Perhaps I got lucky, it didn't seem so complicated. I just followed the instructions under http://www.colinux.org/wiki/index.php/coLinuxNetworking ("Using native network bridge support in Windows XP"). I ran the CoLinux setup executable. That gave me a Local Area Connection 2 under Network Connections. I then selected the two Local Area Connections, right-clicked, and chose Bridge. In the default.colinux.xml file I have: <network index="0" type="tap" /> All this worked before, but not anymore; creating that bridge just disconnects me from everything. hank smith wrote: > what the heck did you do to get yours set up? there are a few issues here 1: installing the colinux driver (not hard but is a system level operation requiring admin privilages) 2: conflicts with existing colinux installs on the system (see point 1) we need the ability to customise the driver name how hard is this to add? 3: networking (im working on this one right now and im nearly there) 4: a cd is read only so you would have to use a livecd style of design its not impossible to make a workable colinux live cd (codename conoppix) but it will require quite some work > -----Original Message----- > From: col...@li... > [mailto:col...@li...]On Behalf Of Sandy > Harris > Sent: 09 September 2004 03:37 > To: col...@li... > Subject: [coLinux-users] Colinux CD? > > > As I understand it, Colinux can either > use a Linux partition or a big Windows > file that acts as the Linux file system. > > So could you build a Colinux CD that > used Windows autoboot? As I understand it, Colinux can either use a Linux partition or a big Windows file that acts as the Linux file system. So could you build a Colinux CD that used Windows autoboot? Put it in a Windows box and it brings up Linux. Has anyone tried this? |

I have a decent Linux box for serious computing, and another for a firewall, but I keep a spare machine around with Win 98 on it, mainly for games. Has anyone tried Colinux on 98? In a quick look at docs, I could not find anything that gave the system requirements on the Windows side. If I mised it, I'd appreciate a pointer. |

Hi, I was able to get XP's native bridged networking going just fine before (I'm on a home LAN with one of those Linksys cable/DSL DHCP routers). However, I temporarily removed my Local Area Connection from the bridge (to appease my ISP's tech support guy who thought the bridged network was why my Internet connection was slow). But now when I try to add my Local Area Connection back to the bridge, I get disconnected; I can't reach my LAN or get on the net. I tried recreating the bridge from scratch, but no difference. I saw the following details under the Support tab (which I think is identical to ipconfig's stdout): For the bridge: IP: 169.254.169.245 Subnet: 255.255.0.0 Gateway: [blank] For my ethernet (Local Area Connection): [all blank] For CoLinux TAP (Local Area Connection 2): [all blank] I tried hitting Repair for all three, to no avail (I think this just does the same as ipconfig /release followed by ipconfig /renew). For the bridge, there's a long pause before I see the error message. Anybody know what's going on? If it makes any difference, I have SP2, which has that application/port-based firewall, but I highly doubt it's the cause behind all this. Thanks in advance for any help. |

Hi,
I'm trying to use the alias feature in the colinux-20040710 snapshot
so I can dual-boot my Gentoo natively or from Windows/coLinux
without messing up my /etc/fstab.
I have a few entries in my colinux config file as follows:
<!-- Gentoo root -->
<block_device index="0" path="\Device\HarddiskVolume9"
alias="hdc10" enabled="true" />
<!-- Swap -->
<block_device index="1" path="\Device\HarddiskVolume6"
alias="hdc7" enabled="true" />
<!-- Gentoo boot -->
<block_device index="2" path="\Device\HarddiskVolume8"
alias="hdc9" enabled="true" />
<!-- bootparams allows you to pass kernel boot parameters -->
<bootparams>root=/dev/hdc10</bootparams>
Gentoo seems to boot okay until it tries to check/remount the root
device, when it fails to open /dev/hdc10. If I drop to a shell and
look in the /dev directory, I see no /dev/hdc10, /dev/hdc7 or
/dev/hdc9, but I do see /dev/hdc/10, /dev/hdc/7 and /dev/hdc/9.
(I actually have a couple more aliased partitions, but I've omitted
the details for clarity.)
Similarly, instead of /dev/cobd0, etc., I have /dev/cobd/0, etc.
During boot, the cobd driver claims to create the aliases okay:
cobd: loaded (max 32 devices)
alias for cobd0 is hdc10
cobd alias cobd0 -> hdc10 created
alias for cobd1 is hdc7
cobd alias cobd1 -> hdc7 created
alias for cobd2 is hdc9
cobd alias cobd2 -> hdc9 created
Any idea what's going on here? Something to do with devfs and
devfsd, perhaps? (I have a devfs filesystem mounted on /dev and
devfsd running, using /dev.) I don't have similar trouble booting
natively with a 2.6 kernel.
Ian.

I've been using the colinux 2004-07-10 snapshot with some success for a little while now (host system WinXP Pro), but recently I decided to compile a new kernel as the one included with the snapshot lacks a few features I wanted. I downloaded the source to the 2.6.7 kernel and applied the patch included in the colinux source to it, made a few changes to the config and then compiled it. The resulting kernel runs, but occasionally processes die unexpectedly with a signal 11. I've also seen corruption on my root ext3 filesystem -- I'm not sure if this was related or not. Has anyone encountered similar problems, or is it just me? For reference, my distribution is SuSE 9.1 personal with a load of extra development tools downloaded from the standard SuSE 9.1 drectory. |

The reason I suspect antivirus software, is that I once tried to install=20 sshd under cygwin. It was always working fine except once. the connection was always=20 reseted. Sometimes, the client was asking the password, but then it was=20 reseted. It took me a very long time (months) when I uninstalled mac=20 afee, and then everything was ok. Hi, The new network interface search order to be implemented seems to be: (1) exact match (2) first substring match And this looks pretty good. I guess most of the users will use the = exact match. After some googling I found this last year forums about the pentium 4 CFLAGS problems with floating point: http://www.gentoo.org/news/en/gwn/20030401-newsletter.xml#doc_chap4 It seems one way of testing if you have a gentoo configuration that activates this gcc bugs is executing: # python -c 'int(10.1); int(10000.3); int(1.2)' If it doesn't show nothing (no error) it is because your configuration is ok (or you have a mixed compiled environment, off course). After looking at this earlier discussion, it is clear to me that it is unrelated to the problem I am reporting. The key differences are: 1. The earlier discussion is from 2003-04 and earlier (more than 16 months ago) and refers to GCC version 3.2. In many places, it states that the bugs are going to be fixed in GCC 3.3, and I am now using GCC 3.3.4. 2. The earlier discussion does not observe any connection with linking with libpthreads. The problem I am reporting only happens to programs that are linked with libpthreads. 3. The earlier discussion does not refer to any difference between Linux kernel versions. It also (obviously) does not mention coLinux. The problem I am reporting only happens with pre-0.6.2 coLinux snapshots using Linux kernel 2.6.7 and does not happen with coLinux 0.6.1 using Linux kernel 2.4.26. Thanks for pointing out the earlier discussion though. -- Joe --__--__-- Message: 5 Date: 6 Sep 2004 02:35:07 -0000 From: "gboutwel" To: da...@co... CC: col...@li... In principle a WiFi networking card is no different than any other
networking card when it comes to bridging. However, many WiFi routers
do not accept packets bridged to another IP address. I believe this
is done as a security consideration. It also prevents problems from
users whom naively bridge their WiFi and LAN line, because they think
it will allow them increased bandwidth when plugged into the LAN.

I have a Dell D800 with WiFi and GigEth networking. I have colinux-20040710 running with XP in bridged mode. Is there a way to get my WiFi interface to work with colinux, using XP bridging or some other method ??? Does the WiFi interface look like any other Ethernet interface or is it a different beast. If it looks like an ordinary Ethernet then it should work with XP bridging without any problems, but I can't get it to work. Thanks for any help, Brendan Simon. |
