Well, yes, it should be possible.
Even a Windows-version as "Service" could make sense -if someone does it
and maintains it.
It just shouldn't break anything existing (i.e. use conditional
compiler-flags)

Well done with an installer (i.e. NSIS
http://nsis.sourceforge.net/Main_Page) it could be even a big success
for "normal users".
