I've been modifying the user parts of bobs to run with register_globals disabled (default in php 4.2.0). That is rather annoying to deal with. Instead of $something I have to deal with $_GET['something'] and $_POST['something'], which is a pain because some things are both GETs and POSTs depending on whether it's a link or a form. I just finished preliminary testing on both php 4.2.2 and 4.1.2 on redhat 7.3 and 8.0. Both work now.=20 The admin interface look like its going to be a rather painful to convert.=20 I haven't done anything to make it work in php versions less than 4.0.6. It should be possible though. -Ren=C3=A9 |

I didn't even know that that existed.=20 I don't know what difference it makes though. To me /etc/crontab is the logical place, but thats probably because I have never heard of another location for crontabs. But I don't really care much about it. As long as its installed and running. -Ren=C3=A9 |

I'm trying to make an rpm of bobs to help make installation and uninstallation easier. I have made the following notes: 1. The password on configuration is a problem. This could be a default password which must be changed by the admin before access is granted to bobs. Either a note on login page that explains which file to edit or by making it possible using the web interface. 2. bobsdata defaults to /usr/local/share/bobsdata. I think /var/bobsdata would be more appropriate. 3. backup.php should be placed in /etc/cron.daily/ on installation. It doesn't harm anything and is essential to making backups. 4. check_loop should be inserted into /etc/crontab on install. Let me know what you think. -Rene |

Could you please try this:
edit the file "inc/class_files.php"
and change line 52 from this:
$this->data = $db->db_fetch_entries ( $indexes, $values );
to this:
$this->data = $db->db_fetch_entries ( $where, $indexes, $values );
I'm not sure this is a complete fix, so I still working on it. You
should be able to browse you files after changing this.
I'll post an update when I figure out if this is the only place that is
broken.

Rene, The folder which i'm trying to backup contains files but i don't seem to be able to see any under the current and the incremental folders. This is the error message i'm getting on the right pane. Warning: Missing argument 3 for db_fetch_entries() in /var/www/html/bobs/inc/class_db.php on line 412 No files were found in First i created the share and then i ran the backup.php script. A few examples of what needs to be changed:
getenv("DOCUMENT_ROOT") is now:
$_SERVER["DOCUMENT_ROOT"]
Variables should be be like this:
before: $username
now: $_POST['username'] (or $_GET['username'] depending on the type of
form method used)
Sessions are a problem too.
to register a session:
if (!$_SESSION['srvcfg']) {
$srvcfg =3D new server();
$_SESSION['srvcfg'] =3D $srvcfg;
}
to use it without changing every instance with refers to it:
$srvcfg =3D &$_SESSION['srvcfg'];
I'm not sure this is a "best pratice" way of doing it, but it worked in
my tests.
Some of this will cause problems with php versions older than 4.0.6
unless we spend some time on making it work in all 4.x versions

I wasn't thinking.. The problem is that I'm using php 4.2.2 now. This means that the new default settings are "register_globals =3D off" and "php_short_tags =3D off". As I think bobs should work out of the box, we'll have to make some adjustments to the code. I'm not sure how much is required though. If you want to test it, just change those two line in php.ini and restart httpd. -Ren=C3=A9 On Mon, 2002-10-14 at 07:11, Rene Rask wrote: >=20 > BOBS seems to have some problems with running on redhat 8 which is using > apache 2. >=20 > The first problem is easy to solve. BOBS seems to have some problems with running on redhat 8 which is using apache 2. The first problem is easy to solve. All php starting tags should be "<?php" instead of just "<?". It is already in most places but not all. It seems there are other problems as well. I had to change some require() lines as well. I'll have to look more into that before I continue. -Rene |

Please make sure you have a few files and directories on the computer you make backups of. Those files should show up when you run the backup.php script. I see the problem but you should not worry much about i right now. It will go away when you have files in your backup. Rene, I've managed to get rid of the php errors which i had earlier. The only error i get now is on the left pane of the frame. This happens when i try to browse through both the current and incremental. I think you need to run the backup before these directories are created.
run the command "php /var/www/html/bobs/cron/backup.php" as root user.
and move backup.php into /etc/cron.daily/ to have it run every night
The install script is not installing a file which is needed.
Edit the file <bobs-sources>/cron/check_loop and change the line:
CMDLOOP_DIR=3D/mnt/tera1/backup/process
to=20
CMDLOOP_DIR=3D/usr/local/share/bobsdata/current/process
(That path should contain a file called "cmdloop")
Copy the "check_loop" file into into
"/usr/local/share/bobsdata/current/process/"
To start the script, insert this line into the file "/etc/crontab"
Now You'll need to make some changes to your /etc/crontab file.
0-59/5 * * * * root /usr/local/share/bobsdata/current/process/check_loop
&
(Please beware of line breaks in the email. The "&" character is the
last part of the line)
now reload the cron configuration.
On Redhat run
"/etc/init.d/crond reload"
This will update the configuration of cron and start the cmdloop script
within 5 minutes.
If you ran backup.php it will start a backup as soon as cmdloop starts.
I hope this helps.

I'll look into making most of this happen on installation.
I checked for the incremental folder, but it's

Rene,
I think there's something very basic that i think i'm doin wrong here. Le=
t
me just run through how i installed, n tell me if there's anything wrong.=
I
just did the ./configure using root with all the default settings n did t=
he
"make install". Since i'll be doin back up for samba files only i didn't
install nfs or rsync. Then i logged on to the admin.php and added a new
share with the "create backup of this server checked". After creating all
that i tried loggin in as the specified user and tried to browse through =
but
i'm getting the DBA errors. I checked for the incremental folder, but it'=
s
not created anywhere in the system. Do i have to manually create this
folders or the installation script does all this ? For every new share fr=
om
a different client computer a new folder with the name of the computer wi=
ll
be created under the backup director rite ?
This is the output from the instalaltion

There's an NFS utility that you can buy from Microsoft that lets Windows
use NFS. NFS doesn't come standard with Windows.
> So this utility is installed on the computer running BOBS ?
It's installed on the Windows computer that you want to backup via NFS.
But samba is much easier to use if you're backing up a Windows machine.
> N can you guide me the way to download the current CVS source.
Here's how to get a copy of the current CVS source tree:
cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/bobs login
When prompted for a password, just press Enter.
cvs -z3 -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/bobs co bobs
cvs -d:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/bobs logout
The instructions are also at http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=54656,
under "Anonymous CVS Access".

I think so too, that's why I joined Rene's project.
P.S. Please send emails to bob...@li... , that way
everyone gets to see it.

You have an nfs share like this someserver:/data/work Then the path you should fill in is "/data/work" because the is the nfs share path. If you're backing up Windows computers and you aren't using the Windows nfs utilities, which I assume you're not, then nfs won't work for you. You will need to download the current CVS source and run the install from that, it has support for samba. Or you can wait for the next release of BOBS to download. If you need help downloading from the CVS repository, please ask, I have the instructions for that somewhere around here... >And also "How many incrementals to keep ( 0 = infinite )" ? > >Thanks > > > Each incremental backup is stored somewhere that takes up disk space. I think this means to keep only the last 'x' number of incemental backups and delete the older ones. I'm not sure if that is actually implemented though. Perhaps the BOBS creater, Rene Rask, will verify my answers for you. I appreciate you taking the time to try BOBS and ask questions. Please feel free to ask as much as you want. Joe > > >>Yes. Yes. The linux machine just runs the backup. You can backup any Windows machine (and other types) on the network, as long as the directory to be backed up is shared. In the BOBS admin interface on the linux machine, specify the windows computer, the share name, and "smb" for the type of share. If you actually try this, please let us know if you have more questions and/or how it worked. We're getting ready for a new release of BOBS that should make the setup a little easier. Hello, I'm a newbie. I'm just wondering if BOBS works with a windows machine. What i mean is that running BOBS on a linux box but the datas are pulled from a windows machine to be backed up. If can, how is it done. Thanks |

I hadn't even considered using trees as a way to select them, very good idea. My real problem is that some files are really tricky to get right because they use weird characters. And there is the trick of understanding how rsync excludes files. What bothers me about having admins do selecting the files is that they mostly select the same files. It would a cool thing to have an online update function which could pass new files to a database and download other from it (dreaming here...). That would seem like a good aim to me. Not to be implemented at once, but to be considered when making it. I think it would be quite a challenge to design a useful editor for rsync exclude files. That is, an editor which allows new patterns to be created, not selecting them from a list. Wheee.. I love challenges ;-) In other news: I've begun moving the last (I think) templates out of the source files. Once that is done I'll either start with link files or do some more code clean ups. As always, please let me know if there is any code you'd like to see comments on. Then I'll clean it up and add comments. -Rene > Rene Rask wrote: > > >I've been pondering how to solve the issues with link files and exludes. > > > >It seems to me that it would make sense to make this package based. If you mean that a list of packages and files to exclude within each package are distributed with BOBS, then I'd say there are too many applications out there to even try to attempt to cover a small portion of them. But, if you mean to provide a page where the admin could create a package and select the exclude files for that package, then yeah, that sounds good, especially if the admin could pick the exclude files from a tree view. Excluding files from backups is a hassle for the admin with just about any type of backup system. I've been pondering how to solve the issues with link files and exludes. It seems to me that it would make sense to make this package based. A package could be a software program. Examples: Netatalk makes some files which are needed for proper operation. They could be in a package which the admin ticks as active. Then those files are not included when making a backup. Likewise Maya has some files which in most cases are not wanted. The problem with having admins make those lists by themselves is that some filename are really tricky to get right (check the current exlude list for an example). Making packages would make it easier to maintain and update the lists. This ofcourse is another admin page that needs doing. I'll start looking into it. Please let me know if you have any thoughts on this. -Rene |

> * I need to look at using the rfasttemplate class. That is really an easy class to work with I peeked at your new class_assign and as far as I can see it would be trivial to use rfastemplate instead of doing html in the class. Check restore_files() in class_restore for an example. and the link to the tutorial in case you lost it. http://www.astrofoto.org/people/roland/rFT/tutorial.html Please out templates in the templates dir. I think we should make some sort of naming convention for templates. Not sure which though :\ -Rene |
