Are we talking a linear frequency scale here?  It already has the  amplitude 
in dB.
 
Why do Audacity effects have such a small range on the dB scale?  The  FFT 
Filter only has +-12dB, Amplify can only do 24dB at a time etc.  Is  this a 
deliberate plan or what?

One of the major complaints always was that the FFT filter effect  has a 
linear scale, but then again it seems to me that this is more of a  
user-interface issue... maybe the effect could have two modes or  so.
