Please forward this E-mail to ALL Live CD developer Hello Every LInux Live CD developer, First, please accept my wholehearted thanks to all Linux Live CD developer, your work greatly help Linux community and humanity as a whole--- ME, my company: Linuxlivecd.com especially grateful for works you have done. And now we would like to invite all the developer of Linux Live CD into a club and provide the website www.linuxlivecd.com/developer as a heaven for Linux Live CD developer. Linuxlivecd.com will strive to be the centre of Linux Live CD community so we can exchange and experiment on various different idea, suggestions, response to different commentary and make decision collectively as a group. My company is very open regard on how this site to be done for best serving the need of Linux Live CD community. Please kindly gave me some advise regarding this. About profit, Linuxlivecd.com intended to be first community model of business which sell ONLY GPLed stuff and distribute a percentage back to the developer community so Linux Live CD will continously improve as a result, part will be invested for basic infrastructure and part will (hopefully ;-p) paid the bill for me and a co-worker.(I do the tech/PR side, he do the web side) Our company will take care of the dirty work of commercializing Linux Live CD.(including marketing, branding, PR and tech support) Linuxlivecd.com currently targetting the biggest market in the making: China(I am Chinese living in HK), which I can NOT imagine just how powerful Linux will be with the addition of many tens of million of users, and tens of thousands of programmers. But again this is only a tentative plan subject to change by YOUR advise. Together we can conquer country by country, continent by continent and one day the whole Earth. As a developer you have the final say on deciding whether your want to sell your product, but please gain us a privilege to be the FIRST selling your product and be the FIRST to translate your distro into Chinese. And developer automatically gained unlimited membership for all the service this website provided(plus the developer website) including but not limited to free forum/technical resource/space to sell and store GPLed distros or softwares (we don't charge for the transation)/survey/tools/user feedback/E-mail/website/ads space/Periodical review, idea and suggestion by me and other developers. We will also help you market your product if you agree to do so. But if you only like to develop, it is up to you. However, everything is strictly under GPL and no single person "own" any product or ideas. The number of feature will increase as we gain foothold on the market. The goal of linuxlivecd.com is 1) Increase the popularity of Linux, 2.) Quicken the mass adaptation of Linux via Live CD; 3.)United a viable, financially self-substainable, reputable ,extremely creative and sensitive-to-user Linux Live CD community; 4.) Developing the world's biggest market for Open Source OS/software development (especially Southeastern Asia). I believe by helping each other in this way we will both win. We would ask you for the honour of migrating your Linux Live CD homepage in our company's website. (Certainly you can keep the original, I just ask for a presence in linuxlivecd.com) It will be available very soon. Let's work together toward for the sake of Linux! I am prepared to do the best I can to assist you, would you like to join Linux Live CD Movement? IMO, we also badly need a way to detect network cards, instead of making the user input or select a module. I'm fairly stuck there. > Doesn't need to be much and you can "steel" it from "make menuconfig", > which is stolen from the Linux kernel config. ;-) I started looking at lxconfig a little. The first problem I noticed is lxconfig doesn't seem to exist on the CD, it appears to be only in the development system. What's the best way to solve that? Make it a package? I'm also having problems finding documentation on lxdialog. Do you know of a good reference somewhere? I see Redhat has a package called "dialog" which lxdialog is based on. The "dialog" package _seems_ to have more options than lxdialog (and some documentation too :) However, I don't see where "dialog" has a help system. Do you know the differences between the two? - BS |

Hey, I took a quick look yesterday and the first thing I noticed is that we = need a help system. Doesn't need to be much and you can "steel" it from "make menuconfig", which is stolen from the Linux kernel config. ;-) I think it would be best to just show this help (only a brief explanati= on) above the parameter before the user enters something. I didn't like that the user has to enter yes or no, I would suggest tha= t you let him switch between those values with i.e. SPACE . OK have to go back to work now.... cya Heiko On 06/04/2003 10:46:51 AM Bruce Smith wrote: >I've uploaded my first copy of a DL setup script for testing. > >ftp://ftp.devil-linux.org/pub/devel/testing/scripts/setupscript-200306= 04 >.tgz > >I'd appreciate it if people would download it, untar it in an _empty_ >directory, run & play with "./setuputil", and comment back. > >Selections "1, 2, and 3" only modify test files in your local director= y, >so you don't have to worry about it screwing up your running system. > >Selections "p" and "s", actually run "passwd", and "save-config", so b= e >careful with those. > >You can test this script on other systems (does not have to be DL), an= d >you don't need to be root to run the script for testing. > >I'm not totally happy with it yet, but I'm kind of stuck in a couple >places, so I'd like to hear improvement ideas from others. > >Thanks in advance, Bruce. = |

I've uploaded my first copy of a DL setup script for testing. ftp://ftp.devil-linux.org/pub/devel/testing/scripts/setupscript-20030604.tgz I'd appreciate it if people would download it, untar it in an _empty_ directory, run & play with "./setuputil", and comment back. Selections "1, 2, and 3" only modify test files in your local directory, so you don't have to worry about it screwing up your running system. Selections "p" and "s", actually run "passwd", and "save-config", so be careful with those. You can test this script on other systems (does not have to be DL), and you don't need to be root to run the script for testing. I'm not totally happy with it yet, but I'm kind of stuck in a couple places, so I'd like to hear improvement ideas from others. Thanks in advance, Bruce. |

OK, after some more investigation, I'm not convinced it's NOT a bug that we need to worry about with DL. "vi" works fine from a virtual console (as the "TERM=linux" implies). I'm only seeing the problem when I slogin from a gnome-terminal window. I tested "vi" from a regular "xterm" window, and it works there too. It's nothing we need to worry about. Sorry! - BS |

What is the exact problem? I'm not familiar with vi, so you probably have to write me down the 'secret vi key combinations'. ;-) Which SSH client do you use? When I recall it correctly, DL 0.5 still use the Busybox vi, so the problem could also be in the vim package. Heiko |

Please use the developer mailinglist for a question that is related to build system. Please no further replies to this thread on the normal user mailinglist. Thanks. The kernel build is up to Heiko, he'll have to answer that question. -- MfG / Regards Friedrich Lobenstock ____________________________________________________________________ Friedrich Lobenstock Linux Services Lobenstock URL: http://www.lsl.at/ Email: fl...@fl... ____________________________________________________________________ |

This email is to inform you about the release of version '3.1.9' of 'procps' through freshmeat.net. All URLs and other useful information can be found at http://freshmeat.net/projects/procps/ The changes in this release are as follows: This release fixes memory usage reporting when gcc 3.x is used on IA-64 and Alpha. Other 64-bit platforms may have be affected. Documentation has improved a bit, and vmstat now lets you choose display units. Project description: procps is a package of utilities which includes ps, vmstat, top, w, skill, snice, pgrep, pkill, free, sysctl, pmap, uptime, and kill. These utilities report what is running, who is logged in, how long the system has been running, and what is using up memory. They can be used to kill processes and change run-time kernel configuration values. If you would like to cancel subscription to releases of this project, login to freshmeat.net and choose 'home' from the personal menubar at the top of the page. You'll be presented with a list of projects you're subscribed to in the right column, which you may cancel by highlighting the project in question and clicking the 'delete' button. I'll be happy to just have the config on USB stick. But I bought one little stick for the config, and one big stick for the whole thing. I can do both. :-) > >>NOTE: save-config doesn't support it yet, you have to do it by hand. > > > > How is the script going to know if it should save to floppy or USB? > > I didn't decide this yet, so far I probably go this road: > check for floppy, if not present check for USB memory device. I would recommend checking for USB first. Most computers have a floppy drive, and it will waste too much time to grind the floppy before looking for the USB device. Also, you can probably test if a USB stick exists in /proc somehow. > if etc.tar.bz2 found, save > otherwise offer to create new config, but list all available config > storage devices and make user select one An optional parameter on save-config so we can specify, would be good. - BS |
