top-level configure script in the CVS head has these lines:

    case "$passnext" in
      (configure) subdir_configure_args="$subdir_configure_args $arg" ;;
      (makemake) makemake_args="$makemake_args$arg" ;;
      (both) makemake_args="$makemake_args$arg"
        subdir_configure_args="$subdir_configure_args $arg" ;;
      (*) eval "$prev=\$arg" ;;
    esac

which should be fixed e.g. as

    case "$passnext" in
      configure) subdir_configure_args="$subdir_configure_args $arg" ;;
      makemake) makemake_args="$makemake_args$arg" ;;
      both) makemake_args="$makemake_args$arg"
        subdir_configure_args="$subdir_configure_args $arg" ;;
      *) eval "$prev=\$arg" ;;
    esac

POSIX explicitly permits this syntax:

please file a bug report with SUN and post the URL here.
then I will change clisp to support solaris.

$ ./configure 
./configure: syntax error at line 173: `(' unexpected

$ ls -l /bin/sh

what is your platform?
this syntax is POSIX-compliant, so I don't see why it wouldn't work.
