Hi all, Good news. SheepShaver is up and running MacOS 8.5 under Mandriva linux, KDE 3.5.4, Core2 Duo processor. What did I change ? As I indicated in my earlier emails to the group, I was *unable* to mount the MacOS 8.5 disk on my linux system using the following command mount -t hfs /dev/hda /mnt/cdrom I took a shot at something different . . . . I used the hmount command to mount it. hmount /dev/hda I hadn't considered doing this previously, since while I had found that while it mounted the disk 'locally' (the hmount manual says . . . . "hmount does not actually mount an HFS partition over a UNIX directory in the traditional mount(8) sense. It is merely a "virtual" mount, as a point of convenience for future HFS operations"), this meant that I couldn't access those files other than from command line. Anyway, to cut a long story short, once the CD had been mounted as described above, then SheepShaver started, formating of the hard file and installation of MacOS 8.5 became rather straight forward. Hope this helps. Andrew |

Hi, My apologies for any confusion. In the original e-mail, I referred to a Mac= =20 Performa 5600. I should of course have said Performa 5260. Version of Mac OS 9 later than 9.0.4 require a hardware MMU unit, which SheepShaver does not emulate. To support these operating systems, additional code must be added to emulate the MMU (Memory Management Unit). -Alexei Svitkine |

I would like to know why there is a limitation to Mac OS 9.0.4 in Sheepshaver and if there is a way to use 9.2.2. We use a software (Helix database) who need 9.2.2 and want to move to Macs with Intel processors. We absolutely need Helix so we cannot do the move until we have a solution. Thanks for your help ! Hi, The system environment is: x86_64 (Mandriva 2007, running on a Dual-Core-2 system); gcc 4.1.1 kernel 2.6.17-13 SheepShaver-2.2-20050321.tar.bz2 BasiliskII_src_31052001.tar.gz BasiliskII configures and makes OK. If I then cd SheepShaver ./autogen.sh, the script proceeds to its end, without problems. If I then cd src/Unix NO_CONFIGURE=3D1 ACLOCAL_FLAGS=3D"-I m4" ./autogen.sh the result is as expected I, however, I then run ./configure, the script fails to recognize my system and aborts. Here's the output from ./configure: [andrew@localhost Unix]$ ./configure checking build system type... Invalid configuration `x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu': machine `x86_64-unknown' not recognized configure: error: /bin/sh ./config.sub x86_64-unknown-linux-gnu failed [andrew@localhost Unix]$ Is there an option I can pass to the 'configure', that would enable the script to proceed beyond this point please ? Cheers, Andrew PS: I have also tried the CVS version of SheepShaver. ./configure proceeds further than the version described above, but still fails to complete. Here's the tail end of the configure output from the CVS version of SheepShaver: checking for linux/fb.h... yes checking for XF86DGAQueryExtension in -lXxf86dga... yes checking for XF86VidModeQueryExtension in -lXxf86vm... yes ./configure: line 7143: syntax error near unexpected token `newline' ./configure: line 7143: ` gthread' [andrew@localhost Unix]$ I'd welcome & appreciate your suggestions as to how to proceed from here. |

I am a non-techie who is utterly confused by the installation instructions for SheepShaver. I currently run two desktop computers, a G4 and a G5, and switch between them. The G4 boots in OS9. When traveling, I also use two computers, one an Intel MacBook Pro; the other a Titanium Powerbook, which boots in OS9. SheepShaver would obviously make my life a lot easier. I have purchased an old Macintosh Performa for the ROM image. Is there anyone out there who can help me (for a reasonable price) install SheepShaver in my newer models? (I'm planning to upgrade my desktop to an Intel system if I can get SheepShaver up and running.) I'm in the West Valley area of Los Angeles -- in Agoura Hills -- but can meet anywhere. -- Lew Irwin STUDIO BRIEFING st...@us... (818) 865-0044 Fax: (815) 333-2765 |

thank you for your quick reply ! yes out here (bookprinting company) we=92ve been using basilisk II for ages already ! because we need to = load daily PS-fonts with hp-util to a printer for use with an amos (alpha-microsystem) ! We=92 ve not ever experienced any problem at all with the basilisk ethernet-driver at all ! I=92ve tried out even with = fake mac-adress and everything keeps working perfectly ! But no luck with SS at all, when I use lan-connection, basilisk II driver , the apple logo appears and vanishes immediately ! when i use slirp networking, SS does boot but euh no networking at all with all settings possible tried ! (and belief me I really tried every possible setting, as I play sort of networkadmin. here at work !) The only way SS can be used in our network would be a working version with basilisk II driver ! Naturally, I appreciate the focus on the macosx platform, just a real pitty for us here as we are stuck with windows and it would be fantastic to use SS in stead of basilisk, as we are in a framemaker flow too here ! hey there, first of all congratulations for all you've done in the emulationscene for all of us ! daily i follow messages at the emaculation-forum ! people there start thinking that Sheepshaver isn't worked on by its developper anymore, and that the chances on any updates would be practically nihil, which is understandable as it has almost become a worthy stable application. But at the forum you will read that most people (as myself to) are having the greatest difficulties in getting network working ! Yeah I know that in linux or osx platform the difficulties are bypassed by slirp settings ! but here at work we are obliged to use basilisk II with its ethernetdriver to load fonts to a HP printer for use on a amos (alpha-micro)-system ! And of course most of us are poor windows users with very little knowledge ! If just you could find a way for us to use the basilisk-ethernet driver for windows without SS exiting or crashing ! so that in a lan-environment (mac-win) we could forget about basilisk as it isn't powerpc compat. hope didn't ask to much and if due lack of time or any other reason, for you this would be inpossible, I will understand that too, I'm already in your debt for how it works right now Thx. in avance and for everything JM. Hi folks, I made a prefs editor in Cocoa for SheepShaver on Mac OS X. Its much more useable than the "SheepShaverGUI" that comes with SheepShaver on the Mac. Grab it at: http://fizzysoft.net/get.php?f=SheepShaverPrefs.zip To use it, simply drop it into your SheepShaver folder, and it works like SheepShaverGUI, but better. Hi all, This is a "Printing using Sheepshaver" question. I use one program that only runs in Mac OS 9 from which I need to print. Currently I print with a USB printer using Classic mode in Mac OS X. If I bought an Intel Mac and use SheepShaver, would I be able to hook up the HP printer using USB and print from my OS9 program using SheepShaver? Mark |

Greetings. First of all, thanks to the developers for what I'm sure has been a lot of hard work. I just got a new iMac and am delighted to have a classic Mac OS box running on it. Now, onto the bugs: I'm running SheepShaver 2.3-Pre (2006/05/14) for MacOS X Intel, booting 8.5 with the ROM from ROM Update 1.0. The "Unix" volume doesn't show up in the Finder or Standard File. I was surprised to discover that I was actually able to access it using one of my own utilities. I haven't checked this out yet, but maybe the root directory has the Invisible bit set. I then noticed that I had to encode files (e.g. using MacBinary) in order to get them through the extfs translation unscathed. It turns out that SheepShaver is not byte-swapping the type and creator codes, so TEXT files become TXET, APPLications are LPPA, etc. Hilarity ensues. Perhaps the invisible volume problem is byte-order-related as well. I don't know if this is related, but a different utility of mine was getting volume-not-found errors (OSErr -35) when calling FindFolder() to get the Temporary Items folder (on the 'appropriate' volume, not "Unix"). My workaround is not to call FindFolder(). I now have my build tool running inside SheepShaver! :-) Again, thanks for the amazing work. You probably won't hear this from me as often as you deserve it, but please bear in mind that I only report bugs in the first place on projects that have earned my respect and admiration, which this one certainly has. Hi, Have you tried to install a package by some name like "readlinecompat" ? It should provide SheepShaver with the neccessary tool, but I don't know if it is available on your distro. And about your networking problems: turn of networking for now. You can find information on how to build the sheep_net driver (and other networking options) at: http://gwenole.beauchesne.info/en/projects/sheepshaver/help/networking The emaculation forum at http://www.emaculation.com/forum has gathered a lot of information on how to run mac emulators and is visited by more users able to help. >From: Pomeroy Lab <ad...@mi...> >Reply-To: Discussions related to the development of Basilisk II ><bas...@li...> >To: bas...@li... >Subject: [B2-devel] I still need some help here. >Date: Tue, 7 Nov 2006 11:48:36 -0800 (PST) >MIME-Version: 1.0 >Received: from lists-outbound.sourceforge.net ([66.35.250.225]) by >bay0-mc3-f8.bay0.hotmail.com with Microsoft SMTPSVC(6.0.3790.2444); Tue, 7 >Nov 2006 11:48:50 -0800 >Received: from sc8-sf-list2-new.sourceforge.net (unknown [10.3.1.94])by >sc8-sf-spam2.sourceforge.net (Postfix) with ESMTPid AA37C12CF2; Tue, 7 Nov >2006 11:48:49 -0800 (PST) >Received: from sc8-sf-mx2-b.sourceforge.net >([10.3.1.92]helo=mail.sourceforge.net)by sc8-sf-list2-new.sourceforge.net >with esmtp (Exim 4.43)id 1GhWwA-00075d-KQ for >bas...@li...;Tue, 07 Nov 2006 11:48:46 -0800 >Received: from web506.biz.mail.mud.yahoo.com ([209.191.86.217])by >mail.sourceforge.net with smtp (Exim 4.44) id 1GhWwA-0005gP-JPfor >bas...@li...;Tue, 07 Nov 2006 11:48:47 -0800 >Received: (qmail 69758 invoked by uid 60001); 7 Nov 2006 19:48:36 -0000 >Received: from [207.109.183.73] by web506.biz.mail.mud.yahoo.com via >HTTP;Tue, 07 Nov 2006 11:48:36 PST >X-Message-Info: LsUYwwHHNt20nbBdLLTfqTYdFoJdGTgCw1zyT1nb8xg= >X-Spam-Score: 0.1 (/) >X-Spam-Report: Spam Filtering performed by sourceforge.net.See >http://spamassassin.org/tag/ for more details.Report problems >tohttp://sf.net/tracker/?func=add&group_id=1&atid=2000010.0 HTML_MESSAGE > BODY: HTML included in message0.1 HTML_00_10 BODY: >Message is 0% to 10% HTML >X-BeenThere: bas...@li... >X-Mailman-Version: 2.1.8 >Precedence: list >List-Id: Discussions related to the development of Basilisk >II<basilisk-devel.lists.sourceforge.net> >List-Unsubscribe: ><https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/basilisk-devel>, ><mailto:bas...@li...?subject=unsubscribe> >List-Archive: ><http://sourceforge.net/mailarchive/forum.php?forum=basilisk-devel> >List-Post: <mailto:bas...@li...> >List-Help: ><mailto:bas...@li...?subject=help> >List-Subscribe: ><https://lists.sourceforge.net/lists/listinfo/basilisk-devel>, ><mailto:bas...@li...?subject=subscribe> >Errors-To: bas...@li... >Return-Path: bas...@li... >X-OriginalArrivalTime: 07 Nov 2006 19:48:51.0109 (UTC) >FILETIME=[BF9F3550:01C702A5] > >I am using FC6 32 bit on a 64 bit computer.
