Thanks to all for the client.php tips and Steffen for the patched
client.php.
Things seem stable again.

However for anyone else with this problem please note that you
should 
**check all your bookmarks before uploading** 
again.  Any corrupted bookmarks will make the client hang.
(perhaps this calls for a patch to reject corrupted bookmarks?)

I think perhaps this was my problem all along (and not the timeout
issue) as I only have about 350 bookmarks.

Steffen: I'm trying to recreate the problem for a logfile for you. 
however, my debug.php file doesn't work.  It just cycles through
the login prompt.  If I login at index.php and then manually browse
debug.php, the toggle option does nothing.  This occurs in both
Firebird and IE6.
