Having gotten a basic handle on using dar to archive my backup RAID array, I am now looking into using par2 to provide additional protection against modest amounts of file corruption on the dar slices. I have a few questions, however. The default for par2 is to create a number of .par2 files for any large source file. Given the dar slices in my case are going to be huge - about 500 Gigabytes each - by default par2 will be creating huge numbers of .par2 files for each slice, and perhaps 3 or 4 (or more) times that on each backup drive. Is there any real advantage to this? One can use the -n option in par2 to limit the number of par2 files. Would this be prudent? Given the vast size of the dar slices, should I increase the memory usage for par2? Will setting -n 1 cause problems or make the process unnecessarily slow? |
