Hi, I got a similar problem. Look at the "NFS performance and colinux" thread in this mailing list. I suspect a packet fragmentation/reassembly problem with the bridging network configuration. Try your ping test with large packet size to create fragmentation. The results should be worse. I am using colinux on Windows 2000 SP4 with ethernet bridging. I use Winpcap 3.1beta. My problem concerned the NFS performance over colinux. I realized the system suffered from packet loss. Enabling "NFS over TCP" in the kernel fixed my problem. But, my colinux system still suffers from packet loss when I try the ping test. Regards, Claude. -----Original Message----- From: col...@li... Subject: [coLinux-users] colinux 0.6.1 network patcket loss Hi I installed a redhat 7.3 image with colinux 0.6.1 with XP sp1, with tap network (winpcap 3.1 beta) I use XP native ethernet bridging. First question: does the tap network driver uses winpcap? which version of winpcap is the best? (3.0 or 3.1beta?) There are some strange network problems: when I ping from colinux to another machine, I have 0% packet loss. When I ping the other machine to colinux, I have about 20 to 30% packet loss. when I do bidirectionnal iperf I obtain about 20mbit from colinux and 30mbit to colinux (100mbit fast ethernet switch with broadcom bcm5700 gigabit controller) With bidir iperf under windows, I have 20mbit upload and 90 mbit download. (90mbit both ways when half duplex) Does any have have the problem of packet loss? Is it a known problem? there is a post on the list indicating problems with nfs because of packet loss also? Is there a solution? I suspect macAfee antivirus... (I cannot remove it because of the IT guy here...) is it possible to access a serial port from within colinux or a usb device. i guess usb is really hard as windows normally detects it and installs a driver :-). |

> Can nebody suggest me complete guide for understanding and running UML(user mode > linux). Anand, If you're only interested in UML (Linx only), then go to http://user-mode-linux.sourceforge.net and http://www.usermodelinux.org If you're intersted in running an UML kernel in coLinux, then I suggest: 1) Get and install 20040710 snapshot (http://www.colinux.org/snapshots) 2) Get http://firechief.dyndns.org/colinux/binaries/coLinux-0.6.2-sns-gpb0816.tar.bz2 * Make a back-up of your 20040710 install directory * UnArchive the above file over your 20040710 install directory. ** This is an unofficial build of coLinux kernel and binaries from source repository on 0816 + UML's SKAS host kernel patch + UML's SYSEMU host kernel patch 3) Get an vanilla linux kernel 4) Get and Apply the appropriate uml-patch for the vanilla linux kernel you got. 5) (optional) Get and Apply the UML SYSEMU guest patches. 6) Compile and build UML guest kernel as normal (for UML). 7) Get an UML root filesystem. 8) run UML guest kernel with root filesystem. The above is basically what I did. I had an Debian 3.0r0 root fs up and running in with the above steps. I used 2.6.8.1 for my UML guest kernel. I haven't had time to try it with 2.4.x, but I image it should work as well. HTH, George ------------------------------------ Want to talk to other Christians? For the record, the desktop choices of VNC are controlled by a file called xstartup in a hidden directory ./vnc in the user's home directory. twm is the default in most cases. Hiya! I first had the same problem. The cause is the upgrade from kernel 2.4 = to kernel 2.6 and differences in device handling, that affect Gentoo = linux. Change your colinux config file so that it uses devices '/dev/cobd/0' = and so on; read also other docs. that you can find about upgrading = gentoo from 2.4 to 2.6 kernels. You have up install a new package = instead of modutils for instance, but I can't remember the details. Hi, I have the same problem! Apart from updating to the latest snapshot, = which you could try but be careful, read the mailing list archives, what = you can do is: - open a new terminal window - run 'top' - note the pid of the process taking all CPU - kill that process. Dont put them all on the 192.168.0/24 subnet. That makes the routing from one colinux to the other (virtually) impossible. Then I ran the command 'switchdesk GNOME' and now I have a beautiful Gnome desktop. :-) Cheers, Andrew. -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Myers [mailto:AM...@ci...] Sent: Tuesday, 31 August 2004 10:59 AM To: col...@li... Subject: [coLinux-users] FC1 & Gnome Hi, I've installed Fedora following the Fedora How To from the wiki http://www.colinux.org/wiki/index.php/FedoraHowTo and have got it succesfully running using VNC. I'd now like to see if I can get Gnome running. I've installed gnome-desktop with yum but I still see the other (twm) desktop. Can anyone help? :D Thanks, Andrew. --------------------------------------------------------------------- This email is from Civica Pty Limited and it, together with any attachments, is confidential to the intended recipient(s) and the contents may be legally privileged or contain proprietary and private information. Hello. I have problem with updating/installing Perl package (dev-lang/perl). At first, it goes well. But when it comes to test(test what?), it just stops, exactly at the same line each time : "lib/Benchmark......." and seems to do nothing. (CPU usage is 100% though) So whenever a new Perl package comes up to portage tree, I have to build this one at other server (with 'emerge -B'), move it to my coLinux box, and install it. (driving me mad!!! :'( ...) Can anybody help me? Does anyone have a solution for this problem? -- ALL YOUR BASE ARE BELONG TO US :D |

I have installed colinux (with Fedora core 1) on two of my desktops at home (essentially I got one working, and copied hard-disk image overm and changed the IP settings). I am able to reach both the virtual machines from either hostmachine (ping), however, I am unable to ping between the virtual machines. For example, say the host machines have IP addresses 192.168.0.199, 192.168.0.198 and the virtual machines have 192.168.0.150, 192.168.0.151. I am able to ping from 199 & 198 to 150 and 151. But I am not able to ping between 150 & 151 itself. Any ideas on what might be the issue here? So, i use: colinux-0.6.2-20040817, Fedora Core 2, Windows XP+SP1. I create images with mkFile tool: fc2_root (2 gb), fc2_home (2 gb), fc2_swap (512 mb). I copy /isolinux/initrd.img to coLinux directory from fc2 distrib. Now, i write config: <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?> <colinux> <block_device index="0" alias="hda1" path="\DosDevices\e:\coLinux\fc2_root" enabled="true" /> <block_device index="1" alias="hda2" path="\DosDevices\e:\coLinux\fc2_home" enabled="true" /> <block_device index="2" alias="hda3" path="\DosDevices\e:\coLinux\fc2_swap" enabled="true" /> <block_device index="29" path="\Device\CdRom0" enabled="true" /> <image path="vmlinux" /> <initrd path="fc2_initrd.img" /> <bootparams>root=/dev/ram</bootparams> <network index="0" type="tap" /> </colinux> and when i start: colinux-daemon.exe -c fc2.colinux.xml i see install page by fc2... so, when i see dialog? where i must specify location of installation packets (local cdrom, hard disk, ftp, http), I do not know that to do... when i select cdrom and specify cdrom driver (/dev/cobd29), cdrom is not founded... who can help me??? |

If yes, should we compile all for i586 only? I don't know if it is currently making any difference that the *kernel* is compiled for 586. I think compiling the kernel for 586 is probably conservative enough. It could conceivably make a difference that the coLinux libraries are compiled for 686. What I was proposing above is to recompile some *applications* with use of the MMX features turned off. What is needed is for there to be a person who is having the floating point problems with their machine who is also good at rebuilding/debugging coLinux and the Linux kernel. :-( > I'm using Pentuim4 and do not get any errors. Are you using the Pentium M? (The "M" is for mobile.) -- Joe |

Hello colinux users,
It seems that colinux will not start as a service when configured to mount
an initial ram disk.
Here is my config file:
<colinux>
<initrd path="root.fs.gz" />
<bootparams>root=/dev/ram0 root=/dev/ram0 init=/sbin/init
ramdisk_size=100000 max_loop=64</bootparams>
<image path="vmlinux" />
<memory size="128" />
<network index="0" type="tap" />
</colinux>
This config is working ok when started in a command shell.

Currently, only Linux on Windows is supported.
But for example, Linux on BSD or the reverse is easy.
>Is it an NT subsystem?
Totally not. It uses a brand new approach which Dan Aloni invented.
>Can it be used as a ReactOS subsystem?
>
It depends on the definition of "subsystem". ROS team is going to run
coLinux on ROS. But the approach is "coLinux style". You call this as
a subsystem? it depends on you.
