Hi Could not subscribe to the list so I am sending this hoping someone will read it and reply back to me directly. I am having a lot of fun with colinux. Problem is his when I start my vnc viewer in windows I get the grey screen the long instructions mention. In the instructions it is said that creating a file called host in /etc with 127.0.0.1 colinux.colinuxdomain colinux in it that should correct. This is not working for me. If anyone can help please do thanks. Doug Stratton Operations Engineering Workstations Services Branch CITS, Solutions BC, Province of BC 4000 Seymour Place, Victoria B.C. u might want to use an X server like x-win32 or cygwin (just do 'export DISPLAY=windows_ip:0'. This way the response is much faster as compared to using a vncserver. Of course using a bridged connection might also work though havent tried it out as yet. At first: If you have closed only the terminal via Win-ALT, you can restart colinux-console-fltk.exe or colinux-console-nt.exe (without colinux-daemon.exe again). This connect your console again, you are already logged in. Try it! Normaly you sould not close the daemon before you shutting down your rootfs. My linux goes down with "halt" on console. Simply the same situation as in real linux boot. Snapshoot coLinux-20040710 and last 0.6.1. I see a lot of error on your device /dev/cobd4. It is real hda4 and filesystem ext3? Please uncomment /boot partion for first boot. Under coLinux partion / is mounted rw. Try disable fsck on boot. Read your runscripts near fsck, how you can disable fsck on boot. Mostly set kernel parameter "fastboot" in bootparams of XML file. I've just manged to get colinux to boot with my real ext3 partition as the rootfs :) On exiting the bash prompt and hitting the window-alt keys I then closed the colinux terminal. When I booted to linux proper (i.e. via grub) the partitions needed an fsck. How do I avoid this??? Do I have to type "powerdown" as root to unmount the filesystems first? Thanks for any help and/or advice. Brendan simon. |

I've finally been able to get colinux-0.6.1 to boot and use my real ext3 partition as the rootfs :) I've installed vncserver on the partition but am having trouble logging into it because some of the keys don't map correctly. Most of them do but some don't. eg. the number 6 and the enter key don't map correctly. Since the number 6 is part of my password and the fact that I can't press enter in a terminal makes it very hard to login and do things. I've used VNC on a number of systems in the past and never had these problems. Any idea what the problem could be? Is it a colinux issue or just a plain vnc issue? Any help or pointers would be greatly appreciated. BTW: from what I saw, VNC looked fairly slow. Much slower than I expected considering WinXP and colinux are running on the same machine (I'm running XP in bridged mode btw). Thanks, Brendan Simon. |

Hey all. I=92ve got my colinux with gentoo working nicely. Been up and running = for a week now. So I thought I=92d venture onto getting some nice graphical = apps going. But I=92m having some trouble. My main source of info was from http://www.colinux.org/wiki/index.php/XCoLinux my setup is using X-win32. My current attempt is done by ssh=92ing into it and setting putty to = enable X11 forwarding. I then open X-win32 and setup a XDMPC Query set to the gentoo box=92s IP. And of course I do the export DISPLAY=3Dwindowsbox with X-win32 =20 It must =BD work because if I type xterm, xcalc, bitmap, any of those = simple Xclient apps it will popup and be usable thanks to X-win32. Now what I=92m trying to do is what they have setup at my uni, they have = an older version of X-win32 and we can use that to connect to their = servers, and can use KDE and stuff like that. So I type X or startx or xinit. But they all come up with the same = thing: =20 (=3D=3D) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Mon Jul 19 00:46:03 = 2004 (EE) Unable to locate/open config file (EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile() =20 Fatal server error: no screens found =20 =20 so I must be missing out just one small very simple step that I can=92t = find anywhere. I made sure I did as much research and put down as much info as I could rather than a =93its not working, make it work=94 post you usually see = so hopefully will encourage someone to reply ;) =20 Thanks Dave |

How's the network performance? I really wanna run a nfs/samba/linux network on colinux boxes, I've tried every windows nfs solution I could find, and none of them can save uid/gid without mapping it to windows users, which imho is a horrible solution. coLinux would allow me to run the network linux-linux. Unfortunatly the only windows computer I have right now is one running in vmware, and while I can set it up there and move it to production computers later I can't do any network performance tests. Has anyone done any network performance tests with the different network options? Which is the best solution, and what kind of speed can I be hoping for? (the computer I eventualy will put it on will be 1gbit, while it'd be REALLY nice to bridge into that, I'd be damn happy with 100mbit aswell). I can probably be ok with something a lot slower aslong as I know future versions will improve the speed though (as I'm sure it will), but the 200kb/sec I get in vmware wont work ;) |

I've got the Debian Woody load to the point that I can start the colinux-daemon, login and then start vncserver which, during it's startup, starts kde. When I start a vnc viewer from the PC it goes directly to the kde desktop of whatever user I logged in as. What I would like to do is have vncserver (and, thus, kde) start up at boot time so I don't have to login at the text prompt. When I start vnc viewer I want to see a kde login box. How do I make that happen? -- Jerry |

There has be some talk about using colinux as a firewall to protect windows having linux drive the nic directly and haveing windows connect t= o the network through colinux and using linux native iptables as the firewall builder. If you just want to protect colinux just use iptables on linux. or you could use the ICS method of networking and then nobody outside can connect unless you have the port forwarded. chris > > Any one using a firewall to filter packets (if such a beast is > out there) only for coLinux under Win2k box connected to > a LAN? > > -ishwar > > > > > ------------------------------------------------------- > This SF.Net email is sponsored by BEA Weblogic Workshop > FREE Java Enterprise J2EE developer tools! > Get your free copy of BEA WebLogic Workshop 8.1 today. > http://ads.osdn.com/?ad_id=3D4721&alloc_id=3D10040&op=3Dclick > _______________________________________________ > coLinux-users mailing list > coL...@li... > https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/colinux-users > |

Hello all, I am trying to get networking working woth coLinux using the TAP virtual driver bridged to my cable connection (dhcp). The problem I am having is that once the two drivers are bridged I lose all connections. The new bridgged connection reports an invalid IP and assigns the connection a private ip. Any ideas of what I'm doing wrong? |

I'm thinking along the same line, but my idea is that I would use the coliux "box" as a virtual firewall, for increased network security. So it would be GREAT, if anyone knows how-to. Hi Is there any way to add sound support to coLinux? The only way I can think of is by running an esd in cygwin and then pointed coLinux to it. Is there a sound daemon which can run purely from windows? I removed my cygwin the day I got coLinux to work :) Thanks Samir |

Yes, for this and most other such problems, there's a very good resource called wiki, for which some folks are spending quite a lot time I guess to keep up, current and helpful. The home page is http://www.colinux.org/wiki/ I've even figured the page relevant to your issue, it did not take more than a click to reach, here it is: http://www.colinux.org/wiki/index.php/Partitions Hope this helps, -- A. using smbmount (part of samba) with file sharing on windows is the best way to do this right now hopefully colinux will get some form of hostfs in the end though -----Original Message----- From: col...@li... I did not realize that my vmfile are in that partition, therefore I am not able to access the whole partition as colinux locks it. Perhaps I have to use samba -- Is this the right way to access any windows partition?
