hello there, I have been on this list for a while, although this is my
first post. I work with the chicago-hacktivist group which holds
meetings and workshops at a new hacklab space in pilsen. the space is
called dai5ychain and it is an amazing venue for hosting tech
conferences and workshops. there is a large cvomputer lab running an
amazing venue. there is a large computer lab with a dozen machines
running linux. there is also a projector screening greenhouse ideal
for presentations. there is also a bike lab, a haunted house, and
other cool projects run out of the space. but dai5ychain is built for
local tech meetings. one project we want to engage in is regular
linux/coding classes.

I have been keeping up with the news about a chicago area PHP
conference as I have been coding in PHP for five years and am
particularily skilled with web security. I was excited for a while
until I heard that some other group is trying to hold a conference
here in the suburbs and charge $750 to get in. I don't know if any of
you are comfortable with that but especially coming from someone who
would take time preparing materials to present, I am definitely not
down in throwing that money away to some group who doesn't even seem
to have collaborated very well with the local PHP users group. It is
very irrational to hold a large conference at some commercial hotel in
the suburbs when there are perfectly capable spaces run by local techs
here in the city that we should be supporting instead.

If you guys are still interested in having a truly grassroots
conference, maybe you would consider using some of the other spaces in
the city. We held a three day hacking conference a few weeks ago at
dai5ychain and it went great. We are interested in holding weekly
linux/coding classes at the lab here. Or holding a single PGPug
meeting. The space is open and I encourage you guys to check it out.
I'll try to catch your next event as well.

Dai5ychain is open M-F from 11-6pm and is located in Pilsen Chicago on
Leavitt and 21st PLace.

I think you're hitting all the right places.

It can take time, but there are jobs out there.

I think many of them end up getting posted here, sooner or later :-)

Watch this mailing list .... people often post jobs.  Come to use
group meetings -- even go to groups like Adobe, they need programmers.
I went to Adobe a few times, picked up a php side job gig that got me
a good reference.

Craigslist, ... sites.
They come back with few results for Chicago, if any.

Can someone suggest me any other sites, or better ways

I'm writing to let you know about PHPGroups.org, which I'll
"officially" launch in a blog post soon but wanted to get several
groups involved early in the process. You can take a look and see what
we're up to at http://wiki.phpgroups.org/. Feel free to add Chicago
PHP on the Groups page, and add any other information you think is
helpful to user groups to the "User Group Guide" section.

I want this to be a fairly "open" experience. That is, I want every
user group to have a voice and be active participants in this user
group network.

They're cleverly hidden by some Designer in the top-left corner under
the logo... :-)

Actually, there's a MAY 15 date "Tutorials" on the calendar, which
might be worth checking out if somebody is just getting started.  I
believe those cost even more $$$ though...

I'm working on that, of course, but I'm thinking the word "Volunteer"
and a fair amount of time/energy would be involved...

Do compare the TCO with:
OSCON in San Jose (or wherever it is this year)
Zend Conference in San Jose (ditto)
PHP Conference in Frankfurt

Obviously, $750 is a lot of money in anybody's book (cept maybe Bill
Gates) but without the travel/hotel expenses of any other big-time PHP
conference, and 7 months to plan/save for it, it's worth at least
thinking about it.

Yeah, can't say I'm ecstatic either.  Not sure if I can swing that fee or if
the presentation I was considering giving would qualify as a paper for an
event this size.  I also had a friend who wanted to come into town for it,
but definitely can't afford that entry fee.  *sigh*

So, er, what qualifies as a reasonable presentation for a show like this?

Also, what are you looking for in sponsors?  Is it something that would be
appropriate to bring up to my boss (PHP consulting company of under 10
people but with high-profile clients)?  What does being a sponsor mean?

And would someone please fix the list?  It keeps rejecting my main email
account, so I can receive but not send.  I have to double-subscribe and do
all my sending from GMail. :-(

We are an Evanston-based web consulting firm developing web sites and web
applications for a variety of clients, including several large academic
institutions.  We are looking for skilled PHP developers to join our team.
(Sorry, that means yes, you'd have to work with me.)  It's a small but
growing company of less than 10 people, all fairly young and geeky. :-)
Experience with PHP (although not necessarily prior work experience) is a
must.

I am ecstatic to be able to tell you all some fantastic news about the
little Chicago PHP Conference I was planning to organize.

It's been canceled.

What?! :-)

Not really canceled, actually.

php|architect owner Marco Tabini called me the other week, and it
turns out THEY have been planning a Chicago PHP Conference in the
Spring as well.

I saw no reason to butt heads with php|architect!

I'm not THAT stupid :-)

Instead I've opted to host a PHP-General Gathering party sometime
during the conference, and ChiPHPug is going to be a SPONSOR of the
conference.

Needless to say, php|arch is going to be able to put on a MUCH better

 We will have a special speaker in October and in order to accommodate his
 schedule we are changing the regular meeting day from Wednesday, Oct
18 to Monday Oct 16th.

 What's possible in a post Web 2.0 world? Innovation continues at a

 presentation will provide an overview of Amazon Web Services, and feature a
 demonstration showing how developers are able to easily utilize on-demand
 server capacity.



  Amazon spent ten years and over $1 billion developing a world-class
 technology and content platform that powers Amazon web sites for millions of
 customers every day. Most people think "Amazon.com" when they hear the word;
 however developers are excited to learn that there is a separate technology
 arm of the company, known as Amazon Web Services or AWS. Using AWS,
 developers can build software applications leveraging the same robust,
 scalable, and reliable technology that powers Amazon's retail business. AWS
 has now launched eleven services with open API's for developers to build
 applications, with the result that over 160,000 developers have registered
 on Amazon's developer site to create applications based on these services..
