CZ in PartedMagic created savedisk, but won't restoredisk it

This looks like the common problem -- and since it's so common, a structural fix seems indeicated -- but in my case I'd be happy with being able to restore this client's disk image for which Dell took back the original SSD.

I cloned their original Intel 256GB SSD onto an ext4 partition on my Linux (U18) laptop, having booted from a 2017 Parted Magic disk, mounting the 370ishGB /dev/sda3 on the laptop as /home/partimag, and picking a root-level directory called /backups (created while booted to Ubuntu as /appl/backups, /appl being its usual mount point).

Sure enough, I ended up with /backups/2019-hh-mm-ss-nn-img, full of files. Ok. Half done.

Got the laptop back, the Dell minion having swapped in a not-even-partitioned 256GB SanDisk. Pulled that out, put it on the same ASMT2100 USB3 cloning adapter, PartedMagic can see it, and what it is, and that it's unpartitioned. Fired up CZ, mounted /sda3, selected /backups as /home/partimag, and ...

    savedisk and saveparts.

    No restoredisk or restoreparts.

    Looked in the mounted /home/partimage/2019-yada-yada.

Looks like a valid image to me; lots of 40960000000 byte image slices for the big drive; all the other stuff I've come to expect.

But Clonezilla -- even the newer one on the newer 2018 PartedMagic I tried next -- steadfastly refuses to admit that the /backups/ directory has any images in it.

This is a running problem with CZ for quite some time, it seems, and it crops up at the worst imaginable time -- when you think your image went fine, and now you need it... and it's completely an opaque black box.

I don't mean to look a gift horse in the mouth, but this seems a brown-paper-bag bug for a drive imaging utility, and it'd be great if a dev could address this aspect of the problem -- the inability to validate an archive directory, much less be told exactly why it's being skipped in CZ's directory scan, leaving you with your $GENITALIA in your hand.

Having the 240GB of data staring up at me, taunting me, in a file format I can't unpack with its own tool or any other is about 4 orders of magnitude more frustrating than just having lost it at all.

Can any make any suggestions that aren't the ones I'd already tried from 47 other forum posts everywhere, and don't assume I have the original drive to reimage?

So have you tried Clonezilla live 2.6.2-15 or 20190707-disco:
    https://clonezilla.org/downloads.php
    Same issue?

Live 2.6.2-20amd64, actually, just downloaded this morning.

Same problem: I navigate the mount until I can see the enclosing -img folder, and then say OK, and the menu only includes savedisk and saveparts.

I tried using a 2015 version, but it wouldn't start up for some reason, on my T410.

Did you mean you saved the image with Clonezilla live 2.6.2-15, but it failed to restore using the same version of Clonezilla live? Or?

I saved it with the version baked into PartedMagic 2017; if you need the exact version, I'll need to boot it up, but it doesn't seem germane, unless you know something I don't.

My original restore attempt, of course, was with the same version, as noted in the OP.

If you're asking if I remade the image, the answer is also in the OP: No, I don't have the drive anymore; Dell took it back.

It's recommended to show the files there, after you mount your image repository as /home/partimag/, please run:
    find /home/partimag -print
    Then post the results.

I'll get this up today or tomorrow. The problem was taken off my plate; we rebuilt the machine, being unable to timely unpack the image, but I still think this is a problem that needs to be solved.

Thanks for your help, Steven; more to follow.
