The postgresql compile finished with the new tar. I uploaded updates to the build system to CVS already and the new lfssystem tarball is on it's way. The upload should be finished about half an hour after I sent this email. -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. |

I updated the tar binary in the lfssystem, since all other approaches would have been to complicated. I did not upload anything yet, I want to first make sure it really solves the issue. I changed the build environment, so that it will error out if the old lfssystem is used. I won't upload/check in anything before tomorrow. For now all the changes apply to 1.2 only. -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org ---------------------------------------------------------------- This message was sent using IMP, the Internet Messaging Program. |

Heiko, I give my VMs 16GB of space so the space should be ok. I also check the space (using df) throughout the process and I've always got about 4-5 GB free (even after an unpack). For the file length, do you think this could be a filesystem limitation? I'm using ext3 on all my partitions. I will post back again after I try the steps you outlined below and then I'll post back. Thanks, Kyle Heiko Zuerker wrote: > > Hey, > > the compile problem with postgresql is real, I have it too. > What I found so far on the web is that tar is not able to extract all > the files because some of the file names are too long. > I'm working on a solution, but it may take a little bit. > I'd suggest running a "make mrproper unpack prepare" and then manually > compiling and installing the tar which is in tmp/tar-xxxxx > Then start over with the "make mrproper". > > Also always make sure you got more then enough disk space available, > since the compile uses quite a bit. > > -- > > Regards > Heiko Zuerker > http://www.devil-linux.org > > Quoting KyleJHarper <ky...@ca...>: > >> >> Thank you for your speedy reply. >> >> Yes, I have tried building on different physical hosts as follows: >> Machine #1: Dell machine with hyperthreading p4. Hello,
I got squid working now, with a slightly modified script.
It was missing a group and others' execute bit in rewrite proc,
stupid error sorry.
So I stick with squid now.
The rewrite script is now like this:
#!/usr/bin/perl -p
BEGIN { $|=1; }
s%^http://www.company.com%http://www.company.vpn% && next;
One line can be added per backend

Thanks Björn, My needs are very similar than you have, one http address (no ssl though) serves external network using multiple backend servers from internal network like they were in one server. Reverse proxy and url rewriting. Different backends for each urlgroup. However our system is not an enterprise level critical system, so I would like stick into simpler solutions. Earlier I used pound and I liked it because it is so simple and nothing more than what I needed. However if your system is easy to setup and administrated - high-availability would not hurt. Regards, Pekka Kilponen From: dev...@li... [mailto:dev...@li...] On Behalf Of "Rudner, Björn" Sent: 24. kesäkuuta 2008 12:26 To: dev...@li... Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Reverse Proxying with Devil Linux Hello Pecca, I'm using reverse-Proxy Loadbalanced with heartbeat and ldirector based on Devil-Linux now since some years. In the beginning I also tried pound and had some custom build including it. I never really got lucky with pound since there where some things missing I really needed so I finally got to Apache (using worker MPM, mod_proxy, mod_proxy_balancer, and the Caching (mainly Disk-Caching since Memcaching had some strange errors in the beginning) I never had tested squid, so I cant tell something about that. What I needed was: Have one Domain: www.example.tld with SSL have multiple Applications accessible from that domain: https://www.example.tld/App1 goes to an IIS-Backend-Server https://www.example.tld/App2 goes to an Apache-Backend-Server (Loadbalanced on 4 App-Servers) https://www.example.tld/App3 goes to an Servlet-Server and so on ... Hey, the compile problem with postgresql is real, I have it too. What I found so far on the web is that tar is not able to extract all the files because some of the file names are too long. I'm working on a solution, but it may take a little bit. I'd suggest running a "make mrproper unpack prepare" and then manually compiling and installing the tar which is in tmp/tar-xxxxx Then start over with the "make mrproper". Also always make sure you got more then enough disk space available, since the compile uses quite a bit. -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org Quoting KyleJHarper <ky...@ca...>: > > Thank you for your speedy reply. > > Yes, I have tried building on different physical hosts as follows: > Machine #1: Dell machine with hyperthreading p4. Hello Pecca, I'm using reverse-Proxy Loadbalanced with heartbeat and ldirector based on Devil-Linux now since some years. What I needed was: Have one Domain: www.example.tld<http://www.example.tld/> with SSL have multiple Applications accessible from that domain: https://<https://www.example.tld/App1>www.example.tld/<http://www.example.tld/>App1 goes to an IIS-Backend-Server <https://www.example.tld/App1>https://<https://www.example.tld/App2>www.example.tld/<http://www.example.tld/>App2 goes to an Apache-Backend-Server (Loadbalanced on 4 App-Servers) <https://www.example.tld/App1>https://<https://www.example.tld/App3>www.example.tld/<http://www.example.tld/>App3 goes to an Servlet-Server and so on ... Hello,
I would like to build a reverse proxy with Devil-Linux. I currently run version 1.2.13.
I tried it with squid:
- Errors with url rewriter proc, they keep crashing. My url rewriter proc is a simple perl script that
works on commandline as planned. From squid result is this :
"FATAL: The url_rewriter helpers are crashing too rapidly, need help!"
Script is simple:
#!/usr/bin/perl -w
$|=1;
use strict;
while (<>) {
s[^http://test.company.com/]
[http://internal.company.vpn/];
print;
}
I cannot figure out why this simple script keeps crashing when it is run by squid but works on
command line.
Next I tried with apache:
- mod_proxy_html is missing, it is needed at least in examples shown in http://www.apachetutor.org/admin/reverseproxies .
Earlier I had a separate computer that had pound http://www.apsis.ch/pound running.
Pound is not included in Devil-Linux. Pound, I think would be the simples and cleanest alternative,
running reverse proxy with squid or apache is like using 1% of their functions.
Pound is simply just what reverse proxy is. (Including load balancer too).
What kind of solutions you have implemented when you do reverse proxy on Devil-Linux?
Best Regards,
Pekka Kilponen

Thank you for your speedy reply. Yes, I have tried building on different physical hosts as follows: Machine #1: Dell machine with hyperthreading p4. Not sure of motherboard specs. 1 GB of ram. Machine #2: Personal PC. Uses P5k-VM (asus) board. Q6600 processor. 4 GB of ram. Virtual Environment: Tried both "IDE" and "SCSI" host adapters with VMs. Gave each VM around 512-768 MB of ram and 2 cores of my CPU. Note: Both the physical machines and the VMs all had more than 1 logical cpu core. Not sure if that helps. As a programmer myself (not linux of course) I always try process of elimination and duplication when I stumble onto a problem. I have tried so many variations (hosts, drive types, config types) at this point I feel I must be missing something on a basic level. As you have requested I wll continue to only use the default config. That way we can just try to get devil to compile with nothing but the basic setup to help determine my problem. Also, if you would like a copy of any of the VM's I have created please let me know. I can 7zip them and host them for you to download if you'd like to boot them up and see them directly. Thank you again for your help. Hey, it sounds like you're doing everything right. Did you try to compile on different physical hosts or was it always the same machine? With a compile this big you sometimes find hardware problems you would never stumbled over otherwise. When you test, work with the default config for now. I'm going to kick off a fresh compile on my build machine, to make sure I didn't introduce a bug with the last update (when I added 2.4.36.6). cu Heiko Quoting KyleJHarper <ky...@ca...>: > > I have been experiencing a great deal of trouble getting devil-linux to build > properly. I have been experiencing a great deal of trouble getting devil-linux to build properly. I am able to get the LFS system going, get the sources and unpack them, get the config set up, run prepare just fine, but I receive many build errors. I have tried several configurations, thinking I messed something up. As follows: --Attempt #1-- Host OS: Ubuntu 8.0.4 (fresh install) on a Virtual Machine (VMWare) LFS: LFSSystem for DL 1.0 and up Building Version: 1.2.x Install location: All default and according to documentation (/usr/src/lfssystem) Modifications: Deselected most in config and added sudosh. Problems: Reached linux-2.4.36.6 build and it failed. Upon reading the log in tmp/LOGS/build/linux it was having some trouble finding the /etc/lilo/install file/folder. --Attempt #2-- Same as Attempt #1 except I didn't change anything in the config (I did enter config though, to create the config file with defaults). Also I did not add sudosh. I just followed the instructions verbatim. Problems: Reached linux-2.4.36.6 build and it failed. Reading log again showed an error with /etc/lilo/install file/folder. --Attempt #3-- Same thing as Attempt #2 except I used a REAL system, not a VM. Followed the steps verbatim. Problems: Reached postgresql build and it failed (error log showed "No rule to make target utf8_and_euc_jis_2004.0, needed by 'libutf8_and_euc_jis_2004.so.0.0"). Manually ran the configure and make (inside the chroot environment) and it build successfully. I added the .done_build_postgresql and continued on. Then I reached linux-2.4.36.6 and received a plethora of errors about being unable to find a function (if I remember correctly) called __guard and __stack_smasher. --Attemp #4-- Thinking the problem could be with Ubuntu I switched to Mandriva (fresh install). Followed all steps verbatim again. Problems: Reached postgresql build with errors again (same error message as in attempt #3). Please note that on attempt #1 and #2 I tried wiping out the LFS system, running mrproper, and getting sources and preparing again. No luck. Also, I checked for things like Pax and GRSecurity and couldn't find any indication of them (since your site said you can't compile devil with those on the host OS). I've ready several forums where the problem has been user-side and after a quick change everything runs great. From looking at the system for many many hours I believe it is very user friendly. So I might just be a tool here, but any advice on what to try would be greatly appreciated! If you need any more information just let me know. I've tried to include as much as I can recall. If you need me to use another host OS or whatever I have both virtual (VMWare) and physical (good ole fashioned HD) systems available. Hello Jiri, you could use the tool rndc for that job. take a look at rndc-confgen and so on to put the needed config in /etc/rndc.conf and /etc/named.conf. then you could use rndc status to query the status of named. I think you also have to put this into the init-script for /etc/init.d/named status so this could be called by heartbeat. You could also put some custom script in /etc/ha.d/resource.d to start / stop / status the service. Hello to everyone. I would like to know if there is some simple possibility how to check proper working of specific service in heartbeat failover cluster in DL. I have 2-node HB failover cluster with DNS service and I want to check in HB if the DNS service is running correctly. If it doesn't, HB cluster must do complete failover. Is in DL some simple tool to check if the service is alive or not and is this tool HB compatible (suitable for using in HB) ? Thank you very much for any advice. Jiri Motycka |

Hi folks, Maybe I missed something, but I did not see any discussion in the site about the difference in the server vs non-server versions. I only saw the i586 / i686 distinction. What is the distinction? .. More items are in the server? Thanks, Chip |

Hey, I think the 'install' link in build/.buildorder was missing, that's why you had to run prepare. One thing prepare does is calculate the run-order of the scripts. If you did changes to the top section of the build script, the one which controls the dependencies, then you can't get around running make prepare. First i made a make clean Then i deleted build/tmp/.done_build_foo After that i typed 'make makefile' I could see that the build part passed without errors, but the install part wasn't executed at all! No build/tmp/.done_install_foo file exists! Without any further changes in the script i tried a 'make prepare' After that a 'make makefile' compiled my stuff AND the install part was executed and the .done_install_foo file was in /tmp/ That was the reason i asked if there is another mechanism to change the build/install behavior. It's not that big problem everything is working now - i just asked because it is more likely that i missed something and you already know ;-) Thanks, Olli |

Hello, I've only ran DL at a newbie level. I'm interested in using moblock which needs at least kernel 2.6.14. Would it be reasonable to try using DL 1.3.6 as a running FW? I'd assume a failure would be at least somewhat more likely to cause a connection drop than a reduction of security????? Thanks for any comments, Chip |

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hi! I have a small question about the buildsystem for DL-1.3.x. I added some small packages for my custom-cd. The build of these packages went normal, but i had some errors in the install part of my scripts... The question is: When i change something in the scripts (eg. in the install path) do i have to restart 'make prepare' always? ( takes relatively long time!) Or is there another way to tell the system that a script changed? yes. As I said it's already fixed (Jun,3). I'm sorry, I didn't paste it to the
previous message. The discussion was in the developers list...

Well, it explains the one problem I've found out. Thanks, I'll modify the script
to add additional check for OS distribution (DL or not).

Just FYI:
I have got Via c3 based box with CF in IDE slot (I tested the script on that
device actually). I use usb-cdrom to install DL on CF. Do you have a possibility
to do the same?
The problem is the necessary modules are not loaded (it's my assumption). I can
suggest the following:
temporary use usb-flash (or FDD) to store the config tarball and define module
to preload in the config file, after that install the system to CF from booted
up DL using the script I've attached.
PS. I've just replaced my initrd by yours and my system boots correctly. So, the
initrd is correct, but init script can't find the iso (probably).
PPS. Updated script is in the attachment. You help me to fix 2 bugs - thanks a lot!
