Could I request the following additions to the DL 1.3 software packages, which would help me (and I hope others): - filters for lprng, especially ifhp - from ftp://ftp.lprng.com/pub/LPRng/FILTERS/ (unless they are already somewhere on the DL distribution iso, I can't find them!). I have lprng working well. I assume these filters are available on GPL, like lprng. - rdiff-backup (on GPL) - see http://www.nongnu.org/rdiff-backup/index.html. 'rdiff-backup backs up one directory to another, possibly over a network. The target directory ends up a copy of the source directory, but extra reverse diffs are stored in a special subdirectory of that target directory, so you can still recover files lost some time ago.' Thanks very much! |

2) there's a postfix data_dir (or something like that) setting we could point to /var/spool/postfix, which may be mounted on a disk. The data_dir = /var/spool/postfix works in my system (which has a hard drive for the spool but I don't see a problem with a lock being lost through a reboot). Doing a cursory check on the net it seems that some TLS session data goes there too. Again probably OK to loose on reboot. Sorry fo the Outlook reply. I'm out of the country right now (back in Germany for a visit) and can't access my build box. I am having a problem with postfix wanting to have a /var/lib/postfix directory that is missing from the ISO. Postfix keeps a master.lock file there. That is blocking postfix starting up. Creating the directory with postfix:root access solves the problem. Maybe on your next build you can check and add it to the bootcd.iso? |

I don't use grub because it never seems to do the install-to-usb correctly. The problems I had are probably there no matter what boot loader you use. Adding ttyS0 to securetty probably doesn't matter too much to have even if you are not doing a serial console. Getting agetty to listen on ttyS0 though is probably a different beast since it will give you some errors on the log and at boot up (about it spawning to rapidly). That is all I had to do besides passing the parameters to the kernel on bootup (and that is just to get the boot messages on the terminal) and adding a serial 0 9600 to the top of the syslinux.cfg when using SYSLINUX as the boot loader. The problem was that agetty was not spawning on ttyS0 (remove a # from inittab). The second problem is that ttyS0 is not in the securetty file so no root longin until it is. Now I am having a problem saving the configuration to a memory stick on /dev/sda1. root@cerberus:/etc # save-config -q using device /dev/sda1 Updating file on device... I just tried it on a CF card and it worked great. The only issue I had is that somehow the option to install with SYSLINUX with console support is not there, just for grub. Was it ever there? I got console support working up to the point where the console beeps which seems to disconnect it but I am just getting started with it so it may be user error. Sweet! Works great. Thank you for looking at this so quickly and thank you Bruce for building it last night! Er, well... :-) Notice I said it's worth learning for "many reasons"? It's worth learning for reasons other than being able to use the best editor available, and the fact that vi is available on just about every Unix based system out there (where nano/pico is NOT). But the main reason is to improve your general Unix/Linux command line usage. A long time ago, when I _forced_ myself to learn vi (by using a text based email program and forcing myself to only use VI for composing email), I was amazed after the fact how many other programs use the basic vi keys. For example, 'less' and 'more' use the vi keys for scrolling through and searching text files. There are SO many programs that use the vi keyset! Bash and many other shells have a "vi mode" for browsing/editing command history, which is much faster and more powerful than using the arrow keys to edit command history. Hell, many of the gmail web based interface shortcut keys are based on vi!!! (ever wonder why 'j' and 'k' take you to the next/previous message? :) And when I say learn vi, I mean learn to use it properly! Keep your fingers on the home keys of the keyboard. Do NOT use the special keys, i.e. do NOT use the arrow-keys/PgUP/PgDN/etc. for moving around! Instead, move your cursor properly with the h/j/k/l keys instead of the arrows. Not only is it much faster and more efficient to leave your fingers on the home keys while typing, but those are the keys that are used by so many other programs, like less/more, gmail, google-reader, etc. Learning vi will save time in the long run for anyone who spends time at the *nix shell prompt. - BS |

On reflection I've just edited out the line 'loadproc /usr/sbin/winbindd' (and the corresponding message line above it) in /etc/init.d/samba. I can always put it back later if I have to... |

It's on the main ftp server now (ftp.devil-linux.org). It'll take a day or two for it to get copied to the mirrors. - BS |

I am getting to do an installation to a CF card and saw that you had done a build with some fixes for that. I look at the mirrors and they all have the development files dated around last month. Where can I find the one build you were talking about? Fred |

In the top section you can specify the dependencies. You then use the tool "insserv" to add it to the init system. Ok the firewall broke down once, as our USB overheated :-). Helmut |
