I just upgraded the new servers to 1.2.9, (many thanks for ipset!), and I noticed while setting up /etc/sysconfig/config for the failover box: START_HOTPLUG=no Well, duh! That appears have been the most likely cause of my observations above. At present the USB detection is working perfectly. Hopefully I didn't cause anyone too much trouble in looking for my meatware problem. - cameron |

If I boot from a DL CD on some arbitrary system I find myself presented
with a loop where DL scans for available configuration media and finds
an empty one, or most likely more than one, and asks "Shall I copy
default configuration to it? y/n"
If you answer "n" it cycles around and asks again. This is an
inescapable loop. If one answers yes it copies the etc.tar.bz2 to the
first found partition. In a typical PC the first found partition is the
first partition of the hard drive; not where one necessarily wants to
save anything.
There's two points:
1) there is no choice about where the file is stored even if several
possible media are found.
2) there is no option to say - please don't save it at all at this
time.
Since one is going to do a save-config at some point and since
save-config allows one to save to any drive (with the -d option) it
undesirable to insist on saving the config in this restricted way.

This USB stick has a write protect switch. In normal operation, the stick is write protected. If I make changes, I unprotect the stick and do a save-config. So far, everything works fine, but when I protect the stick again, DL doesn't work any more, it is no longer able to read from the stick. This is the cas on DL 1.2.5. I can't test it on a later version right now. Hi Friends, I have been quietly using Devil-Linux for around 1.5 years, reading discussions, and upgrading my linux skills as I worked with Devil-Linux. Thumbs up to this great distro, I would call it ultimate for Firewalls or Perimeter Security. I am making my first post for the first time for a small help. All along my upgrades worked fine, without giving me much of any problems. With 1.2.9 upgrade from 1.2.8, the 'ldirectord' service attempts to start itself after SSHD starts. I am very sure I haven't configured 'ldirectord' to start anywhere, and tried all my tricks to fix this, but in vain. Any help is much appreciated to crackdown on where it comes from. Thanks & Regards Malikkal S. Sivaramakrishnan |

I don't know if it's the same problem but I have just found (mucking around with DL on my laptop) if I plug in a USB stick it isn't seen. If I run cfdisk (and quit) the partitions magically appear. Do you remember the subject? I couldn't find anything similar.
(No, I am _not_ talking about having the system itself on the
USB stick, only the configuration)
> about trying vfat or ext2 on the USB stick, the suggestions there might
> work for you. Save-config only works with vfat for me.
Generally, save-config is no problem, no matter what file system I use
on the stick. It looks more like the kernel fails to recognize the
device plug/unplug event. I had seen this problem before with different
hardware and older devil linux versions (1.2.1 - 1.2.8).
Since I had never similar issues with other systems (currently, except
for devil linux I only have systems with 2.6 kernels, but as far as I
remember hotplugging USB mass storage devices should work on 2.4.x, too),
I suspected this to be a devfs problem ...

There are some earlier posts on the mailing list about trying vfat or ext2 on the USB stick, the suggestions there might work for you. Save-config only works with vfat for me. My bios has a setting for forcing HDD or FDD for USB, I have found forcing to HDD does better, allowing swaps within a limited time frame, but after a USB stick being unplugged for a half hour or so USB sticks are no longer seen. When the USB stick is no longer seen running /etc/init.d/hotplug status no longer shows the drive being in /proc/bus/usb/devices and there is no longer a KHUBD thread. I don't have this problem on our ancient 1.0.4 devil-linux system. - cameron |

Don't unplug it. You can have more than one USB stick at the same time. The main one will be /dev/sda - a second /dev/sdb etc. If you haven't got 2 USB ports you'll need a USB hub to give you some more. Alternatively a USB stick can be partitioned if you like. A big partition for the OS and a small one for the config files perhaps. Dick |

Hi,
I have the Devil linux configuration on an USB stick
(/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1) and can't
figure out a way to swap that stick.
When I unplug it and plug in the same or another USB stick,
I can't access it any more. save-config (with or without "-s"
just loops forever and the syslog fills with IO errror messages.
I have no experience whatsoever with devfs.
Is there any special vodoo necessary to accomplish this?
Regards,
Peter Daum

I use actually a harddisk (had trouble with my CF card), which is exactly the same as using a CF card. The 2nd part of the mount_cdrom script actually looks for all device names with part in the name, this should find all your partitions. - -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (GNU/Linux) iEYEARECAAYFAkP50+gACgkQUcytMSbs+YWxDgCfXlC2ogPHb5XC8eFUNy6yEHpG ZJkAn2zBFrfTJdYC6BKRcR7f199VVzX5 =0KSY -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

The latest ipset modules are in the current Devil-Linux kernel, I saw those there and assumed ipset was included. It makes it easy to handle large numbers of hosts and ports with minimal numbers of iptables rules. It is also purported to be very high performance when dealing with large numbers of hosts, networks, or ports.
