While we wait to produce a completely undistorted Miranda texture, I've fiddled with the original by strip-cutting it in latitude, resizing strip by strip and then reassembling. The result is (obviously!) not perfect - the latitude stretch isn't completely constant across each strip, for one thing. But the texture is now acceptably aligned with the IAU locations dataset - although the crater names are not precisely centred in the craters, they do now appear within the rim of the correct crater, rather than several degrees of latitude away. To me, the cosmetics of the texture have not been affected by this manipulation, but as ever I'm braced to be shot down if people feel what I've done is a retrograde step. Re the small locations file: once we've shaken down on the vexed matter of Australia/Australasia, do you want me to commit it to the CVS tree? If so, do you want it in data/ or extras/? My own feeling on the southern continent would be that if "Australasia" is a familiar term in the US, we should go with that, but if North Americans would see it as just a stupid spelling mistake, then I'll cut my losses and use "Australia." I'd rather have Brits thinking my geography is a little bit odd, than Americans thinking I'm overtly dyslexic ;-) Grant |
