I can vouch for this device - I just got one a few days ago. You do need to get access to a Windows box in order to download the JTAGICE firmware into it before the first run, but that is pretty painless. The hardest part for me was getting access to a Windows machine to do the update in the first place since all I have around here are FreeBSD and Mac OS X. After loading the JTAGICE firmware using AVR Studio, AVaRICE uses the device just fine. At least I was able to test out support for the AT90CAN128 chip using it, which works.
