Hi I am looking to create an image backup of my system to a DVD. However, suppose that the ISO won't fit on the DVD. (1) What software do I use to break up the ISO? (ex: tar) Or can Clonezilla do this for me via some wizard? (2) Can Clonezilla restore from spanned media? Or do I need to first rejoin the spanned pieces? -- --Thanks! Uriel |

Hello Uriel, 1) You can mount /home/partimag either using ssh, nfs, a local usb or second HD. 2) Clonezilla image size depends upon the size of data you have in the HD. It uses compression algorithms so the size of the image will be less than the actual data size. If you have 20GB data, you take a backup in a 20GB space. I'd like to make an image backup of my OS. I took a look at the "Save disk image" in step by step examles but I have a few questions: (1) Where you mount /home/partimag (where the image gets saved), how big does that need to be? (2) When CloneZilla makes an image, is the image the same size as the entire partition or just the space that's taken up? Ex: I have Windows installed in a 80 GB partition but it uses up only 20 GB... How big will the image be? 20 GB or 80 GB? -- --Thanks! Uriel |

If i want to create custom clonezilla image, how can i add these drivers in to the new image. In the faq, you didn't mention about adding custom packages to the custom Clonezilla live. When i tried create-debian-live --help, it shows the option --packages to add new packages. Can you please explain this briefly ?. Can i specify create-debian-live -l e -b stable -k 2.6.30-backports.1-486 -i customized -a bnx2-driver where bnx2-driver is the custom build driver for the BCM5708 Regards Shameem --- On Fri, 12/18/09, Shameem Ahamed <sha...@ya...> wrote: > From: Shameem Ahamed <sha...@ya...> > Subject: [Clonezilla-live] (no subject) > To: clo...@li... > Date: Friday, December 18, 2009, 8:23 PM > Hi Steven, > > I am trying to create an image of my new machine. Hi Steven,
I am trying to create an image of my new machine. It has the
Broadcom NetXtreme II BCM5708 GB Ethernet Card
when i am booting to Clonezilla live image, it is stuck on
"Warning: waiting for ethernet cards up.... If this fails, maybe the ethernet card in not supported by the kernel 2.6.30-backports.1-486"
I have checked one of your earlier reply to such a problem and it seems like i need to put the module for the NIC card in to Clonezilla live.
Will this work for me ? Will this give a permanent solution?. If you have anymore suggestions please let me know.
Regards,
Shameem

Steven, Thanks for the link, I think that might work. However, once I create the image (e.g. sda2.img - for which I will use an external HD so that storage space is not a problem) - after this image is created, how do I open the <.img> file ? I am familiar with the .ISO image format since that is commonly used, but not .img type. Can it be saved as an .ISO image with the same command ? i.e. will the below cmd work ? > > cat dir/hda2.ntfs-ptcl-img.gz.* |gzip -d -c | partclone.restore -C -s - -o hda2.iso > ^^^ > (/ NOTE: the .iso file extension for the image, other syntax is as in the link /) In the meantime, I tried to increase the /dev/sdb1 ( /home) partition from the current 22 GB to 35 GB (the original size), but that is not possible without affecting the / (root) partition as both are categorized as primary partitions. Shameem: You should be able to use a different live CD to do the re-sizing of the partitions. I suggest using the gparted live CD: http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php It boots to a graphical user interface, and is a very user-friendly way to do this. Please show us the config > files, e.g. syslinux.cfg... So it's easier for me to reproduce the problem > then we can fix this problem. Well, I'm using some custom scripts, but now I reduced the configuration to try to use a script that does not exists to see if the problem still happened so it could be easier to reproduce. The pxe file for the machine would be like this: default Clonezilla label Clonezilla kernel /clonezilla/vmlinuz append initrd=/clonezilla/initrd.img boot=live live-getty console=ttyS0,115200n8 union=aufs noswap noprompt nosplash live-netdev="eth1" fetch=tftp://<SERVER_IP>/clonezilla/filesystem.squashfs ocs_live_keymap="NONE" ocs_live_batch="yes" ocs_lang="en_US.UTF-8" ocs_live_run="/blablablabla" and what happens when booting is the following. VGA starts displaying the pxe boot, "Decompressing Linux..." decompressing the initrd, and the last lines are "Ready Probing EDD (...) ok" It stops there, and then, text starts coming out through ttyS0 instead. squashfs is decompressed, init starts, I can see that it tries to set up eth0 through dhcp because I see some "DHCPDISCOVER..." lines until it times out. Then I think it sets up eth1 very fast and then the problem starts. I think it is when the ocs scripts begin executing. The VGA changes from the typical console text to another font, probably a framebuffer, and some scripts begin executing both in tty1 and ttyS0 obviously they fail inmediately because there is no blablablabla script, but I get the prompt to select what to do next in both terminals and they are different processes. If I type "tty" one gives /dev/tty1 and the other /dev/ttyS0. I would expect that everything happens in ttyS0 if I specified console=ttyS0 on the command line, or to have an option to do that. Is it possible? I would expect in that case to keep tty1 blocked or in a login prompt. >> I hope I had explained the problem clearly. Is there a way to avoid >> this? Hello Steven,
I have found a work around for it. Now i am stuck up with the partition part only. I am able to clone the image successfully, fully automatically.
Now the problem is, I am trying to clone the image of a 250 GB HD to a 1 TB HD So after the cloning the remaining 750 GB is unallocated. I want to resize the HD after the cloning, and before rebooting.
Is it possible ?. Is there anything called post cloning script ?.
Regards,
Shameem

Steven, Thanks for the reply. As an alternative, would it be possible to extract all files from the zipped image files (files in the image folder are as in the pict uploaded here: http://www.imagebam.com/image/fa2dd659800375) and then copy them over to the /home partition. I don't need to copy the MBR or "hidden data between MBR and first partition" since this is a /home partition and the MBR is installed on the / (root) partition, hence just need the data files. Is there a way to extract all content from the image files, i.e. to extract all data from the compressed files < 'sdb1.ext4-ptcl-img.gz.aa' to 'sdb1.ext4-ptcl-img.gz.ad' > (as in the picture in the link above) and then copy it to /home partition (/dev/sdb1 in this case), using a Linux live CD (such as Parted Magic or similar live CD) ? If this is possible, then there would be no need to resize/expand the /home partition. Hello Steven, That was a bunch of new info. I am really thankful for those links. I got information regarding running custom scripts and all. I am planning to use it. I have my disk images in the same PXE server. But it is not a NFS mount. So i am planning to use the sshfs for this purpose. How can i add a permanent key to the clonezilla live image. So that i can mount the sshfs filesystem. Hi Jay, Sorry... no... the target partition must be larger than the source one. This is still the limitation of Clonezilla (actually it's the limitation of partclone, ntfsclone or partimage). Steven. Hi, I made an image of /home partition of Ubuntu installation about 3 months back using Clonezilla-Live CD (Jaunty-12082009), the original partition size of /home was 35 GB (about 10 GB used, 25 GB free). After that I shrunk the /home partition from 35 GB to 22 GB. Now, when I try to restore the /home partition using the same version of Clonezilla-Live CD, with default options, it gives an error message that the destination partition is smaller than the source (the image should fit into the re-sized 22 GB partition, since the data size is only 10 GB and only used blocs are imaged). Is there a way to override this error message? I tried to look in the advanced option of Clonezilla, but there is no option for this. Thanks, Jay |

You can try the boot parameters ocs_prerun*, as shown in: http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/doc/fine-print.php?path=./99_Misc/00_live-initramfs-manual.doc#00_live-initramfs-manual.doc Of course, you have to make it unattended. There are some examples /opt/drbl/samples/create-*pt-sf in the Clonezilla live which you might be interested. Steven. Shameem Ahamed wrote: > Hello Steven, > > Thanks for the reply. Yes. You can create such a customized partition on the target disk before you cloning/restoring, and when you clone or restore it, remember to use the option "-k" (do not create partition table) in the expert mode. Hi All,
I just want to check whether it is possible to create custom partition before disk cloning with clonezilla.
I have a disk image of the entire centos server (Which has 4 partitions ) and want to clone the server image on a different server , for which i need a different partition layout.
Is it possible with clonezilla ?.
Regards,
Shameem
