Will the latest VMware-tools (for ESX 3) be available in new releases? I tried doing a manual install, but ran into the issue that DL does not have the gcc compiler required to compile the vmmemctl and some other modules (vmxnet, etc). Since VMware has given permission to include VMware-tools inside DL, would it be possible to have the precompiled modules for different versions of ESX available somewhere to download? You are trying to put the config on virtual HD. It is by far the easiest solution to create empty virtual floppy image file, and copy etc.tar.bz2 there. The config file is as safe in virtual HD as it is in virtual floppy. Only if your etc.tar.bz2 is larger than 1.44 MB, you have an issue. I have some ESX info at <http://trivore.com/vmware/>. I haven't had the time to upgrade to VI3, but 2.5 stuff works perfect here. > Regards, /|/|arc. //Kari |

Hi, I recently posted a message regarding running devil-linux under VMware ESX. The problem I had was that my hard disk was not recognised. After loading the BusLogic module, devil-linux did recognize the hard disk. So that is good! Now, I am faced with the following, how do I get devil-linux to recognize the hard disk on boot time and therefore load the etc.tar.bz2 file off it? I updated the /etc/sysconfig/config file to include the BusLogic driver in the INITRD_MODULES variable and subsequently created a new .iso image with the "custom-cd" command. When I boot from my custom cd, I am still prompted if I want to continue to load DL without any configuration media. I notice that after I press "y" and <enter> only at that stage the BusLogic module gets loaded. So it makes sense that the etc.tar.bz2 file could not (yet) be found. What am I doing wrong? I built my own ISO from source and I'm running it on 2 machines. One acts as firewall using shorewall and the other acts as VPN gateway using shorewall, openvpn and strongswan. As you see, I do not use much of the included software, therefore I build my own ISO which is limited to the functionality I need. But for this the new ISO works fine, except that after upgrading the config, shorewall isn't started automagically anymore. I had to (re)-activate it again via setup. Didi |

If I attempted to untar and decompress i.e. $tar -xjvf devil-linux.tar.bz2 I got corrupted files with bad md5sums. If I do it in two steps i.e. bunzip the file and then untar the files are ok. Not sure why, but that resolved the issue. |

Are you running the i486 version? I'm a newbie. I just got DL i586-SMP working on an intel i830 machine. I'm trying to put (same current release) i486 on an old 750M AMD and am getting errors that might be symptomatic of a corrupted etc.tar.bz On 9/19/07, Charles Mims <chm...@ea...> wrote: > > I am trying to us DL to build a router but am not getting anywhere. I am trying to us DL to build a router but am not getting anywhere. It seems the etc.tar.bz2 file is corrupted. I have downloaded from several sources with the same problem. I have tried to find a FAQ or mail forum unsuccessfully. If these resources are available if someone can direct me to them it would be appreciated. |

With openDNS the lookup always resolves - either to what you want or to one of the openDNS sites. I've never had a problem with my ISP's DNS - however I'm not sure if I forward to them anymore - I think I changed to do it myself. Dick |

Dick, Just curious why you would want your users to get the phishing site, or not get a hint to what they mis-spelled? I do have the same issue on one of my networks and what I did was enable dns on the firewall, had it resolve to the openDNS servers but issued the local DNS as the DNS server to the network, so if it is a bad url the local DNS server just won't resolve it like normal. No search pages then, but still have the benefit of thier reliability, refresh times and speed. Just an FYI, I use openDNS. I find thier servers faster then my ISPs. Redundant, they have just 2 published IP's but they actually have 3 servers in each of 5 data centers that I know about ( London UK, Seattle, Palto Alto, NYC and Virginia ). Thier DNS servers respect the TLS on records, not like alot of ISP's who hard code 24 or 48 hours ( I know of a bunch that do this, like Rogers here in Canada ). They also do some pretty cool stuff, like block phishing sites ( they own PhishTank ) and if you mistype an URL the servers will respond with a search page. And if your admining a large LAN you can also do domain blocking, XXX blocking and webproxy blocking. The DNS server IPs are 208.67.222.222 & 208.67.220.220 Take a look at: www.openDNS.com I've used them since they started and have been extremely happy with them, every network I admin uses them now. They did have one outage over a year ago ( lasted about 2 hours), but that was due to a bot net DOS attack . They pissed them off since thier phishing sites were getting blocked. But they were on it fast and got it resolved as quickly as possible. Mike |

Hi Bruce, Thanks again. For the next release: I'd think it would be trivial to change the initial gateway default of .254 to .1, and this should keep MS boxes happier. Also, this seems the more difficult of my two (former) problems. I'd also think it should be easy to have a script that sets the DNS servers at boot, from /etc/resolv.conf Considering all the other wonderful items in DL, these should add a great deal of user-friendliness for the effort. I wouldn't worry about doing that. If you really want to do something, run your own DNS server on DL. (but then you have to worry about the root DNS servers changing -- also extremely rare). Personally I wouldn't bother. Your ISP's DNS servers are probably faster anyway since they hold the cache locally of all the other ISP users queries. - BS |

Sorry, I accidently sent the previous email prematurely.
For the record I used setup:
DCHP -> Primary & Secondary DNS to values from /etc/resolv.conf
Gateway Default Gateway to 192.168.1.1 (which is what
XP expected, it had been 192.168.1.254)

Will the ISP DNS server numbers be constant?
For ideal reliability, should make a script to copy them someplace and
restart something?
If so, where should they go & what would need to be restarted?
Thanks,

STILL NOT WORKING
Hi Fred,
Included is XP: route PRINT.
I'll also repeat the XP ipconfig /all results & notes from DL ifconfig that
were in another post.
I will say the XP machine has no trouble automatically connecting directly
to a conventional stand-alone router on the cable modem.
It will be working a few seconds after I disconnect it from DL & reconnect
to the router, so we should be able to rule out any XP trouble.
While ping may be stopped firewall, the Masquerade should let me pull up an
an html page with Mozilla, and
that does not happen.
>From the setup in Devil-Linux, I chose the 2 port firewall. THIS SHOULD
SIMPLY WORK.
Since it doesn't, I assume there is some minor edit / tweak. All I'm aiming
for is a simple firewall;
I don't even have a static IP.
I could look into FWbuilder, but
1) a second learning curve
2) I don't see how to use it with Devil-Linux, unless it would fit on the
floppy.
Thanks,
Chip

DL doesn't run DNS by default. The easiest solution is to go into the DL 'setup' program and change the default gateway that your dhcp server hands out and the DNS servers to the IP addresses of your ISP's DNS servers. John, I tried to learn how to do those scripts by hand but it is too
specialized for however many times I will have to do it so I ended up
doing the FWBuilder way which is a cop out. You tell it what you want at
a higher abstraction level and it write the code for you.
I am sure you have a problem other than ping but ping may not work
because of the firewall itself so you may get DL working and not realize
it if you just do ping.
Attach the results from ipconfig /all and route print from the XP
machine like someone else suggested. That should help rule that out.=20
