-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 Hey, in which locations does it find the etc.tar.bz2 ? Can you boot with the default config? There were a lot of changes between 1.2b and 1.2.10. I'm trying to upgrade an existing DL 1.2b install with DL 1.2.10 to get ready for the new school year starting next week. The PC is Pentium II at 400MHz, 128MB, 6GB IDE, booting from IDE CD-ROM. All three of the current 1.2.10 versions (i486, i586, i686) fail to boot and report errors of: "/dev/tty7 error" (paraphrasing) "respawning too fast, waiting 5 minutes." (paraphrasing) finally, 1.2.10 changes thru initlevels 2 thru 6 and quits with an error message about "no running processes left" (paraphrasing) Another oddity is the initial boot claims to find two "etc.tar.bz2" packages, one from 1.2.9 and one from 1.2.10, even if I have a blank floppy in the drive. The bootup never offers to copy a config package to the blank floppy. The startup doesn't even see the etc.tar.bz2 file on a floppy if I insert the old version diskette. Any ideas from the experienced DL users on this list? This PC successfully boots the old DL 1.2b from IDE CD-ROM, with etc.tar.bz2 on the diskette. ---John. |

Hello! Please find a documented sample /etc/sysctl.conf file below. It actually changes some values to more safe direction. As DL init already processes sysctl.conf if it exists, one can enable it by just renaming it. If you find it useful, please include it in DL. #------ # /etc/sysctl.conf # A note on interfaces: # ..conf.all.. denotes all current and future interfaces # ..conf.default.. denotes all future interfaces # ..conf.xxx.. denotes that specified interface # If this is a proxyarp firewall, you have to enable (1) proxyarp # on selected interfaces. Yes, I saw that. But did not find any solution. However, I have found the problem now. The problem is that pam_shells.so in /etc/pam.d/vsftpd requires that the users shell is listed in /etc/shells. In DL 1.2.10 /etc/shells looks like: root@Devil:/ # cat /etc/shells /usr/sbin/jk_chrootsh /usr/bin/scponly /usr/sbin/scponlyc So if anyone has this problem, either comment out pam_shells.so line or set e.g. /usr/bin/scponly as shell for users. It seems like a small update, but the OpenLDAP (www.openldap.org) folks do big changes even during the 3rd decimal updates. ** ..and one more: db4.2_recover and other presumably Sleepy Cat tools seem to be missing from DL. Those tools are usually needed in the event of an LDAP database corruption. ** FYI, DL seems to be the most up-to-date (even now) OpenLDAP server which can be booted from the CD/USB/DoM. --Kari M. |

Hola! Case: (The free) VMware Server 1.0.0, DL 1.2.10 i686/server edition ISO image, blank FAT12 formatted floppy image, 200 MB HD (/dev/sda) on BusLogic virtual SCSI controller for logs etc. I created a VM and booted. I wanted to create a multi NIC router into my VMware environment and started fresh. DL asked wether it should copy the default configuration to the floppy. I replied Yes. It also queried wether it should scan for SCSI devices. I replied Yes again so that DL would find the virtual SCSI adapter. It did find it, as it has always done. DL writes information on the required module into /etc/sysconfig/config file into line INITRD_MODULES= The bug is that the line is INITRD_MODULES="BusLogic and NOT INITRD_MODULES="BusLogic" as it should be. The end quotes are missing. *** As an end note on VMware Server: It recognises the VMware Tools which are in DL 1.2.10, which is great. It claims the Tools are old, but that really does not matter very much. Using too new Tools, has earlier proven to be a bigger/real problem in VMware ESX. vmxnet is not available on newly created VMs, only pcnet32. Well, you cannot get everything for free... //Kari M. |

Hi, I've installed DL 1.2.10 and try to configure vsftpd. But I can't get users to login. I found some messages in the listarchive regarding the same problem but no solution what I could see. The result after an attempt to login is: '530 Login incorrect.' Here is what I have done. Create a user: useradd -m -G users, ftp ftptest passwd ftpuser Add the username to /etc/vsftpd.users I've edited the 'default' vsftpd.conf file: anonymous_enable=NO local_enable=YES write_enable=YES local_umask=002 #anon_upload_enable=YES #anon_mkdir_write_enable=YES dirmessage_enable=YES connect_from_port_20=YES #chown_uploads=YES #chown_username=whoever idle_session_timeout=600 data_connection_timeout=120 nopriv_user=nobody #async_abor_enable=YES #ascii_upload_enable=YES #ascii_download_enable=YES ftpd_banner=Welcome to this FTP service. #deny_email_enable=YES #banned_email_file=/etc/vsftpd.banned_emails chroot_list_enable=YES chroot_list_file=/etc/vsftpd.chroot_list chroot_local_user=YES #ls_recurse_enable=YES listen=yes text_userdb_names=YES userlist_enable=YES userlist_deny=NO userlist_file=/etc/vsftpd.users secure_chroot_dir=/var/empty dual_log_enable=YES xferlog_file=/var/log/vsftpd.log xferlog_std_format=YES xferlog_enable=YES #syslog_enable=YES #ftp_username=nobody check_shell=NO background=YES pam_service_name=vsftpd I read in the mail-archive and on www.vsftpdrocks.org/faq/ that PAM must be configured. Here is my /etc/pam.d/vsftpd: auth required pam_listfile.so item=user sense=deny file=/etc/vsftp.users onerr=succeed # Uncomment the following line for anonymous ftp. #auth sufficient pam_ftp.so auth required pam_unix.so auth required pam_shells.so account required pam_unix.so password required pam_unix.so session required pam_unix.so Can anyone see what is wrong in my configuration? Hi, I've just installed Devil-Linux on an old pentium machine to be used as (among other things) a backup server with FTP, Samba and maybe later Apache and mail. I have a 200GB disk in the computer. The hard drive is partitioned as follows: /dev/hda1 - 250MB to hold the devil-linux cd-iso. /dev/hda2 - 20MB for the configuration media. /dev/hda3 - The rest of the disk to be used to store data. The installation completed fine, I can boot the system and everything works. However, when I try to create logical volumes i run into problems. I want to 'partition' /dev/hda3 and here is how I do it (from chapter 5 in documentation): pvcreate /dev/hda3 - Physical volume successfully created vgcreate -s 8M devil-linux /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part3 - No valid physical volumes in command line I can never get 'vgcreate' to complete successfully. How am I suppose to do this? I get the same result if I write /dev/hda3. Thanks in advance for any help. Regards, Bjorn |

Agreed - IGRP is proprietary to Cisco. For a small Network such as that, use static routes. Static routes override dynamic routing in Cisco's IOS, so if you add the appropriate static routes on the destination side, you should see some results. --Aaron Devil-Linux wrote: > Hi, > > It could be a simple matter of 192.168.0.18 not knowing where your > 192.128.10 net is > either that has the wrong default route or that you have to add a specific > rout or that > its router dont know that it should ask your router. > > I beleive that IGRP is patented by CISCO so I doubt tha you can announce it > VIA > zebra/quagga but dont know, you might be able to talk RIP or IGP or > something tho.. > but I would go static atleast for testing. > > /Jacob > > ----- Original Message ----- > From: "Ross Petrie" <Ros...@ca...> > To: <dev...@li...> > Sent: Monday, July 31, 2006 11:06 AM > Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Routing > > > To give you some background, > > The LAN at our main office is the 192.128.10 subnet. Hi, It could be a simple matter of 192.168.0.18 not knowing where your 192.128.10 net is either that has the wrong default route or that you have to add a specific rout or that its router dont know that it should ask your router. I beleive that IGRP is patented by CISCO so I doubt tha you can announce it VIA zebra/quagga but dont know, you might be able to talk RIP or IGP or something tho.. but I would go static atleast for testing. /Jacob ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ross Petrie" <Ros...@ca...> To: <dev...@li...> Sent: Monday, July 31, 2006 11:06 AM Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Routing To give you some background, The LAN at our main office is the 192.128.10 subnet. We have installed a wireless link between our office and a temporary office we have rented. The wireless access points which make up the link are on the 192.128.11 subnet with the LAN at the temporary office on the 192.168.0 subnet. We currently have a Cisco 2600 router sitting on our LAN with IP's on the 192.128.10 and 192.128.11 subnets and another on the 192.128.11 and 192.168.0 subnets. These Cisco boxes are only loaners, so I'm trying to get DL up and running so that I don't have to spend silly money buying the Cisco kit. I think that the routers are configured with IGRP, so I guess I would have to replace both machines at the same time? -----Original Message----- From: dev...@li... Subject: Re: [Devil-Linux-discuss] Routing Hi Ross There's a chance that the issue might actually be on the Cisco side of things if you still have one somewhere in this equation. Cisco routers have a command called "ip subnet zero" that must be there to let them route .0.X type CIDRs. I guess older Network hardware used to have issues with zero CIDRs. Depending on the type of Cisco hardware and the IOS revision, some of them have "no ip subnet zero" as the default, in which case your traffic might make it there but then get discarded by the Cisco box. You may also want to get a hold of the folks controlling the 192.168.0.0 network to see what sort of routing rules are in place there as well. Hi Ross There's a chance that the issue might actually be on the Cisco side o= f=20 things if you still have one somewhere in this equation. Cisco route= rs=20 have a command called "ip subnet zero" that must be there to let them= =20 route .0.X type CIDRs. I guess older Network hardware used to have= =20 issues with zero CIDRs. Depending on the type of Cisco hardware and = the=20 IOS revision, some of them have "no ip subnet zero" as the default, i= n=20 which case your traffic might make it there but then get discarded by= =20 the Cisco box. You may also want to get a hold of the folks controlling the 192.168.= 0.0=20 network to see what sort of routing rules are in place there as well.
