Create an alliance, have several people join it.

Leave it nominating someone else as the new leader.

Reload the alliances page to confirm that you are indeed
in no alliance.

Create a new alliance with just yourself , only to find
yourself back in your old alliance.

followup: am currently in no alliance but am still getting
messages sent by members of the first alliance if they sent it
to the whole alliance.
