Well, i have been using linux for a long time. I used to reboot the computer to use a linux programm after a while reboot the computer again to use a windows programm and so on.... this is very annoying way of working. When i heard about coLinux i decided to install it no matter how difficult was the process. So i installed it and managed to edit the XML file to mount the linux partitions, then edit fstab in linux and installing the kernel modules. Anyway i started coLinux and it had a problem with fsck because it said that module major-block-3 is missing...... i have no idea what module is major-block-3 but anyway, init stopped there and asked for root password for manteneance. So i give it to her and i had a linux prompt, also i could manage to run programms like ls, cat, vim (in colors!! :) and others. Then i run fsck by hand... it said something about being dangerous to run fsck on mounted partitions, i payed no attention to it because i thougth that before writing any change fsck will ask for comfirmation anyway, inmmidiately after it, the kernel got crazy showing all kind of errors, i couldn´t do "cd" i couldn't do "ls", i couldn't do anything. I turned off coLinux and i couln't run it again because it failed to mount the ext3 partition on "/". I restarted the computer in linux and it couldn't init because of kernel panic mounting ext3. I guess i´m screwed, and my partition is broken. But i cannot believe fsck could do big changes in the partition in less than a second running, it probably changed only one bit from one to zero, but not messed the whole partition!!!, right? Anyway, i start asking here because i have no idea where to ask, do you have any ideas to fix this problem?? _________________________________________________________________ Add photos to your messages with MSN 8. I'm using colinux-0.6.1 with a REAL debian filesystem (i.e. on a separate partition). I am using Cygiwn Xfree to connect to XDMCP running in colinux. I'm running gdm and gnome. I have XP with bridged networking. I have set the colinux ram to 128MB (seem to have more trouble when set to 256MB for some reason). I often have applications that die. Particularly Mozilla, FireFox and Gnome Panel objects. I also notice that there is sometimes a panel icon that has completely screwed colours but every other icon and application is perfect. The browser and mail clients are slowish, but traversing hierarchical menus is EXTREMELY slow. xscreensaver kicks in after a period of inactivity but I can not type in a password as it gets a timeout every second :( I end up logging in as root on the console and doing "killall xscreensaver" to get around this. I think I am have some SSL problems with some applications. One java app will connect to a data service fine without SSL when I know I have used SSL in the past with the native linux boot. I am using Cygwin Xfree but I think I would prefer to use VNC. The reason being that when I suspend my computer and transport it between work and home I get different IP addresses (DHCP) for the colinux VM and the X session dies. Unfortunately VNC is giving me keyboard mapping problems and I can't type passwords in mozilla dialog boxes. The mapping seems OK in a terminal until I fire up mozilla which then stuffs up everything. Does anyone else have similar experiences, solutions or suggestions to solve the above problems??? Regards, Brendan Simon. |

Earlier I had similar effect, it had quite big impact on the performance, but only when doing some computations on the coLinux -- e.g. compilation. I have changed in the System preferences that Foreground application should receive performance boost instead of the background services. Now that I have installed coLinux as a service, it is consuming 100% of my processor and other tasks are completely starved. For example, I type make and nothing happens until I stop whatever is running in coLinux. How can I "nice" the colinux thread? |

It does not appear to have any end-user applications, it is a simple base system. However, it appears that this stable image, too, has .. crw-r--r-- 1 root root 2. 0 Jun 23 23:33 /dev/ptyp0 ..which means mortal users cant use xterm nor rxvt. Usually you start by updating the package system (in debian, apt-get update and then apt-get dist-upgrade) and then installing some packages that you are interested in (xterm, mozilla-firefox, gcc, ...). Notice that (at least the images I've tried) are unstable/testing, meaning some packages might be broken at times. Greetings,
I have just installed a new instance on my home computer. Up
until now I've been using coLinux on my computer at work, so the
network is a little different. At home I only have 1 IP address so I
want to use NAT not bridged networking. The problem is that if I ping
I can get the IP address, but no packets get sent. apt-get never
connects, either.

hi all, i'm experiencing random floating point errors (echo $? = 136). i'm using debian, kernel is 2.4.25-co-0.6.0. with random, i mean sometimes it works and sometimes it results to an error. i'm experiencing this on gnucap. i have a program that simulates lots of circuits continuously, then it halts because gnucap would produce 'NaN.' when i simulate the offending ckt again, i get a number instead of NaN (if i don't get the floating point exception) thanks |

how are you starting vnc? if you start by the command line vncserver you need a ~/.vnc/xstartup script to run a window manager the default one that is installed the firs= t time you run vncserver uses twm so if twm is not installed then you will get a grey screen. if you are using Xvnc with inetd (or xinetd) you need to configure your display manager to listen for xdmcp requests.( at least from 127.0.0.1) I can help further with this If you tell me what display manager you are using. (kdm gdm or xdm) chris > Hi > Could not subscribe to the list so I am sending this hoping someone wil= l > read it and reply back to me directly. > > I am having a lot of fun with colinux. > > Problem is his when I start my vnc viewer in windows I get the grey scr= een > the long instructions mention. > In the instructions it is said that creating a file called host in /etc > with > 127.0.0.1 colinux.colinuxdomain colinux in it that should correct. > > This is not working for me. are you starting vnc from inetd? or manually. do you mean log in at kdm login screen? then it goes to the desktop? I can think of 2 different ways that can accomplish what you want. If you want no login at all then you can set an autologin in the kdm config files. can't find the info right now but will send a helpfull link when I find i= t. It's kindof burried in the vnc docs I was reading about this a few weeks = ago. What version of vnc are you using? I think realvnc 4.0 also adds the option of logging in the first time and resuming the session. chris > I've got the Debian Woody load to the point that I can start the > colinux-daemon, login and then start vncserver which, during it's > startup, starts kde. yeah its because whoever made the debian images didn't put the following line in /etc/network/interfaces iface lo inet loopback you will not be able to use 127.0.0.1/localhost to access stuff locally without this in place note: i didn't add this when i prepped the images for 2.6 as i wanted to keep existing documention as accurate as possible -----Original Message----- From: col...@li...
