Some people just feel like to have old version hanging around, because some old(but important) software can not be compiled with gcc.2.95.1, an example I came across is IBM Data Explorer-4.06. What I did is installing it under my home directory , in my case it's under ~/local/packages/EGCS/gcc-2.95.1, and then I do setenv PATH "$HOME/local/packages/EGCS/gcc-2.95.1:${PATH}" setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH "$HOME/local/packages/EGCS/gcc-2.95.1/lib:$HOME/local/packages/EGCS/gcc-2.95.1/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/2.95.1:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH}" in my .cshrc file. If you use bash, it would look like PATH=$HOME/local/packages/EGCS/gcc-2.95.1:$PATH LD_LIBRARY_PATH=$HOME/local/packages/EGCS/gcc-2.95.1/lib:$HOME/local/packages/EGCS/gcc-2.95.1/lib/gcc-lib/i686-pc-linux-gnu/2.95.1:$LD_LIBRARY_PATH export PATH export LD_LIBRARY_PATH in your .bashrc or .bashrc_local . This way the system's default egcs-1.1.2 is overriden by gcc-2.95.1 in your home directory. Hope it'll help in your case.
