Hello,
After about 16 hours of debugging, I've finally realised why my vanilla kernel 2.6.24.7 panics as soon as I try to mount an aufs filesystem from a customized knoppix environment:
CONFIG_SLOB
When I change it back to SLUB, everything works okay, SLOB causes an oops and panic combo.
I'm using aufs 20080512 (pretty fresh cvs checkout) compiled as a module without debugging as the only other modification against the kernel in Ubuntu Hardy (32-bit).
Interestingly, I can load the module and it shows up in /proc/filesystems okay, it's just on use of a read only loopback iso9660 filesystem that things go pear shaped. Here's the command that causes the crash:
# mount -t aufs -o "br:/ramdisk:/KNOPPIX" /UNIONFS /UNIONFS
The directory /KNOPPIX is the loop mounted iso 9660 filesystem (from Knoppix's cloop), /ramdisk is a tmpfs.
My workaround for now is to use SLUB, but this build was for a very trim environment.

It may be related to the bug recently Mark A. Grondona found and fixed.
Please try the latest version which I updated just a few minutes ago.
And I hope you would join aufs-users ML and post to it.
Because I don't use this Public Forum on SF.
