Hola CSCMail is the best mail client I have found for the linux/gnome environment yet, and I went through quite a few before finding this one. Thanks to the dev team...! My question is that when I first installed CSC, I didn't have gtkhtml installed. I recently installed the gnome rpm, but csc still starts with the following message: HTML Widget is: text I am a relative linux newbie, maybe I missed a step. The libgtkhtml.so.6(.0.0) libs are in /usr/lib.... I am using csc 1.7.9 with mysql on Red Hat 7. Any advice/help would be appreciated. Thanks again! ssjMT |

There is already a utility that will convert Outlook mailboxes to mbox format (which you can then import into CSCMail (all versions)) Do a search on freshmeat.net ... I don't remember the name of the utility off hand. As for the addressbook format, I am not sure about importing that ... I'll look into it... > 2. Actually, CSCMail 2.0 supports 4 different layout modes, (user selectable) ... Take a look at http://www.cyberdeck.org/screenshots (for May 17th, 2000 ... yeah, theres been a huge lapse in development) to see the 4 default view modes... > 3. What database backend are you using? Cause for me, using PostgreSQL, the numbers stay in sync (although mail only sits in the Outbox for a few seconds prior to moving to the "Sent Items" folder since I have "send immediately" turned on.) If you are using CSV (text files) to store your mail, the delay is most likely due to the slowness of CSV. I recommend upgrading to CSCMail 1.7.x as well as switching to a real DB for storage... however, I really think I'll have the C version functional within a couple of weeks, so you may want to wait for it... -CZ ----- Original Message ----- From: "nick" <nic...@nt...> To: <csc...@li...> Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2001 2:35 PM Subject: Re: [CSCMail-Users] Problem installing CSC Mail > On 21 Mar 2001 19:20:41 GMT, nick said: > > > On Wed, 21 Mar 2001 13:19:35 -0500, Steven Kordik said: > > > > > Thanks! There it is. It must be an issue of updating the main screen from the database. Is it a feature or a bug? I click send and the Compose Message window closes, but the Outbox still says 0. Can I throw three usability issues into the melting pot? I'm not a programmer, so I doubt I'll be much help fixing them, but I'm interested in questions of usability, so I guess you can rely on me to find some enhancements for you to think about... 1. How easy would it be to write a translator to take Outlook files - mail folders and, crucially, the address book, and import them into CSCMail - ideally merging them with the existing folders / address book, since by the time CSC 2.0 is out I will doubtless have essential info in both systems. There must be increasing numbers of people like me who're moving to linux from Windows, and want to bring the data in our MS applications with us. 2. The layout of panels in the CSCMail window is wasteful of space. By giving the message window the whole of the lower panel (colspan=2, if you like) even though messages are only 70-odd characters wide, there's a lot of white space - at least there is on my 1600x1200 screen. Outlook has a more interesting and useful layout, giving the folders a left hand column all to themselves (rowspan = 2, say 20% of the available width) and then splitting the right hand section horizontally to give the message list above the actual message window. Can I suggest you switch to that layout? It really is far more effective, since you don't have to scroll to see the different folders in the list, and the message window can be as large as possible, enabling most messages to be read in preview mode. 3. I like the colour co-ordinating quoting idea, but the line wrapping throws it out. When a section of twice quoted text is quoted for the third time, it pushes some text beyond the column-limit. Thus it will show up as only once-quoted, and will therefore be a different colour. Can you not differentiate between hard returns inserted by a user and line wraps inserted by email software, and continue with the same colour highlighting until you reach the end of a paragraph, even if some of the lines appear to have fewer > characters? Sorry if you've already considered these ideas - just things that strike me on first impressions of CSC. On the whole, I like it, by the way. Thanks! I have kinda left the Perl install script as a low priority since I am focusing on the c-client based C version. This gives CSCMail IMAP support, no Database dependancies, faster at everything, NNTP support, "normal" local mailstore, and other cool features. (use Pine and CSCMail to read the same mailstore if you like, as CSCMail can read ~/mail or whatever format you keep your local mail in.) This means there is no need for a "cscmail console" version (just use Pine) and that CSCMail will support whatever protocols and mailstores the c-client supports (right now, mbox, maildir and some others, as well as POP3, IMAP4, SMTP, NNTP) Hope to have something usable released soon... (I recently switched to an IMAP based mailstore for my personal mail, and since CSCMail didn't support IMAP, this has "re-energized" my development efforts.) -Count Zero P.S. Yes you will be able to migrate from CSCMail perl to CSCMail 2.0 ... If you run 1.7.x I have recently fixed the MBOX export feature so that it makes a c-client compatible mbox.... I will be adding further enhancements to this export (right now the dates get munged) and also include a "standalone" export script that will walk your folder tree and export all your mail to mbox format ----- Original Message ----- From: "Nick Holden" <nic...@nt...> To: <csc...@li...> Cc: <nic...@nt...> Sent: Wednesday, March 21, 2001 12:51 PM Subject: RE: [CSCMail-Users] Problem installing CSC Mail > Success! > > I've alltered the install script to call for HTML Parser 3.18 and MIME tools > 5.314 and it now works and runs. Success! I've alltered the install script to call for HTML Parser 3.18 and MIME tools 5.314 and it now works and runs. Can't vouch for whether they've made the program any less stable, of course. I think you'll need to go through the mirror quite extensively. In addition to the two components which must be changed, I spotted at least one more (stringy) where the version you are calling for is the oldest one left on the ftp server - I suppose it will disappear too sometime soon... Hi This is my first posting to the list, so please excuse any breaches of protocol. I've just set up my PC with linux (a RedHat derivative) and I'd happily re-format the Windows partition and never look back, if I could find a replacement for the role Microsoft Outlook plays in my life now. I read the rationale for CSCMail with interest, and am keen to try it, since it sounds like it might take me a step closer, but I'm having problems getting it to build. I've used the installer and it got stuck looking for the various Gnome libraries. So I spent all day rebuilding gnome from the helix website. Every component is now up to date. But still the CSC Mail installer seems to have problems finding a couple of directories that it expects to have created. This is what I get when I run the installer: [root@localhost nick]# perl CSMailInstaller.pl perl: warning: Setting locale failed. perl: warning: Please check that your locale settings: LANGUAGE = <unset>, LC_ALL = <unset>, LANG = "<null>" are supported and installed on your system. perl: warning: Failling back to the standard locale <"C">. Date: Fri Mar 16 01:53:04 EST 2001 (countzero) Added preliminary support for c-client We now link in the c-client lib and have all the callback stubs in place (in cclient.c) For now, the path to c-client.a and the c-client includes directory is hard coded This is evil... but c-client isn't packaged to be a "standard" lib and so I am learning how to detect it's presence and location on a system... I may end up bundling it with CSCMail ... not sure yet... for now, if you want to hack on things, just change the path in src/Makefile.am to point to your copy of c-client (It's fairly obvious) Again, this is preliminary support only.. right now CSCMail 1.9.x doesn't do ANYTHING usefull except compile and display an empty mailer window Once c-client integration is complete however, CSCMail will be able to handle local mailstores in a wide variety of formats (maildir, MBOX, etc) as well as have IMAP, POP-3, SMTP, and NNTP support ... |

Fixed MBOX exporting so CSCMail now actually exports folders to true = MBOX files. The old format wasn't 100% MBOX compatible (c-client based = programs wouldn't recognize them) In the works: IMAP Support -Count Zero |

Thanks, Deleted .cscmailrc and rerun, so a new .cscmailrc was created. Point to the right dir now and no pbs at that point. But now I have the following message and won't start of course: 'perl: error in loading shared libraries: /usr/lib/libgtkhtml.so.4: undefined symbol: new_pspell_config' So downloaded another gtkhtml..rpm (redhat), -> same message. I'm running mandrake 7.1. I have all packages installed (last) cscmail need. So I haven't to compile gnome-perl. Readed also the FAQ but there is no such pb. Anyone been working on a mugshot option for cscmail, ie a feature that displays an image of the sender of the current message? If not, I'll have a bash. Which version should I try and put it in? I've written a small script which may be of interest. It is used to play the mail sound file; it pops up a new mail window and optionally plays the sound within certain hours. You can probably figure it out yourself, but I'll supply it on request and it may be a desirable feature in the real product. Vik :v) |

Of course, any help anyone > might offer would be greatly appreciated! hehe (hint hint) Ah, stroll on 1.8.0 Since I joined the list I've learned a lot about Perl, sworn at it, and even written programs in it. I've patched cscmail-1.6.1 so that if it can't find a configured default mail account when making a new message, it picks the first one it finds. All great fun. I'd just like to add my encouragement for the completion of the Perl version, and thank everyone for doing their bit so far. Happy New Millenium! Vik :v) |

When you upgraded, you forgot to create the BCC column in your messages table... There are instructions for doing so in README.migration -Count Zero |

Pavlos Parissis was overheard mumbling something about this on Thu, 04 Jan 2001 12:39:43 +0200 > i did it but it stopped with errors, correct me if i am wrong but this CPAN will > install tarballs and > I do n't like this, i have already install gnome-perl in tarballs and i am not > going to install any other. > As a result i searched for rpms. The reason to use Tarballs/CPAN and not RPMS for perl modules is simple (and is exactly what is causing the following problem.) Perl is fairly finicky about the locations of it's files. If the files are not in the right places it cannot find them. RPM's for perl modules will invariably get it WRONG. Using CPAN will always get it right! For example, your site setup has @INC (the "includes" directory list) set to tell perl to look in the following directories for modules: /usr/lib/cscmail /usr/lib/perl5/5.00503/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/5.00503 /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.005/i386-linux /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.005 Thats it... If a module is not in one of these directories, or beneath it, perl cannot find it. However, your Mail::Header module is in: /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl Well, that directory isn't in @INC, so perl doesn't look there for any modules. To fix this, move the Mail directory from site_perl to site_perl/5.005 But of course, this invalidates the whole reason to use RPMS... Once you manually move this file, you can no longer uninstall this module via RPM -e ... Again, Perl is NOT RPM friendly... DO NOT USE RPMs to install Perl modules. Use the CPAN shell. It will automatically install modules in the CORRECT locations, it will automatically download modules, it will automatically compile the modules for your system nice and cleanly, it will automatically install module dependancies, it will automatically test module installation and make sure everything is installed correctly. CPAN performs the same functions as RPM, but in a very Perl friendly manner. I highly recommend that you UNINSTALL (rpm -e) all of the perl modules that you have installed via RPM, and re-install them via CPAN... Otherwise you are going to have nothing but problems with any perl application you try to install and use. Part of this is because there are not RPM's for every perl module, part of it is because some of the RPMs you have installed are mdk rpms (and therefore compliant with the Mandrake filesystem layout) and others are NOT mdk rpms (and therefore live in some other location and perl cannot find them) If you are insistant on using RPMs to install perl modules, you will always have a hard time getting perl applications to run correctly, since you will never end up with a consistant and correctly installed perl module tree. -CZ |
