Hope this mailing list is still active! I stumbled across the Babelchat program while surfing the Web. I wanted to mention that I had seen something like this before. The MITRE Corporation is a defense firm that developed something called TrIM, Translating Instant Messenger. I don't know a lot about it, but it's supposed to do something similar to Babelchat. Try going to www.mitre.org and searching for TrIM (or maybe for CT2). I know MITRE has sometimes been a proponent of free software, but I don't know if they've released the source code for TrIM. There might be something there you could use or someone who could help. Good luck! Joe V. |

Hello,
I am having a few difficulties getting babelchat to run and I suspect
that my problems are newbie related issues!!!
When I run this command
/usr/java/j2sdk1.4.1_02/bin/java babelchat.server.ChatServer babelchat/server/conf/server.conf
I get this error message

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/apache/soap/util/xml/XMLParserLiaison
at babelchat.server.ServerClass.connectTransServer(ServerClass.java:212)
at babelchat.server.ServerClass.<init>(ServerClass.java:59)
at babelchat.server.ChatServer.main(ChatServer.java:19)
Now, I am assuming that the XMLParserLiaison reference means that I
don't have that class listed....
Can anyone help by detailing what I have to do in order to get
babelchat up and running?

Hello, I am interested in trying to install your server in a Windows environment (Windows 2000 to be more specific) with a MS-SQL2k database. I was wondering if a) you think it will work and b) if you might be able to offer any assistance, as I am not much of a Java programmer (yet, anyway). I tried using some of the /(slash) commands with the admin user. I get an error while using some commands like /create, /destroy,/mod and /unmod. It would be very kind of you if you you could let me know whether these features are actually implemented and known to be working. Thanks for you reply. I have found another way to do it. I create a text
boxt to let the member to enter a new topic and then post to to the applet
main page and set the parameter for the "channel" to the new topics. This
work fine for me because what I need is just a temporary topic for the
member.

You want to let users set the topic, right? This will give regular users permission to run the /topic command. Open the babelchat database with mysql. mysql babelchat then run this SQL statement. mysql> update perms set set_topic=1 where perms_name='member'; Restart the server, should work.
