The file dhcpcd-eth0.lease stores the IP address which you got from the DHCP server, so the client can request the same one again after the reboot. Is it possible that with the new config you IP address changed and that this may have caused troubles with a firewall rule which may have the old address configured? While my system was rebooting, 1.6.4 asked if I wanted to upgrade my configuration (1.6.3 -> 1.6.4). I agreed to the upgrade, and it "broke" my configuration! When DL finished booting, I logged into my personal (non-root) account on the DL box and tried "ping google.com", and it said (paraphrased) icmp open socket; operation not permitted I have no idea what this symptom might imply. (Clues appreciated!) Re-trying the ping from the root account worked, but other machines on my local network couldn't reach the internet; it seems they could get DHCP service from my DL box, but not much else. For example, DNS wasn't working at all ("ping: cannot resolve google.com: Unknown host"). (I didn't think to try pinging a valid IP address from a networked machine. Duh.) I reverted everything, did some experiments, and was able to get 1.6.4 working with an old configuration (old etc-mods.tar.bz2); this time, I did not agree to the upgrade. I did think to preserve the troublesome auto-upgraded etc-mods.tar.bz2 file; I unpacked it alongside an older working counterpart and diff-ed the trees. Alas, I see nothing in the diff that explains the failure to me. I *must* be missing something, because it works with the older one, and fails with the newer, auto-upgraded one... I'll spare you the diff, but here are the files that changed when I diff-ed the tarballs: etc-mods/dhcpcd/db/dhcpcd-eth0.lease etc-mods/dnsmasq.conf (I added a comment) etc-mods/group- (I added a local account) etc-mods/gshadow- etc-mods/passwd- etc-mods/shadow etc-mods/shadow- etc-mods/shorewall/blacklist (I added a comment) root/.bash_history root/.viminfo I don't know what's in the dhcpcd-eth0.lease file (I have only a guess), but it's not clear to me that it could be causing my troubles, either. I think I understand all the rest of the differences, and I'm pretty certain none of them could have caused my breakage. (Recall that the working config file was an older version, saved before I created my local account.) Anyways, I have 1.6.4-2013-02-27 running now, and I can see afpd and afp.conf, so I can take my next baby next step towards Time Machine support. :-) Any clues to help me understand how I broke the auto-upgrade would be greatly appreciated. :-) :-) Thank you very much for Devil Linux, stuart |

Devil-Linux 1.6.3 brings lots of software updates, in addition to support for being a file and backup server for Apple computers. I was very pleased to hear about the support for Apple computer backups. I'm presuming this means support for Apple's proprietary "Time Machine" facility. I've looked into adding this to my own DL box, and the preferred Linux setup seems to be netatalk plus avahi. On my DL 1.6.3 system, I can see the avahi support, but I haven't been able to find netatalk. What am I missing? Does DL 1.6.3 include netatalk/afpd? Am I obliged to configure and build DL myself to get netatalk, or perhaps am I supposed to use samba or nfs instead? Or perhaps I am utterly confused, and the quoted email above is referring to bacula? Thank you in advance, stuart |

Stuart, Netatalk is supported via afp.conf. We have Time Machine support now in DL and it works. This is what you need to add to afp.conf for time machine support, in addition to starting avahi: [Time Machine] path = /var/path/to/backup/dir/ time machine = yes # limit timemachine volume size to 50MB vol size limit = 50000 Best Regards Heiko Zuerker From: Stuart Hastings [mailto:st...@ha...] Sent: Tuesday, February 26, 2013 12:05 PM To: dev...@li... Stuart: As you already noticed, you ran out of memory, I guess updated DL uses more (maybe just the kernel bloat?). I suggest you configure a swap partition on your USB drive (if you have space there), should solve the problem. Regards Dominic O.K., I can do that. However, I'll note that the current DL hardware requirements (last updated for 1.4) suggest that DL will work on a swapless 32M 486. It appears that's no longer true. Thank you, stuart |

I've been using DL for many years as my home firewall. I recently upgraded from 1.4.x to 1.6.3, and while it's very functional, 'man' is broken (see below).
System is an ancient P5/233 w/ 64M RAM, IDE CDROM, a USB thumb drive, and three network cards.
I'm not a Linux guru, so I can't easily tell where all my RAM went. :-) Did I break something when I let DL automagically upgrade my DL configuration?
I'm very grateful for the new DL support for Apple backups; I'll be trying this feature soon.
Thank you very much in advance,
stuart

I use D-L to support multi-site enterprise network with VPN, mail distribution, advanced anti-spam filtering, DNS and DHCP service with fail-over and even (added on your own) VoIP service. It is a very secure solution. However, this requires knowledge of the subject and the ability to configure. Also contains packages for register and analyzing traffic, as mrtg, netacct-mysql, ntop, fprobe or iptraf. Regards Andrzej Odyniec |

Hi, Np about that… it would be no problem for myself to manage it, So if we exclude interface do DL have the features i ned? ie DHCP, NTP, port forward and static IP's plus logging of traffic? Bo, Sorry for the late reply. Just from your questions, I can tell that Devil-Linux is not for you. DL doesn't have any fancy (web) interfaces and requires a more experienced Linux user to properly set it up. does deliv linux support portforwarding in a simple way? I ask as this machine in the end will be handled by users that can setup a normal router like linksys etc.. but command line stuff will scare them away... also does it support logging af what sites the user visits etc? i need that to comply with danish anti-terror rules etc.. logging could be done to to a harddrive so the usb/CF card is not worn down to fast.. hmm... a simple text style interface could make do but a simple web based would be extra nice... i do not plan to run anything else but DHCP, NTP, port forward and maybe static IP's is this possible? best regards bo |

Dears, be carefull if you use vsftpd on DL compiled with grsec. Do not upgrade to last version (1.6.3, kernel 3.2.35). Probably problem is in grsec. In moment of first ftp transmission efect is following: > BUG: unable to handle kernel NULL pointer dereference at 00000020 > IP: [<c013f967>] dup_mm+0x247/0x4e0 > *pdpt = 0000000004bfe001 *pde = 0000000000000000 > Oops: 0000 [#1] SMP > Modules linked in: tun xt_connbytes act_mirred ip6table_filter ifb act_police ... > > Pid: 3683, comm: vsftpd Tainted: G O 3.2.35-grsec #1 /DQ67SW > EIP: 0060:[<c013f967>] EFLAGS: 00210286 CPU: 1 > EAX: f38fa5c0 EBX: eaaf52a0 ECX: e48e1a80 EDX: 00000000 > ESI: f505932c EDI: e48e1adc EBP: f37e30c0 ESP: c517becc > DS: 0068 ES: 0068 FS: 00d8 GS: 00e0 SS: 0068 > Process vsftpd (pid: 3683, ti=f36fc2b0 task=f36fc030 task.ti=f36fc2b0) > Stack: > 00200202 f3bc5900 e48e1a80 00000000 00000000 f3bc5938 f37e30f8 f37e30c0 > f37e30c4 00000000 f36fc030 f36fc030 ea52d420 fffffff4 ea59e688 01200011 > c014070a 00000000 c517bf5c bf395060 c517bfb4 ea52d6a4 ea52d54c 00000000 > Call Trace: > [<c014070a>] ? copy_process+0xb0a/0xdd0 > [<c0140a62>] ? do_fork+0x92/0x270 > [<c04b6938>] ? sys_socketcall+0x148/0x350 > [<c01125c0>] ? sys_clone+0x30/0x40 > [<c0590085>] ? ptregs_clone+0x15/0x20 > [<c058f2cc>] ? syscall_call+0x7/0xb > Code: 46 50 81 66 1c ff df ff ff c7 46 10 00 00 00 00 85 c0 c7 46 0c 00 00 00 00 c7 46 58 00 00 00 00 74 4b 8b 50 0c 8b b0 84 00 00 00 <8b> 52 20 f0 ff 40 1c 8b 7c 24 08 f6 47 1d 08 74 07 f0 ff 8a b8 > EIP: [<c013f967>] dup_mm+0x247/0x4e0 SS:ESP 0068:c517becc > CR2: 0000000000000020 > ---[ end trace e5446380ef6aad88 ]--- > 0ef6aad88 ]--- and kernel stops. Problem is known here: http://forums.grsecurity.net/viewtopic.php?t=3230&p=12453 and issue is present in 3.2.36 too. From today is accessible new patch 3.2.37 so probably grsec author works on new grsec patch. Best Regards Andrzej Odyniec |

All, I added this to my todo list, but it may be quite a while before I get to this. If you send in patches, it'll make it much faster into DL. ;-) Heiko -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org |
