I ran a fresh server compile last night with the latest changes Serge made to install-on-usb and the kernel for the SATA CD drive boot problem. Please download and test out these changes. This build is on the FTP server, under /pub/devel/testing - BS |

I've updated my how-to at http://www.edendevelopments.co.uk/dlsetup and in particular added a section (http://www.edendevelopments.co.uk/dlsetup#dl2go) on setting up Devil-Linux straight to USB from Windows, with no need for CDs. Dom |

Hi John, I've checked in the code for correct (I hope) ata/sata/scsi hardware detection. It should help with DL booting in your case. Please sync from cvs (if you have development environment installed) or wait till the next test release will be available for downloading. I tried to install DL on an Alix board using the script install-on-usb (grub with serial) and a 2 GB CF card with two partitions, each 1 GB. When I try to boot, I get the message GRUB loading stage 1.5. GRUB loading, please wait. Error 2 and the system get stuck, no more output, no keyboard input. Any ideas, getting it to run? How do I get a script to run automatically at boot time (after other boot processes have completed)? I want to kill Samba's winbindd process because it causes lots of confusing log messages (at least with Samba 3.0.30) and I don't need it (as we don't have a domain, just a workgroup). 'pkill winbindd' does the job but how do I run it at boot time? . (I could alter the init script /etc/script/samba to prevent winbindd from starting up in the first place (line 54), but I would rather have something that will survive an upgrade.) I'm using DL 1.3 (are there any plans to upgrade Samba in DL1.3 to the current recommended stable 3.2.3?) Dom, http://www.edendevelopments.co.uk/dlsetup |

Does the DL_device boot parameter support a file name at the end like the DL_config param? I want to create a second entry in my grub boot menu to allow me to go back and use the bootcd.iso.old along with a backup copy of the etc.tar.bz2 file but can't figure out how to do it w/o having to copy the bootcd.iso.old to a different device/partition? Also, is the source code for DL avail any more? I wanted to look at the boot time code and what things it does -- eg. does it update the /boot partition when I install a new bootcd.iso.new? |

That should be fine. I'd try it myself, but I've upgraded all of my DL servers to 1.3. Anyone else running 1.2.15 care to try a man page? Otherwise, have you tried the 1.3 release of DL? I know it's still labeled as a development release, but it is really very stable and highly recommended. - BS > Ok. The result is: > > xterm-new > > >>> I don't know. I don't know. How can I find that? I use PII - Matsonic motherboard, 266 Mhz CPU Intel Celeron. I 've installed D-L usually with configuration save on the floppy. Then I setup the network and setup a few services started on boot. I did not change nothing else. I use the sistem only for router and the problem apears under windows using Putty. Same machine haven't this problems with 1.2.14 version (same services started on boot). ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bruce Smith" <bw...@re...> To: <dev...@li...> Sent: Tuesday, September 02, 2008 1:22 AM Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Problem with command "man" - D-L 1.2.15 >> I have installed the new version 1.2.15. Er, also I can't get nano to recognise settings in the $SYSCONFDIR/nanorc file (or the per-user ~/.nanorc file), perhaps it has not been compiled with this option? (Actually, where is $SYSCONFDIR? /etc?) If so, would it be possible to recompile with this option and to provide a default nanorc file which disabled line wrapping thus: set nowrap This is because nano's automatic line wrapping (which is on by default unless you use the -w command line switch) can break configuration files (because it actually inserts line feeds into wrapped lines in the resaved file, which seems pretty dumb to me). In the meantime I've got used to typing -w, and nano is certainly much easier than vi. > >> - In DL 1.3 the default configuration of Postfix (main.cf) requires as >> data_directory a directory /var/lib/postfix owned by postfix, so you >> have to create this manually after each boot before Postfix will work, >> how do I automate this process (and could this be fixed for a future >> release)? I ended up by creating /home/postfix/data as data_directory - but then I have a hard disk. /etc/init.d/postfix is a better solution as a default because it would work for everyone. > >> - What is the easiest way to configure DL to send outgoing emails (e.g. >> for crontab messages / warning / diagnostic purposes)? I got Postfix working in the end so for now I am sticking with it, but I have put some info about Nail on my setup/info page and if I was starting over I would use it instead. Dom |

Probably the best place to create the directory would be in /etc/init.d/postfix We might be able to fix it when we create the CD image. Ok, I tried a new approach at the weekend and put the USB card in another PC and booted DL from a CD. And guess what, it works! So it would appear that there is some form of incompatibility between the DL and the hardware of my little server. So here I've got a question, does DL use the computer's BIOS or does it override it and work independently?? Thanks for the help. -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Devil-Linux with a PCI USB card The problem is that it's an HDD that works ok on the onboard USB ports. I've tried it with the newer kernel version but dmesg doesn't even see a device when you plug it in. It does however tell me that the device isn't running at full speed if I plug the HDD into the USB 1.1 ports. -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... This could be a device error (possibly the caddy) or it could be scsi emulation problem. I have vague memory that scsi emulation was incompatible with atapi cdroms or some such. Try a USB stick, see if you can get that to work. The suggestion to move to linux 2.6 on DL 1.3 is probably a good one if it's a driver problem. Won't help if you've duff device. I have installed the new version 1.2.15. It's great, thanks a lot ! Command "man" have some problems (the text looks like codes) .Because of that I use the command "--help". This problem is not present in 1.2.14 version. Could you check this? All the best ! |
