Since installing 4.8.3, resident set size on my (headless, shared between ~20 people) davmail server has risen to 1.2G since I last restarted it 48 hours ago. It was up to 4G when I restarted. Virtual size is 6.5G.

Well, it's hard to tell without more information, maybe some of your users have very large folders ?
=> the memory footprint of DavMail is mainly related to IMAP folder handling.

Nothing fundamentally changed in 4.8.3, so I don't have any precise clue.
