The minimum RAM is 32MB, 64MB should already get you quite some ways (the more the better of course). -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org |

Hello there DL members,
For a long time I've scouted Devil Linux as a distribution to
use at
some point in my future. Well, now is the time, but now also got me
stuck =/. From a few friends I received a nice intel PRO [dual
processor --not dual core] motherboard. It's loaded with 88MB of memory
[thank you memtest86], a 4port-ethernet bridge, and has a 2GB hard drive
in it [I want to put the DSL install on this as I don't want to have to
have my CD drive plugged into this device as I have very few extra CDROM
drives]-- I'm also planning on throwing a 500GB in there and have DL
also be a nice NFS mount for me, but that's not important at the
moment.
The DL liveCD wants to load into memory, however I only have
88MB, and
not 220+ of RAM to be ABLE to load it [and yes, I'm maxed out or close
to it, the slots are full and I'm sure this board can't handle more than
128]. What should I really do to be able to do this? Send it over PXE?
I'd hate to have to do that every single time I turn the router on
[especially since it'd be the one handling the connection...]. I'm at
loss with this, any help would be great. Thanks!
~Travis.

Sorry, shoulda mentioned that. I also had unplugged or disabled everything in bios to see if it might have been a hardware item setting it off, with no results. Since the first post, i tried the smp version for giggles. That one gets a little further, but then gpfs. Don't remember the exact error but i believe it was something to do with the machine having only one core. Was worth a shot. Fred Frigerio wrote: > Or you could try the Ubuntu live-cd and pass the parameters there. > Thanks for your suggestion. I tried it, and it is easy with Ubuntu LiveCD because you can press F6 at the boot screen and add extra kernel options (an option like that would be nice for DL?), but it still hangs regardless on my machine 3 (even in Ubuntu's 'safe mode'). My machine 1 boots Ubuntu LiveCD even without any extra settings and even with ACPI on in BIOS. I tried Heiko's latest build of DL 1.3.4 (2008-01-01) on machine 1 (which is our live DL machine) but it still hangs unless ACPI is turned off in the BIOS. :-( These 2 machines have same motherboard and very similar AMD cpus and same settings in BIOS. Very weird that they behave differently! I am running a memory test on machine 3 but it has always been quite stable under Windows. |

Right after initrd loads, i see for a split second 'Uncompressing
Linux...' and machine goes out to lunch with a bunch of numbers in
brackets scrolling by very fast. about 4 columns similar to-
[c27573003].
Numbers appear random. The keyboard doesn't respond. Have to power off.
The cd works fine in another machine, but it's not the one i use for my
router. The guilty machine has happily been running 1.2.13 for some
time.
Happy new year, all!

Hey everyone, since I spent a lot of time on this issue, I want to make sure others find this information when they Google around. In order to get a 3ware raid controller (3w-9500s in my case) running in a mainboard with a nforce4 chipset, you'll have to do the following: 1. Change your kernel boot parameters and add: iommu=force, noagp 2. Go to the BIOS setup 3. Press Ctrl + F1 to get the Advanced Chipset Features 4. Turn on H/W hole mapping 5. save the settings 6. boot & enjoy your 4gb -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org |

Hey, so we confirmed it's not grsecurity and not DL, that's good. Maybe you're one of the victims of a kernel bug which just recently got introduced. Just > to confirm if they boot fine. > It probably works, but I want to make sure. > I tried my machine 3 with Ubuntu LiveCD HardyHeron(8.10) based on kernel 2.6.24.2. It fails the same way it seems - if ACPI is enabled in BIOS then it gets to an initial boot screen but choosing an option after that results in hang on a blank screen, if ACPI is turned off then the same thing happens except you see the same message that I received with DL about 'cannot load ACPI exceptions table'. So it looks like an incompatibility between kernel 2.6.23 (and later) and this motherboard/CPU. I also wanted to try using the options acpi=off noapic as Serge suggested, but although I have changed the isolinux.cfg and message files easily enough I can't rebuild a bootable ISO. I tried to use custom-cd but I hit a string of errors, in particular because mkzftree is not found - when I google this I find Heiko previously told someone this is because custom-cd requires zisofs-tools but this is not installed in devil-linux, but perhaps I misunderstood? I don't have any other linux installation. But now I just tried my machine 1 (our machine-in-use) with DL 1.3.4 with ACPI turned off in BIOS and it no longer hangs! Eureka! But it fails to find the configuration on USB. (DL 1.2.10 finds it no problem of course.) So I can't go through an upgrade process to 1.3.4. Dom |

Hey, I started a new compile of DL 1.3, but without grsecurity support (if that works we can try a PAX-only). Maybe we can narrow it down a little. It'll take a while until it's ready. In the meantime, can you download another Kernel 2.6 CD based distribution (any of the Live-CDs should do, but if possible a 2.6.23.x kernel). Just to confirm if they boot fine. It probably works, but I want to make sure. -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org |

Thank you for your efforts once again! I'm almost sure that #3 hangs due to wrong ACPI support. So, if you add to kernel boot line "acpi=off" (maybe you have to disable apic too - "acpi=off noapic") I expect successful booting. May I ask you to check it? As regards of #1-2 - I have no idea, sorry. Maybe it's a side effect of wrong acpi support as well, but basically, I don't know. > I think I've taken this as far as I can for now. Maybe the different hang on machine 3 above will give some > clues as to what is going on? Well, probably we have to pay more attention to SIS hardware testing. As for me I have no SiS motherboards at all ( I have no prejudice against SiS but from 300+ boxes under my control there is no SiS one. There are lot of MB with different Intel and Via chipsets and I have not ever seen problems similar to yours.) I can say what SIS is not a good choice for DL, probably. If somebody uses boxes with SiS system logic it will be great if they can share their experience with us - some specific kernel 2.6 options, boot parameters, whatever... -- Sincerely, Serge Leschinsky |

Unpacked and tossed the tarball and went to check the md5sum of the
iso.
Come to find the sums posted are for the tarball... sigh.
What are the chances of posting the checksums on the iso also?

Well, I've downloaded tarball, checked it and can calculate the checksum: md5sum devil-linux-1.3.4-2007-12-27-i586.tar.bz2 aab6a6443d4f98294d8c9cbe1bf5777f devil-linux-1.3.4-2007-12-27-i586.tar.bz2 > How do I change the loader to grub and try to load system from USB drive? So, if the ISO image isn't corrupted and checksums are correct, I'd like to suggest to change the loader to grub and try to load system from USB drive.
