I've reproduced the problem, but I added a test to vls for that
specific use and it seems to work.  Can you both get a good mged with
Keith's fix for now?

After seeing Sean's following message, I believe my current vls should
work, but I really need someone to give me the values of the variables
to the failed bu_vls_printf so I can test more thoroughly.
