STILL NOT WORKING
Hi again Bruce,
192.168.1.254 is the address of the DHCP server seen from ipconfig /all on
XP and is the address of eth1 on DL from ifconfig.
Granted, I'd expect something with a 0 as the third number, but thats what
DL gives me. I'd thought it simply resulted from the
initial boot when 192.168.0 was from the router XP <--> DL <--> router <-->
cable modem. However, I rebooted DL with simply
XP <--> DL <--> cable modem and still got 192.168.1.254

If I remember correctly the firwall script (/etc/init.d/firewall.rules) blocks ICMP (ping). I am rolling my own using fwbuilder since neither of the templates provided directly work for me. Fwbuilder is free for linux, for Windows I think you have to pay. > DHCP & ping DL work, but not ping yahoo.com with > XP <--> DL <--> router <--> cable modem How about: XP <--> DL <--> cable modem The DL box IS your router, so you shouldn't need your old router. Adding your old router into the path (as you diagrammed above) complicates your network setup tremendously, and you probably have a routing problem (or subnet problem) buried somewhere in your settings. If you're old router is a wireless router, and you need it for your wireless communications, then turn off it's DHCP server and configure it has a wireless HUB (not a router), and plug ONLY the LAN side into your switch on your internal network (don't use it's WAN port). Also when pinging, you should ping BOTH the name and the IP of the host to rule out a DNS configuration problem. - BS |

Hi Heiko, >did you configure the firewall as the default router on the XP box? I think the answer is that XP intrinsically defaults to the LAN connection.. To be more precise I'll explain: I connect via CAT-5 from the XP machine to the DL box. The XP machine has no trouble when I put the CAT-5 into a router connected to my cable modem. WORKS without Devil: XP <--> router <--> cable modem DHCP & ping DL work, but not ping yahoo.com with XP <--> DL <--> router <--> cable modem I'm not using a null modem CAT-5 between XP & DL, but the XP hardware adjusts. I have the same behavior if I put a hub between XP & DL. >Can you ping the firewall from the XP box? Yes, as above, ping DL or more specifically ping 192.168.1.254 works. Hi folks, I downloaded & setup Devil with the 2 card firewall. ifconfig -a looks good. I'm running DHCP as server on eth1 & client on eth0. On the Devil machine "ping yahoo.com" works. PROBLEM IS: >From my XP machine, I can connect to eth1 via DHCP, but I can not "ping yahoo.com" or ping its address. ALSO: On Devil machine: eth0 addr: 192.168.0.5 (upstream DHCP server is 192.168.0.1) eth1 addr: 192.168.1.254 I think I may need to make a simple modification to a file... maybe ifcfg-eth0, but I don't know what it would be. I've spend many hours trying to figure this out, please help. Thank you, Chip |

You can run it either in bridged mode or routed mode. You can setup the client on XP to run as a service. It can automagically open the tunnel after boot. DL obviously runs the server part. Currently the architecture is one server - N clients. Server - server is not yet there. There is some good information on openvpn.se on this. There you can also download the Windows GUI for OpenVPN. -kari |

Hi, that's exactly the way I did it. Just specify something like leftupdown=/etc/ipsec.d/_updown_tunnel in /etc/ipsec.conf and copy the tunnel-script to /etc/ipsec.d and this should work fine. I did this, because I modified the script to dynamically add and remove firewall rules to enable different firewall zones in shorewall to deal with the vpn connections defined in ipsec.conf. This is a known problem which is caused by the pptp-conntrack module. The
next testing release will have this resolved.

Hello All.
I use Devil-Linux since around 4 years and i love it.
Actualy i try to run a 1.2.14-2007-08-23-i586-SMP and
aparently all works fine but... in this machine i work
whit 3 netwok card (3com whit 3c59x and 2 d-link
dfe-520tx like via-rhine III) after i configure nics i
try to start firewall but i give a "Starting
Firewalliptables: Invalid argument". This error ocurs
whit 2nic script and 3nic script, (i dn't use a bscap)
and the error is generated by
else
${IPTABLES} -t nat -A POSTROUTING -o ${OUT_DEV}
-j MASQUERADE
if
Whit 1.2.13 Devil works fine whitout any kinde of
trobules.
Thanks

Heiko, The _updown script (located in /usr/lib/ipsec) of openswan includes /etc/sysconfig/pluto_updown. When you set the variable IPROUTETABLE to for example "ipsec" All ipsec routes are places in de ipsec route table and the te correct rules are also generated. The _updown script of strongswan don't include /etc/sysconfig/pluto_updown. So you must edit /usr/lib/ipsec/_updown directly bot this is implosible because it is stored on CD. This is a problem when you need iproute2. -- Peter -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... [mailto:dev...@li...] On Behalf Of Heiko Zuerker Sent: zondag 9 september 2007 16:06 To: dev...@li... I would try re-burning the CD (preferably using a different CD writer), and if this does not solve the problem, try (if you can) changing the CD drive. And just check you have a chosen a version of Devil-Linux supported by your hardware. If you don't have an alternative CD drive, then you could try putting the whole Devil-Linux installation on your USB flash drive - see 8.5 here http://www.devil-linux.org/documentation/1.2.x/ch01s08.html#d0e1207 - but it seems you must already have a working Linux system with a CD drive and a USB port. There may also be a way of doing this from Windows - I would be interested if anyone knows how! Dom |

I'm burned the ISO correctly, I think, rebooted my computer and I chose one of the booting options (resolution). It all seems to go fine until I get the following msg: /dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 wrong media devil-linux cd-rom not found booting will not continue, you have to reset to try again I'm using an IDE cd-rom and an USB storage with that "etc" stuff . Before I tried adding this USB storage with "etc" file, I was getting another error, something like: kernel had to kill process I'm new to this stuff, I need a liveCD for learning how to use iptables, since I'm supose to deliver a work for university until the end of the month. Thanks in advance, -- Felipe |

Since that module seems to screw up the nat in general and there's not update in sight. Unfortunately the netfilter team has removed the 'old' patches from patch-o-matic. Never understood why, since not everybody is on Kernel 2.6... -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org |

You're only talking about removing 'pptp-conntrack-nat', correct? Hi! If the pptp-conntrack-nat is used when a PPTP VPN connection is initiated b= ehind a NAT, then I use it... (I should probably use IPSec but I've hit the same problem as a few others = when behind a NAT, the local and remote party do not agree with what the lo= cal party thinks the IP address is, which is sortof understandable.)
