Barnard, The person to contact is Chris Laurel claurel@... The current Web site is not hosted on one of his home computers, so it should be more reliable than the old one. Chris has several profit-making projects that occupy much of his time, but you might be able= to persuade him to spend the time getting the forum working again. Hi all, The Celestia website has been back online for sometimes now. However the forum is still not reachable. The forum is the only useful part of that website. There is so much information on this forum on making addons and scripts. If the issue is that the persons in charge of the forum don't have enough free time, I can help fixing/setting up and maintaining the forum. However I would need the database. Anyone having access to that database willing to help? Thank you, Bernard On Wed, Mar 5, 2014 at 5:14 PM, PR@... <pr-celestia@...> wrote: > Hi guys, > > Guckytos here. Hi Fridger, Celestia.Sci is an interesting project. However that does not change the fact that the Celestia forum is an invaluable resource that needs to be preserved (not only for the users/developers of Celestia but also apparently for the users/developers of Celestia.Sci). I am more interested in the Solar System and space mission visualization so I would probably move to Cosmographia ( http://code.google.com/p/cosmographia/ ) but it is still in early development. My main concern at the moment would be making sure Celestia is not forgotten. For this we may just need to make a release with the QT4 GUI (current version seems stable enough). Most Linux distribution still ship 1.6.1 and without Spice support. I was thinking of using the OpenSuse Build Service if I find the time to make packages for many distributions. I would also include latest patches proposed on the mailing list, including 2 I proposed: - support for theora video recording in QT4 GUI - support for more DE4XX ehemerides, support for INPOP ephemerides (this one didn't make it into the SVN) Ideally I would also like to move it to QT5 (longer support, native Wayland support), but I won't find the time. By the way, where are the sources of Celestia.Sci? Shouldn't you make it easier to find them if you want to attract more developers? Do you intend to keep all features of Celestia in Celestia.Sci or do you plan on getting rid of functionalities such as spacecraft trajectory visualization (not related to "deep space/cosmology")? Similarly is it only targeted to astrophysics students/researchers or also to the general public? Thank you, Regards, On Mon, Mar 3, 2014 at 6:30 PM, Fridger Schrempp <fridger.schrempp@...>wrote: > Hi Bernard, > > how about having a look at our CelestialMatters (CM) site, > http://forum.celestialmatters.org/. > > Actually, most serious former members of shatters.net are meanwhile > registered there. Am attempting to compile the 1.6.1 code using Visual Studio C++ 2013....and am getting the following error: 😈 error C2039: 'max' : is not a member of 'std' (This same issue occurs with 'min', but I've omitted its reference here.) This exception is returned at compile-time with a number of C3861 errors ('max': identifier not found). They are recurrent in the following files: solarsys.cppshademanager.cpp(possibly in associated headers; but unavailable for specific citation due to ongoing edits & troubleshooting of the code) I'm including a sample compiler output for reference. NOTE: This is not from unedited code, so it may not be complete. I can roll-back and provide such output if necessary to troubleshoot the issue. 1>------ Build started: Project: celestia, Configuration: Debug Win32 ------1>Build started 15/03/2014 11:13:03 AM.1>InitializeBuildStatus:1> Touching "Debug\celestia.tlog\unsuccessfulbuild".1>ClCompile:1> frustum.cpp1> cmdparser.cpp1> shadermanager.cpp1>src\celengine\shadermanager.cpp(2511): error C3861: 'max': identifier not found1>src\celengine\shadermanager.cpp(2520): error C3861: 'max': identifier not found1>src\celengine\shadermanager.cpp(2566): error C2039: 'max' : is not a member of 'std'1>src\celengine\shadermanager.cpp(2566): error C3861: 'max': identifier not found1> simulation.cpp1> solarsys.cpp1>src\celengine\solarsys.cpp(938): error C3861: 'max': identifier not found1>src\celengine\solarsys.cpp(938): error C3861: 'min': identifier not found1> Generating Code...1>1>Build FAILED.1>1>Time Elapsed 00:00:09.64========== Build: 0 succeeded, 1 failed, 0 up-to-date, 0 skipped ==========15/03/2014 11:13:13 AM: System.ArgumentException: The parameter is incorrect. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x80070057 (E_INVALIDARG)) at EnvDTE.Properties.Item(Object index) at MadsKristensen.EditorExtensions.ProjectHelpers.GetRootFolder(Project project) I also note the following from within the util.h header file, which addresses usage of the min() & max() calls specifically: From l.24 of util.h: #ifdef _WIN32// The Windows header files define min and max macros. We prefer the min and// max templates from STL because they don't result in unexpected multiple// evaluations of arguments. In order to use them, we need to set NOMINMAX// to prevent namespace pollution by the Windows macros.#define NOMINMAX#endif (I found this strange since the .cpp files causing the issues discussed here both exhibit 'using std' statements!) Hi guys, Guckytos here. Here are some news: Chris is having techincal difficulties that he is working on. The forum data is still fully available and not lost. Recent backups also exist. We (the Admins) are still trying to decide on how to proceed in the future. I can only ask you to be patient for a bit longer. John, The Internet archive only has some snapshots of the forums not the forum SQL database. To be able to navigate easily in the forum, we need to use the phpBB software with a copy of the original forum SQL database which cannot be retrieved from snapshots of the internet archive or the Google search engine cache. Dear all, As you are probably aware, the Celestia website ( 216.231.48.101/celestia/ , previously shatters.net/celestia) has been unreachable in the past weeks. The celestia forum is an invaluable resource and it would be sad if its content was lost. Do you know the reasons for the site being unavailable? If the problem is just finding an hosting platform, we could try to set up an account at one of the free hosting service for free projects (such as tuxfamily). I am willing to help with this, however, I don't have a copy of the forum data. Can anyone do something about this? Thank you, Kind regards, |

Dear all, I am looking into having celestia display a satellite whose orbit and attitude are provided in real time over a network socket. The easiest way would be to read the socket from a scriptedOrbit lua script. But this implies that the simulation time updating would be dependent on how frequently the orbit function is called. Also this implies that in a call to orbit the time argument is ignored and the state returned by orbit always corresponds to a later time with respect to the one returned by the previous call, whereas one could request orbit at time t and t+dt in any order to compute the velocity. To avoid these problems, it would be better to have the socket be read from a lua hook that is run in the main Celestia loop. The lua hook would reads from a TCP socket in non blocking mode the following information : - current simulation time - current simulation rate - number of spacecraft - spacecraft 1 ID - epoch for spacecraft 1 state - position vector spacecraft 1 - velocity vector spacecraft 1 - attitude quaternion spacecraft 1 - angular velocity vector spacecraft 1 .... .... - spacecraft n ID - epoch for spacecraft n state - position vector spacecraft n - velocity vector spacecraft n - attitude quaternion spacecraft n - angular velocity vector spacecraft n Each time such a block of data is received: - the actual simulation time would be compared to the one received on the socket and if they differ by more than some epsilon, the simulation time would be reset. - the simulation rate is set - the data (epoch and states) for each spacecraft is stored in some global variables. The scripted orbit called with argument t would then return (position vector spacecraft at epoch)+(velocity vector spacecraft at epoch)*(t-epoch) (we could also imagine a higher order scheme where acceleration or other extrapolation/interpolation parameters are passed via the socket) Similarly the scripted attitude would return the quaternion at epoch rotated after dt=(t-epoch) at provided angular velocity. This scheme requires that the lua hook and the scriptedOrbit, scriptedOrientation share some variables. Unfortunately I have not found a nice way to do this yet without changing the Celestia source code: http://www.shatters.net/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=16873 Therefore I am thinking of adding a new celx command to store variables in a dictionary and retrieve them. This dictionary implemented in C++ in celestia would then be used to share variables across all scripts. What do you think? Is this the right approach? Do you have a better idea on how to do this? Kind regards, |

Hi, up to version 1.5, libpng included <string.h> via png.h. Since 1.6.0 it doesn't do that anymore. As result celestia fails to build with following errors: image.cpp: In function ‘Image* LoadJPEGImage(const string&, int)’: image.cpp:530:61: error: ‘memcpy’ was not declared in this scope For full build log please see downstream bug report [1] Attached patch fixes this issue. Dear all, The current celestia code supports only JPL Big Endian ephemerides DE406/DE405/DE200. The big endian ephemeris DE406 comes in chunk of 300 years. If you want to concatenate several pieces, using the software provided by JPL (which does not handle endianess), you need a big endian platform. The little endian DE406 comes in one piece of 6000 years, so you don't even need to concatenate this one. The patch proposed adds the following: - support for both endianess with autodetection of endianess - support for all JPL DE ephemeris (from DE200) with autodetection of record size. - support for JPL DE compatible ephemeris such as the INPOP ephemeris from Paris observatory (only the ephemeris files in the legacy JPL DE compatible format and with timescale TDB, not the INPOP native format, or the TCB files). http://www.imcce.fr/inpop/download10e.php The method to autodetect ephemeris type, record size and endianess is based on the CALCEPH software. It would probably be better if possible to wrap around the CALCEPH library (so that it would also support INPOP native format) but this would be more work. In addition to the ephemeris number and the start and end date, the record size and endianess are also printed to the log (which you get by pressing the tilde key). If the ephemeris is an INPOP ephemeris, then the ephemeris number is not printed to the log: it just says "INPOP" (I have been too lazy to find out where this is stored). It has been tested with: - DE406 big endian - DE406 little endian - DE405 big endian - DE423 little endian - INPOP10A little endian However, I have not performed any accurate regression testing. I have just checked that the planets orbits do not look strange and that the log is reporting the correct endianess, record size and ephemeris name. Only tested on Linux/x86_64, would appreciate if it could be tested further and eventually be merged. Thank you, |

Here's the patch. It is was generated from the root of: https://celestia.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/celestia/branches/ver1_7_0/celestia via the command: svn diff src/celephem src/celengine Would you prefer separate patch files or is a roll-up patch representing a single change okay? I've compiled a new version of the 1.7 branch code with small changes to the following files: celephem/samporbit.cpp celephem/spiceinterface.cpp celephem/spiceorbit.cpp celephem/samporbit.h celengine/trajmanager.h celengine/trajmanager.cpp celengine/parseobject.cpp How would I go about creating and submitting a patch for review? -- Chris |

Hello, I'm new to Celestia, and wish to participate in and hopefully contribute to Celestia development. Celestia is very impressive. I wish to have a better understanding of the system, and fix bugs for starters. I finished masters degree program in computer science about 1 year ago. I had some experience doing graphics programming, or simple scientific visualization software, but still a fairly green developer. I have close to none knowledge in Astronomy. I'm comfortable with both Windows development environment (VS) or Linux console (vi). I've sync'ed up to trunk, and could build and run it in VS. There seem to be some open bug tickets in the bug tracker. But probably I'm not there yet.. Any suggestion on how I should proceed is much appreciated! Thanks! --Suwen |

These patches were posted 8 (eight!) months before 1.6.1. While i18n patch is not so important, another one that fixes nasty bug with options dialog is been expected to be applied in 'bugfix' release. |

Hi Hleb, I could fix the bugs by applying the patches that come in, but I keep hearing that 1.7.0 is to ship without the GTK interface, but with the Qt interface by default. While I'd like to see the GTK front-end continue, it would really need to get moved to GTK3 to have any future. Last I checked, gtkglext hadn't been ported yet, making it impossible. --Pat |
