We're still working on virtualising our DL boxes. We wondered if for greater security there is any way of mounting a Vmware disk image as read-only that any of you use? Preferably in the VC GUI! I know this is more a VMware question, and I have googled it... Yours, Moray ------------------------------------- Moray McConnachie Head of IS +44 1865 261 600 Oxford Analytica http://www.oxan.com |

Since syslog-ng is the default logger on DL (IMHO) I send Apache-Logs to the logger like this: ErrorLog "| logger -t apache2 -p daemon.err"
Then there is no need to bother the apache of changes to the logfiles.

Put storm control on the Cisco -----Original Message----- From: Aaron McDonnell [mailto:aa...@uw...] Sent: 16 April 2009 12:16 To: dev...@li... Subject: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Limiting/viewing broadcast in tagged trunks Hi All, We're using Devil Linux to provide a Quarantine environment as a sub-network within the normal one, but we ran into an issue yesterday were extreme amounts of broadcast coming from the Quarantine box were causing CPU load issues on the Catalyst 6513 core. The Devil Linux box has a single 100Mbps connection into it with about 3 dozen vlans tagged on that connection. When the broadcast starts, we first have no way of knowing which of those vlans is causing the issue. So first question would be does anyone know of a way to quickly check out the broadcast of the individual vlans and see which is much higher than normal? Second, does anyone know if there is a way that I can limit broadcast from that box (either on a per-vlan basis or as a whole)? -- Aaron McDonnell Network Administrator Network Operations Centre University of Western Ontario Tel: 519-661-2111 ext. 86558 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------ Stay on top of everything new and different, both inside and around Java (TM) technology - register by April 22, and save $200 on the JavaOne (SM) conference, June 2-5, 2009, San Francisco. 300 plus technical and hands-on sessions. On which version of DL did you test it? 1.2? 1.3?

2 alternatives I think:
1. use the long-form syntax when creating the LV, something like:
/dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1 (this is for /dev/hda1). I
am not sure of the correct long-form syntax for hdc1 - I think one
of 'host', 'bus' or 'target' should be followed by a 1 not a 0.
2. use Devil Linux 1.3.x, available from (for instance)
ftp://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/devil-linux/devel/testing/.
This is based on the 2.6 Linux kernel and the normal syntax works
okay, also it creates LVM2 PVs and LVs which are more powerful and
flexible (e.g. better optimised for bigger volumes and allow
read/write snapshots).

Hey all,
I'm having a heck of a time trying to creating a LVM volume group within the physical volume I setup as /dev/hdc1..... it says physical volume successful, but then when I type pvdisplay it says "no physical volume indentifier on "/dev/hdc1". How do I create a LVM volume group named "devil-linux"? Also, can anyone tell I'm a newb? ha!
Thanks,
Wall Street

I took this from redhat. It seems would be good to have in DL:
/var/log/apache2/*log {
missingok
notifempty
sharedscripts
postrotate
/bin/kill -HUP `cat /var/run/httpd.pid 2>/dev/null` 2> /dev/null || true
endscript
}

The thing is you only have to do it once and then it all works OK. Therefore no real impetus to fix it. DIck |

I did find the 'save-config -h' which lists the options. (It would be good if the 'unknown option' response suggested -h.) I think 'save-config -d /dev/sd??' should work, but I can no longer try it. Thinking of newcomers it would be better if the /bin/save-config file could be fixed for -s, my suggestion is to change line 62 to read 'unset DL_CONFIG_SOURCE' instead of DL_CONFIG_SOURCE="". But I have not tested it. Dominic |

Just experimenting with something, I find that if I load DL (1.3.7, latest) as a new install and refuse all offers of configuration media, and then tell it during boot to load without configuration media, I can't later save-config. When I try it responds: Configuration file device specified "/dev/null" no longer exists! Run save-config again with "-s" switch to search for other locations. So of course I try save-config -s. It responds: Found configuration file location used by boot: using device Please insert Configuration Media in Please insert Configuration Media in Please insert Configuration Media in Please insert Configuration Media in (forever...) This seems awkward; if I need to create/configure my 'configuration media' it seems I have to do so first (including formatting), then reboot (losing any other settings), then accept that offer to save default configuration to this media during boot-up, then make changes and save-config. I checked the bridge-utils website and there's no new version available. I downloaded the latest GIT version and added it to the 1.3 build. It's only slightly different, so I'm not sure if it's fixed. It may be a little while until the next 1.3 testing release will be available. Heiko > -----Original Message----- > From: kor...@sb... It's still our development version. We're getting close to the first RC, then we'll put it on SF too. Heiko |

I have a newer 1.3 version in the works, which includes samba 3.3.3. Unfortunately I'm still fighting with the 2.6.29 Kernel. Once everything is worked out I'll upload a new version. I am not sure specifically what caused it (perhaps Samba bug 6186, fixed in Samba 3.3.3), but returning to the previous version of DL (with Samba 3.0.32) gets it working again okay. BTW I love how easy it is to regress with DL: poweroff, pull out current USB drive, put in previous USB drive, restart.
