Alex, Thanks, it was the null password that was causing me grief! I was going to set a 'root' password but I was still setting the system up and hadn't got round to doing it, we all learn! I'm logining in ok now using the regular username and password, which will do fine for me. Thanks for your help, it is much appreiciated. >From: Alex Prinsier <ap...@ap...> >Reply-To: dev...@li... >To: dev...@li... >Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Remote access? >Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2006 20:10:59 +0200 > >Bobble Hat wrote: > > Thanks Alex, I'm a Linux newbie and need a little help setting this up. > > I have enabled SSHD from setup and it starts up successfully. > > I have a copy of the '/etc/ssh' directory with the DSA and RSA keys and > > have installed PuTTY on my client PC. >Make a difference between the server keys and client keys... If you're all new to this you'd better try the "regular" method first, using a username and a password. (no client ssh keys, no pageant). Open putty, enter the ip, and click connect :) hit yes, enter username/password :) Once that works you can go try client ssh keys. I like using keys more, it's more secure, but a bit harder to setup. Though it saves me having to remember all my passwords :) I use one key to login to a dozen servers, and only have to type my password once :) Hope it helps, Alex |

Thanks Alex, I'm a Linux newbie and need a little help setting this up. I have enabled SSHD from setup and it starts up successfully. I have a copy of the '/etc/ssh' directory with the DSA and RSA keys and have installed PuTTY on my client PC. On DL I have the 'root' account with a null password. Which key should I use (RSA or DSA) and which protocol (1 or 2). Do I import the private key into PuTTYgen and save it for use with Pageant. What settings in PuTTY do I need to change from the default? Do I need to fill in the 'Auto-login username' and what do I set it to? Sorry to to be a bit thick but this is all new to me and I'm getting a bit lost. Thanks. >From: Alex Prinsier <ap...@ap...> >Reply-To: dev...@li... >To: dev...@li... >Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Remote access? >Date: Sun, 26 Mar 2006 15:29:27 +0200 > >Of course, use ssh. Of course, use ssh. You can enable sshd using the setup utility. Putty is a nice ssh client for windows. Is it possible to get access the router from the local LAN so I check and configure it remotely. I don't want to attach a monitor and keyboard to the router when I need to access it. I am using Devil-Linux 1.2.9. _________________________________________________________________ Be the first to hear what's new at MSN - sign up to our free newsletters! http://www.msn.co.uk/newsletters |

Having the config and the OS on the same partition causes issues, so keep them separated. I had most luck with the grub boot loader, give that one a shot. Thanks for the info! I've really managed to get things going nicely. One problem thou, I've installed to compact flash, if I have two partitions on the same flash it messes up the boot loader, im probably doing something stupid there, and if I put etc.tar.bz2 onto the same partition when the machine boots it gets as far as asking for the configuration media and can't seem to boot any further even though when I check the file is in /dev/sda1 fine. Any ideas. Again I'm probably missing something however I've looked through install-usb script and I can't see anything obviously wrong. Cheers Mat |

Devil looks a fine > candidate. We also support CF cards (DL 1.3 has currently issues booting from IDE CF). DL will crash if you take away the card, but since it's mounted read-only, the data on the card should still be fine. If course if you got plenty of RAM, the ISO could be copied to a ramdisk and be mounted from there. But this is only interesting for hardware with at least 512 MB RAM and/or a customized DL version. This is currently not a functionality of DL, but should be fairly easy to implement. Devil > looks a fine candidate. DL will run from CDROM, compact flash, or a USB flash drive, or just about anything that the computer bios supports as a boot device. It has a copy of the ISO filesystem on the media it runs from, so it cannot logically be written (even if the media is RW). And unplugging the media shouldn't cause harm to filesystem (but will crash DL). Plus you can simply power-off the firewall without any harm. If you run it from CD, the CD is always mounted and the eject button is locked so nobody can remove the CD while DL is running. Thankyou very much for the information. So basically: Devil linux runs from readonly filesystem. Devil linux is 2.4 based apart from devel versions. To give you a rough idea we current have a linux network appliance, which runs from compact flash, the problem we have is that clients tend to unplug the flash without warning thus corrupting the flash, so im looking for a alternative booting method to negate this issue. Devil looks a fine candidate.=20 Also on another note, if we do start using devil linux, would you mind it if set ourselves up as a UK mirror? Cheers Mat |

The changlog seems to reflect that older versions > were 2.6 and you switched back to 2.4, is this the case? No this is not correct. Older versions also used 2.4, but ran entirely from RAM. Since this is a waste of resources and a read-only CD is more secure, we decided to work of a CD. The development branch of DL uses Kernel 2.6, but we do only very little development there (but we keep the changes in sync as much as possible). The main reason for this is because of the many security and stability issues with the 2.6 Series. Don't get me wrong, you can actually compile your own DL 1.3 (the dev version) and use it. Just don't expect us jumping through hoops to help you. - -- Regards Heiko Zuerker http://www.devil-linux.org -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.4.2 (GNU/Linux) iEYEARECAAYFAkQivw0ACgkQUcytMSbs+YUvRACdFbTwIxrJjAwfXzy7LrrXV3F2 Cc4An16CvxGVViP71sG1o/on6i2NGap0 =n9AT -----END PGP SIGNATURE----- |

The development version has the 2.6 kernel. There are reasons we haven't moved to the 2.6 kernel yet. Heiko can explain in more detail if you're interested. - BS |

Hi, =20 I have looking at your distro and I am a little confused as to the kernel versions, basically we need a linux distro which runs from ram running on a 2.6 kernel. The changlog seems to reflect that older versions were 2.6 and you switched back to 2.4, is this the case? =20 cheers =20 Mat Hattersley T: 0870 160 0650 ext 2004 F: 0870 160 0651 =20 Vaioni Group Ltd 39 Leslie Hough Way Manchester M6 6AJ =20 The information transmitted in and with this email is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain confidential and/or privileged material. Thanks, my misunderstanding of the DMZ, thanks for clarifing this for me. Confusing as if you look at this web site: h**p://compnetworking.about.com/cs/networksecurity/g/bldef_dmz.htm it suggests the DMZ is outside the firewall, I now know better! I will look at the rules as you suggested, thanks for the advice. >From: "Moray McConnachie" <mmc...@ox...> >Reply-To: dev...@li... >To: <dev...@li...> >Subject: RE: [Devil-Linux-discuss] DMZ Problem >Date: Wed, 22 Mar 2006 14:09:46 -0000 > >Even though you have a DMZ set-up, it is not designed to let any traffic >through from the WAN (internet) into the DMZ except what you expressly >allow to go through in the firewall rules. Even though you have a DMZ set-up, it is not designed to let any traffic through from the WAN (internet) into the DMZ except what you expressly allow to go through in the firewall rules. There's a bunch of sample rules in /etc/init.d/firewall.rules.=20 Personally I would NEVER put a windows box on the internet unprotected. Recent surveys have shown that unprotected PCs put on broadband have hacking attempts made against them within 20 minutes of being online. I am using Devil-Linux 1.2.9-i586 and have configured it using the setup command as a basic three card firewall (with DMZ). I have connected a client PC (WinXP with software firewall disabled) on the DMZ network, but when I use ShieldsUp! (www.grc.com), to check my port status it's saying they are all closed. Shouldn't I be seeing some ports open like NetBIOS (139)? it seems as though it is firewalled too? _________________________________________________________________ Are you using the latest version of MSN Messenger?
