#165 The "paths" menu disappeared in latest nightly build
Hello. Denise is a great emulator and I’ve been using it a lot, for the past few months. However, there’s one thing I’m not quite clear on, after updating to the latest nightly build.
Now the "Paths" menu under "C64/Software" has suddenly disappeared, here on my PC, when this Denise nightly is running. Is this a bug, or has the menu been moved somewhere else? I haven't been able to find it anywhere so far and you need that menu, to pre-configure the folders, where all the various C64 filetypes are stored on the harddrive of the PC, right? Or am I overlooking something here?

Yes, that was cut without replacement. Denise opens the file dialog starting at the last folder from which a file was loaded. It distinguishes between file types: disk, tape, PRG, CRT, and hard disk.
Aaaah, it opens the last folder, from where a file was loaded. Okay, I see now. Hm, don't know if that's better, than having default-folders set, because, speaking for myself here, a newly downloaded file, that I want to test, I open somewhere else, than from my normal C64 file-archiv. But do I really want to launch from this new folder again, the next time, just because I launched one downloaded file from there once? I'm not so sure. Normally I want to load from my standard archiv again then and not from this other folder again. Don't know, how's the handling of other users here, I can only speak for myself?

Entry from another user of Denise. I also recognized that thing with the "paths" folder being deleted. Sad thing, because in my opinion, this menu maked sense.
And why all icons in the Denise menue are now missing, when I open the newest nightly on my Win7 machine? Why are things suddenly being deleted for no reason, things that didn't bother anyone, but enabled functionality on older systems?
Good backward-compatibility was always one of Denise's strengths. Now, all of a sudden, Denise seems to be following the VICE path, for absolutely no compelling reason. I never understood, why the perfectly functioning 'exclusive fullscreen mode' was done away with and now this thing here, with the deleted icons. Do they want to get rid of users of older systems now, even though the emulator actually works very well on older PC's so far?
That’s not true at all. The menu icons are all there in Windows 7.
No, they are no there! I use Win7 with Win-XP look, since alot of years. Never had a problem in any program so far and now, the Icons in Denise are all gone. I could use normal Win7 look, but I hate it and only for one program, this would make no sense.
I have no problems in other C64 emulators, like for example HOXS, Emu64, CCS64 and Z64K with my Win7, only in Denise these problems appears now, because for no necessary reason, the Win-XP icons was removed and it seems, that Win7, when running in Win-XP look, also use these icons. Why they was deleted? Who was bothered or negatively affected by these icons? No Windows 8 users, no Windows 10 users, no Windows 11 users. Nobody. Not really understandable, unless the goal is, to get rid of all users with older hardware now, even though Denise always ran well on those older machines, right up to the latest version.
Windows XP is no longer officially supported by Denise. For WinXP, menu icons must be provided as .ico files. This means that all icons would have to exist in two formats: PNG and ICO. Maintaining and managing these additional .ico files would be pointless for an unsupported OS.
But Win7 is supported and I use this operating-system. The Win-XP view in it, is just a setting. The XP-icons was already there, they don't create additional work and they did their job perfect for years. Why deleting them now, without a real need? Who was bothered by these icons? Where's the sense. Looks like, it's just a hassle for users with older PC's.

Since I no longer perform tests for XP, a major problem could arise at any time. In that case, the missing icons would be the least of the problems.
