Okay, I will post this issue again since someone deleted it because they made the (mistaken) assumption that just because they were not having the same problems, it must be a problem with my computer.
Note; i have had this issue on 3 different computers. One computer might be an issue with the computer. 3 computers including one with a fresh install of Windows 7 x64 is not an issue with the computers.
Final Fantasy III will not go past the first screens with "SquareEnix" and "Licensed by Nintendo" in it. I have tried switching from SoftRasterizer to OpenGL, tried switching the sound processing settings, even tried dissabling the cheats totally. No go, it goes past those first two screens and then just locks up.
I've waited 10 minutes now for it to try to get past those screens and no joy, it just sits there totally black not doing anything. No sound, no video, absolutely nothing.

Okay, I was able to fix this issue after tinkering and talking with a friend. Apparently, you have to enable "Advanced Bus-Level Timing" in order to have this game work correctly.
thanks for checking back, we made note of it on the compatibility thread on our website.
the issue wasnt deleted, it was moved to the support tracker.

thanks, CASE CLOSED
Nowadays, changing the jit block size might fix it too.
