I also ment to offer the user the option to run this script when devil can not load config from a floppy. So starting it up without a floppy, creating a basic config, booting the system and then writing the config with save_config. -- MfG / Regards Friedrich Lobenstock ____________________________________________________________________ Friedrich Lobenstock Linux Services Lobenstock URL: http://www.lsl.at/ Email: fl...@fl... ____________________________________________________________________ |

I agree with Friedl, it's better to create a basic configuration script. It would be the same functionality, except the user has to start it manually. Heiko |

I hate when that happens. We're not going to be able to satisfy all situations, I'm only suggesting doing the simplest config, to start with. We can build on that later. > For Cable providers here that's true - maybe not 100% - and they > need the computers MAC address for their DHCP server. I don't know about other parts of the world (or even other parts of my country), but the Cable provider at my home uses the MAC address (or some other hardware address) of the cable modem itself. I can switch the Ethernet cable to any PC I have and it works. All I have to do is power cycle the cable modem. However if I switch cable modems, I have to get my ISP to change the number in their system (done that). > > o Ethernet cables and hub/switch. > > o PC with 2 NIC's, 64 MB memory, CDROM drive, Floppy drive, etc. > > > > Instructions: > > o Plug one PC NIC into cable/DSL modem, other into HUB. > > o Download & burn DL ISO. > > o Insert _BLANK_ FORMATTED floppy. > > o Set PC to boot from CDROM. > > o Boot. No, I mean a really empty (and formatted) floppy. It mounts clean and no files exist on the floppy at all. I'm not suggesting we format or overwrite anything without confirmation. > This would need some protection, eg. asking the user for > permission to go on. > > Why not write a simple "create a basic config" script that can be > run when there's either no config or a broken one available. That crossed my mind too. It's a good idea for a few other reasons: First it could give the user an option to format a non-empty floppy. (as you said) Second it could ask some basic network info, like accepting static IP information or DHCP about your ISP connection. Third, would also be a good idea to confirm some info about the DHCP server, even if it's only a yes/no answer to if DL should supply the DHCP service. It's not a good idea to add a 2nd DHCP server to an existing network that already has one. :-) And accepting DHCP range numbers, with default values so a newbie can just keep pressing ENTER through the questions, might also be nice. - BS |

This covers MANY cases. Sorry, but that might be true for DSL in the US but definitely not for europe. Here you either need PPPoE (PPP over Ethernet), PPPoA (PPP over ATM) or PPTP (Point to Point Tunneling Protocol) to get you hooked upt to the net - of course with authentification. For Cable providers here that's true - maybe not 100% - and they need the computers MAC address for their DHCP server. > o Ethernet cables and hub/switch. > o PC with 2 NIC's, 64 MB memory, CDROM drive, Floppy drive, etc. > > Instructions: > o Plug one PC NIC into cable/DSL modem, other into HUB. > o Download & burn DL ISO. > o Insert _BLANK_ FORMATTED floppy. > o Set PC to boot from CDROM. > o Boot. How to detect an empty floppy, it could also just be the case that the current floppy got bad sectors and now we are going to overwrite it. This would need some protection, eg. asking the user for permission to go on. Why not write a simple "create a basic config" script that can be run when there's either no config or a broken one available. -- MfG / Regards Friedrich Lobenstock ____________________________________________________________________ Friedrich Lobenstock Linux Services Lobenstock URL: http://www.lsl.at/ Email: fl...@fl... ____________________________________________________________________ |

I've said before that it'd be nice to have some kind of a web based configuration program for DL. It's a good idea, but that will take a lot of work. How about something simpler in the mean time? Being heavily involved in my local LUG, I see a LOT of novices who want to get started with Linux. A lot of these people would like a firewall at home, but Devil Linux is not for the novice user. i.e. Creating an iptables script is above their heads. How about a (simple?) improvement that would allow Devil Linux to work "out of the box" (no configuration) for many broadband users? User Requirements: o Broadband (cable/DSL) with Ethernet connection w/NO authorization, which gets IP from ISP via DHCP. This covers MANY cases. o Ethernet cables and hub/switch. o PC with 2 NIC's, 64 MB memory, CDROM drive, Floppy drive, etc. Instructions: o Plug one PC NIC into cable/DSL modem, other into HUB. o Download & burn DL ISO. o Insert _BLANK_ FORMATTED floppy. o Set PC to boot from CDROM. o Boot. That's all! (if it doesn't work, reverse Ethernet cables and try again) What would it take for DL to do this? o Simple, default, iptables script that does masquerading. o Simple, default, dhcpd.conf file for a private IP range. o New/default option in /etc/sysconfig/nic/ifcfg-eth[01]: MODULE=probe where it tries a few popular NIC modules. o During boot, if it finds an EMPTY/FORMATTED floppy, it copies the default configuration to the floppy for next boot. If it finds the normal tar'ed etc directory, it uses it as normal. The advanced user would still be able create their own custom configuration on floppy, just like they do now. It wouldn't effect the power user at all. Thoughts? Am I missing anything? - BS |

This email is to inform you about the release of version '1.4.1' of 'OpenVPN' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/openvpn/ The changes in this release are as follows: This release fixes two bugs in 1.4.0, including a build issue on OpenBSD, and a bug under Linux 2.4 that can cause 100% CPU utilization if the --verb 0 option is used to suppress all output. In addition, if a Linux 2.4 TUN/TAP open attempt fails, the code will now fall back to the 2.2 TUN/TAP interface and try again. Project description: OpenVPN is a robust and highly configurable VPN (Virtual Private Network) daemon which can be used to securely link two or more private networks using an encrypted tunnel over the Internet. You can tunnel any IP subnetwork or virtual ethernet adapter over a single UDP port, use all of the encryption, authentication, and certification features of the OpenSSL library to protect your private network traffic, use any cipher, key size, or HMAC digest (for packet authentication) supported by the OpenSSL library, choose between static-key based conventional encryption or certificate-based public key encryption, use static or TLS-based dynamic key exchange, and tunnel networks whose public endpoints are dynamic such as DHCP clients or dial-in users. If you would like to cancel subscription to releases of this project, login to freshmeat.net and choose 'home' from the personal menubar at the top of the page. You'll be presented with a list of projects you're subscribed to in the right column, which you may cancel by highlighting the project in question and clicking the 'delete' button. While looking thru the LinuxISO site I clicked on Immunix. They have two features for their distro which prevent attacks. The one that got my attention deals w/ buffer overflows by using canaries, yeah the birds ;), in GCC. Well, they are about to stop giving linux away, selling it only, but their mods to the compiler are GPL. There is a really mild perfomance hit, nothing to speak of. http://www.immunix.org/stackguard.html The other thing is format guarding, something to do w/ printf and sprintf, I never heard of it, but i would hate to hear about it by being cracked into !! Maybe this would be a good time to bump DL to 1.0 (or 0.9, anyway) for "marketing purposes". A rush of new users would add real-time testers to eliminate the last of the bugs. > > I submitted it. > > Heiko > > > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > Enterprise Linux Forum Conference & Expo, June 4-6, 2003, Santa Clara > The only event dedicated to issues related to Linux enterprise solutions > www.enterpriselinuxforum.com > > _______________________________________________ > Devil-linux-develop mailing list > Dev...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/devil-linux-develop ===== CXN, Inc. If we go with Webmin,as I hope, and utilize perl for producing DL (and eLSD) then maybe the Perl "Pod" format from Perl would be an appropriate format. Standardized perl scripts exist to create formatted text or html with ease. Perl, despite its weird community, has a culture of pragmatism and practicallity (same thing ??) which I feel parallels the DL philosophy. If you look at any recent perl module, you will see robust Pod documentation. More often than not, perlers include a common example of its usage. I think that the DL mission could be greatly enhanced with an educational purpose if users are encouraged to supply their own configurations and usages as addendums to the standard documentation. Pod, btw, stands for "plain old document" On another formatting topic, XML, I made contact w/ a XML-RSS news feed guru, Morbus Iff, who created AmphetaDesk, also in Perl. I found him on the Sourceforge RSS page, so I am sure RSS is available to DL as well. Morbus is an O'Reilly author w/ several books to his credit. The latest, he claims will be a winner, but he won't tell anything more. It seems to include the word "hack" though. --- Heiko Zuerker <hz...@pr...> wrote: > On 05/15/2003 10:16:11 AM Bruce Smith wrote: > >In my effort to help out, I noticed that very few help files exist in > >the directory: scripts/configuration/help/ > > > >If anyone else is working on creating them, please speak up. In my effort to help out, I noticed that very few help files exist in the directory: scripts/configuration/help/ If anyone else is working on creating them, please speak up. Otherwise I'll go through the packages and create as many as I can figure out. All I have to do is create the help files for packages listed in "make menuconfig", right? No other tweaking required? - BS |

Hi I didn't see DL here. Considering the only other ISO boot is Knoppix, it should really be represented. It should bring in a lot of new users. I found a system called Immunix which boasts some interesting new security protections. http://www.linuxiso.org/ ===== CXN, Inc. Contact: jo...@th...
