when on my tablet documents appear to open but are just black -- including instruction manual
Android version 4.0.4 app version 3.0.48-2

nothing in help about this phenomenon- please advise

    Probably, screen backlight brightness in CoolReader is set to very low value.
    Try to remove .ini files from SD/.cr3/*.ini
