I've been running colinux .64-2 with slirp networking, using the later of the 2 Gentoo images on the sourceforge download site (2005.1). After lots and lots of emerge installs an updates in console mode, including gdm, gnome-light and xorg-x11, I have tried to edit the xdcmp section of gdm.conf, as per the colinux X wiki. I've done this in the past, with no problems. But now I cannot locate any gdm.conf file to edit. Nano keeps wanting to open a new file (I'm logged in as root). Therefore gdm crashes and I can't run a graphic display with Xming. I also did full config file updates with etc-update. Has gdm.conf moved or is it somehow no longer being created by default? Thank you. Elliot J. Lerner |

Incrase or decrase your "mem=..." with some megabytes. Don't use the size with power of 2. This error is known for using "mem=256" on some machines. Mostly helps to change from 256 to "mem=250" as workarrount (or from 512 to 500, or to 520). 2.) Create a new empty file for swap. Configure it to use with cobd, for sample "cobd1=YourFile". Inside a other running coLinux do a "mkswap /dev/cobd1". Give this swap file in you Ubuntu installation as hda-alias, for sample "hda2=YourFile". Before you starts dpkg, enable the swap with "swapon /dev/hda2". -- Henry Nestler |

Thank you very much for the help. I installed it using the installer program provided and it booted up fine. Excellent job on the enhancements to the user interface, by the way. However, I tried the Ubuntu installation again, and at the point where it crashed before, it still crashes, although this time it gives me an error after it dies and before it dumps me to the DOS prompt again: colinux: Linux VM terminated colinux: BUG at /home/hn/CoLinux/build/henryn-devel/linux-2.6.12-source/mm/:493 I was attempting to do dpkg --configure -a to get the gnome-panel working. I had similar problems before, all dealing with packages that either dealt with power management or VESA, usually requiring me to wipe out some files in the /etc/rc*.d directories - not a very nice solution but it worked at the time until this. Thank you again for any assistance you can provide, as well as the assistance you just provided, this has been stumping me for quite a while. --- Henry Nestler <Hen...@Ar...> wrote: > Hello Hans, > > A Hans wrote: > > Greetings - > > > > I'm trying to get coLinux running on my laptop so > I > > can have Windows XP and Linux on the tiny HD > without > > having to repartition (not practical, won't bore > you > > with why). Greetings - I'm trying to get coLinux running on my laptop so I can have Windows XP and Linux on the tiny HD without having to repartition (not practical, won't bore you with why). Every time I try to start it up it BSOD's on me, sometimes auto-rebooting. It does this too quickly for me to see just what it's saying. The error itself, however, is always IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. 0.6.4 has not given me this trouble. I have turned off the no execute bit and PAE in boot.ini. I have NOT uninstalled 0.6.4. I've tried uninstalling the driver (using the old 0.6.4 colinux-daemon --remove-driver, then using the 0.7.1 colinux-daemon --install-driver), but to no avail. I've also tried disabling the APIC and such in the kernel parameter list, but it seems to have no effect. I know that the crash isn't INSTANT, because some text prints out (maybe about 5/6th of the DOS window fill up before the crash happens), but it's too fast for me to read, and I'm pretty much stumped. Does anyone have any ideas? I'm running WinXP on a Dell Latitude D620, Intel Duo Core, 1 GB of RAM (256 Megs allocated to CoLinux). I'm trying to get Ubuntu 6.06 on it but I'm having problems (hence why I tried 0.7.1, I hoped it might help the install crashes). Thank you for any help you can give me. This is driving me batty. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Tired of spam? Yahoo! Mail has the best spam protection around http://mail.yahoo.com |

As long as no special kernel feature is used a installed system will work on many kernels. After all it is just a group of already compiled programms. |

Perhaps something like the following should be added to the wiki under wiki.colinux.org/mediawiki/index.php/Network#TAP_with_NAT. Any thoughts? "The network card which is currently being used to connect to the internet should be set up to share the connection. Right click the interface card, select Properties, and go to the advanced properties tab. Tick the "Allow other...." box and select the TAP adapter in the "Home networking connection" list. This will set the TAP IP address to 192.168.0.1 (check this for 10.0.0.x networks). This should be set as the default gateway in the colinux networking setup if you are hard coding your IP address. Hello, I am trying to run coLinux on WinXp. I tryed the version 0.6.3 and 0.6.4 but both of them crash (the computer is resetted) as soon as i start them, either as a service or as a standalone application. I am using the debian image file, and i tryed to disable initrd and switched from "tap" to "bridged" without any luck, it always crash immediatlely. I think that the problem is that i have a dual core processor, a Pentium D930, but as far i could read on the documentation the multiprocessor/core issue should be already resolved. Any hint? And that about some other? Colinux provides only the linux kernel. You can use it with other distributions as well. You just won't get a preconfigured image. Colinux is at 2.6.11, only old versions are available with 2.4 kernel, i wouldn't use them. I don't fully understand what you mean by booting from floppy. If you want to start the installer from a distro that is a bit more complicated, as they usually bring their on kernel with them. Search for "from scratch" in the colinux wiki. |

On the wiki you can found some howto boot a distribution to make your own coLinux installation. It mostly are some hacks in the installer steps.
