Hello, I used add-image.sh file to download the xenv0 image and made the package installations which I needed. However, when I downloaded xenv0, I'm not able to find any 1p or 4p-xenv0 BSDs. I can see 1p-xenv0-reset.bsd and 4p-xenv0-reset.bsd. If I try ./add-image.sh -l, it shows me the xenv0 related BSDs in the BSDs ready list. But if I use pass them through my lua script, it gives me an error related to BSDs. Is there any way I can find these BSDs. Thank you. |

You can take any image as basis (including those one available in COTSon): again, there is nothing different from a real PC. Have you tried to update an Ubuntu 9.10 installation on a real machine in these days? A better way to install your packages is to prepare a drive-image with anything you may need. Any image that can boot on a real x86_64 machine should boot also in SimNow. In the file: https://sourceforge.net/p/cotson/code/HEAD/tree/trunk/images.list there are some ready to use image that are quite updated (e.g., with Ubuntu 16.04). Have a look at the README* files in the trunk directory. Hope it helps. Roberto. Hello, I'm trying to run the example for simulating twonodes.in file in the examples of cotson, but there is no ping sent from any of the nodes to each other. I'm using *'make run_twonodes' *to simulate the cluster. I can see separate screens for the two nodes, but can't see any activity on the terminal, and after a while I kill the process. If I check the log file, I can observe a *'waiting....' *line, meaning that no nodes are pinging. Can you help me with the same? |

Hi Amir, If you just want to change the memory latency you can do it already: "mem=Memory{ name="main", latency=150, write_latency=50, slots=8 }" in your "lua file" - see the user guide and some of the examples in the examples directory e.g. https://sourceforge.net/p/cotson/code/HEAD/tree/trunk/src/examples/one_cpu_simple.in --- If you should need something more sophisticated in a specific simulation scenario that you want to develop: you may want to have a look at how e.g. a "cache" object is developed in https://sourceforge.net/p/cotson/code/HEAD/tree/trunk/src/abaeterno/mem_lib/ - Also some of the examples in the second part of the user guide might be useful to show different scenarios. - in the https://sourceforge.net/p/cotson/code/HEAD/tree/branches/ you may find even more complex and various simulation scenarios --- More in general: we do not have yet a "Developer's Guide": it would be nice if someone could take some time to develop it ! :-) I hope this notes could be somewhat useful. Hi everybody I want to analyze my simulation outputs. There are nearly 200 metrics for each cpu core, like cpu0.cycle,cpu0.idlecount,cpu0.hb_ATC_flush and etc. But I don't know about these metrics. So where can I find some difinition and information about these metrics? Thanks alot |

Hi Everybody I have some questions for COTSon features. Can I measure energy consumption or power consumption of full-system computer with COTSon simulator?another question is can I do it for whole cluster?I mean that if I simulate a cluster with 10 nodes, how can I measure total power of whole system(Processing nodes, network equipment)? Thanks for your help |

Assuming that you just want to update your image once, you may want to use something like qemu+kvm (which is faster than current SimNow) to modify your disk-image once: - Create your image for qemu. Install everything you need there. - Additionally, you may want to install the xget/xput utilities from data/cotson-guest-tools.iso Then: [I repost below some older info that I had internally, but there could be smarter ways to do the same] - Use Simnow's disktool to create a disk image of exactly the same size of the disk you set up for the virtual-os install (you name it disktool_image_to_trash.hdd) - Copy the first 512 bytes from disktool_image_to_trash.hdd to my_final_image.hdd using $ dd if=disktool_image_to_trash.hdd of=my_final_image.hdd bs=512 count=1 $ rm disktool_image_to_trash.hdd # we can delete it now - Convert your disk image using qemu-img to the raw format (it becomes my_favourite_os_disk.raw) - Append the contents of the my_favourite_os_disk.raw file into my_final_image.hdd $ dd if=my_favourite_os_disk.raw of=my_final_image.hdd bs=512 seek=1 - Now you can boot Simnow using my_final_image.hdd (hopefully). Hope it helps. Roberto. On Sat, Nov 7, 2015 at 9:23 AM, Farhad Azadjoo <far...@gm...> wrote: > Hi everybody, > I want to Simulate a full-system Computer with COTSon and SimNow. 1. No, COTSon does not model cycle-by-cycle execution. It is functional-driven; think of it as a functional simulator running alongside a timing model that gets fed instructions by the functional side. While you can implement a cycle-by-cycle model in the timing side, it will never be timing driven, so the usual limitations of what you can model apply. However, since you're interested in a NIC-level accelerator, why bother on cycle-by-cycle CPU simulation? 2. The uarch only appears in the timing model, so you can change that however you want - keeping in mind the limitations above. Simnow is purely functional, it has no concept of uarch at all 3. Yes, we could write your own messaging library. Depending on the level of details you want, you may be able to do it without adding a new NIC device. What you need to do on the simulation side is define a memory area for send/receive buffers, add a few special instructions that pass the "new packet" information to the simulator, and then establish your own host-side communication mechanism (probably TCP/IP or shared memory if you run on the same host). Hi Abraham, 1. COTSon can cover a full range of options between cycle-accurate and purely functional simulation (including, e.g., "dynamic sampling"). In short: yes. Look at the src/examples/atracer -- just type make to start the example: you will see the exact timing for 3 instructions of a small example (add.c). Have a look at the README. For more options: src/abaeterno/sampler 2. You may not be interested to change anything inside SimNow. However AMD provides an SDK (see SimNow documentation) to allow the user to model, e.g., his/her own NIC, if this is what you would like to do. Also have a look at abaeterno/timer_dev/simple_nic.cpp for a NIC timing model. 3. If someone would like to take over any branch activity is certainly welcome. We had some students who made some attempts in the past for Noxim but it is not yet completed, afaik. Any improvement is totally welcome ! Hope it helped. Roberto. Hey All, I have some questions about using COTSon for implementing an accelerator along side with the network interface card. 1. If I want to implement an accelerator which work along side with the NIC , is it possible to design its timing model. Is COTSon a cycle accurate simulator? If it is not, how is the accuracy of the timing model compared with a cycle accurate simulator? 2. Along with the above question. How flexible is to change some hardware features (micro-architectural) inside the SimNow simulator? 2. And also while I am able to get COTSon/Noxim simulator working, I found the TCP/IP simulated network cumbersome. Is it possible to design a light weight messaging technique for communication across nodes. I know there is something called "messaging" in one of the COTSon branch. I am not sure weather I can extend that. Thank you so much for the support!!! |
