Sorry guys the boot process doesn't get very far, the initial boot
screen appears (with choice of screen display or 'm' for memory test),
after it times out then stuff flies past and it quickly hangs with the
screen here <a class="moz-txt-link-freetext"
href="http://www.edendevelopments.co.uk/28122007040.jpg">http://www.edendevelopments.co.uk/28122007040.jpg</a>.
Evidently this screen isn't much help to you.<br>
<br>
I intend to try recreating the CD, and failing this find another
computer to run it on. Then try a BIOS upgrade. But all of this will be
Monday or later.<br>
<br>
Thanks for all the input<br>

Do you have a chance to test the new DL on another hardware (a newer desktop PC, ...)? This will give you also the chance to exclude any errors on the CD/CD-ROM. =20 #m =20 ________________________________ Von: dev...@li... im Auftrag von Dom Gesendet: Sa 29.12.2007 08:03 An: dev...@li... Some BIOS have some overclocking performance settings that could be the problem. Set to the most conservative factory defaults. If you're not sure about a setting, use the advanced debugging technique of "trial & error". :-) I've seen old BIOS and mis-configured BIOS cause a lot of problems that appear to be hardware related. - BS |

Hi Heiko &amp; Bruce:
I have 256MB (grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo reports 223296 kB). I have had
no previous problems (since I last had a failing hard disk), so I don't
think there is a hardware issue.
I can't access the machine for another 3 hours since it is in constant
use (as our Samba server). When the office has quietened down I will try
again with 1.3.4 and see what the earlier messages are. If I have time I
will try with the MS Memory Diagnostic CD as well.

I have 256MB (grep MemTotal /proc/meminfo reports 223296 kB). I have
had no previous problems (since I last had a failing hard disk), so I
don't think there is a hardware issue.<br>
<br>
I can't access the machine for another 3 hours since it is in constant
use (as our Samba server). When the office has quietened down I will
try again with 1.3.4 and see what the earlier messages are. If I have
time I will try with the MS Memory Diagnostic CD as well.<br>

After google'ing for the error, I learned: "not syncing" simply means that it didn't write anything to the disk. So basically all we know is there was a kernel panic, but not why. Any previous error messages would be of great help. In some cases it turns out the machine had bad memory. It would be good if you could run memtest for awhile to rule that out. Other solutions involved passing other parameters to the kernel, like: #linux pci=nosort text But we're just guessing without further info. - BS |

OK that's not good. Yes please try to catch the message before the kernel panic. Does it tell you why it panics? How much RAM do you have in the box? -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org |

I tried with the new 1.3.4-i586-2007-12-27 but at boot time I got this ugly message: Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! And the computer hung. Sorry I didn't write down the earlier messages but I could have another go if it would help. I rebooted with the 1.2.10-i686-SMP CD and all was well again (including my heart rate!) Dom |

Howdy folks, I uploaded new 1.2.15 and 1.3.4 testing releases to the FTP server. 1.3 now finally includes grsecurity. Take a look and let me know if you find any problems. -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org |

If you give us a list of programs which don't like IPv6, we can slowly start working on it. We've had 3 client firewalls running 1.3 for a while now. A few tiny bumps in the road. But as far as the client is concerned, its production quality. However for the record, it seems pretty much rock solid. -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... Do you see anything in the syslog (console 10) ? What CPU and how much RAM do you have? In most cases (for old computers) the root cause of the problems is bad RAM. Can you replace the RAM and try again? -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org |
