Hi Martyn I've had a few comments about Contrast Tool that suggest we might want to consider selecting background first (and have it top of the dialogue) - it's only three people out of five, but it was the only comment that came up more than once. The issue seems to be that if people using it are familiar with Noise Removal, they may think they are selecting the "noise" or "background" first in Contrast too, despite what the Contrast dialogue says. Hi Gale
In the next few days I'm going to take a thorough look at the audio contrast
tool. Martin said he found a way to make it non-Modal which is fantastic
news, so there are a few things I'd like to check on. I'll look at the ides
of background first issue too. Thanks.

Thanks, David. Don't forget the modal Contrast Tool isn't released yet - you'll need the latest Alpha build from the usual place: http://audacityteam.org/wiki/index.php?title=Nightly_Builds If a Windows installer is essential rather than a zip, please ask. One question I have on the modal Contrast Tool is if it could start with a lower x, y position. If the starting position was only, say 60 px lower, you could in some cases see enough of the topmost track to select from it without having to move it around first as now. Remind me too, is "for measuring rms volume differences between two selections of audio" not at the top because of screen readers babbling away? If the title bar or heading said "Contrast Analysis (WCAG 2 compliance)", the Help button could just say "WCAG 2 Help" and we might be able to lose 60 px off the height of the dialogue. HI Gale I believe you mean non- modal right? Non modal allows the dialogue box to remain open while parts are being selected. http://www.programmersheaven.com/2/FAQ-WinForm-Modal-Non-Modal And that is what I believe Martyn has been able to achieve. WCAG 2.0 is out now and is an accepted W3C standard. It is being implemented across the globe, so it is great that we have a way to measure audio contrast. Hi Gale
Please refresh my memory on how to install the daily builds.
I tried extracting all the DLL's and the EXE into the Audacity directory
C:\Program Files\Audacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode)
and running the exe which I thought I did last time I was testing. But
that's not working this time. I have XP an I downloaded the Unicode.
Cheers

Yes it's so much better modeless now, but I hope we can consider
moving it slightly out of the way or make it less tall as I suggested.

E-Ramp in Conjunction with Trace Research and Martyn Shaw created the Audio Contrast Analyser is a tool in Audacity to measure foreground speech against background noise. It helps ensure that people who are hard of hearing can hear the speech of an audio recording, and checks to see if the background noise, whatever it may be, is at least 20 dBs less than the speech. Martin has done a great job at making the Audacity Audio Contrast Analyser non-modal. So I've updated the help file for it, which is online, linked from the Help button of the Audio Contrast Analyser Dialogue Box. The new help file can also be found directly here: http://www.eramp.com/WCAG_2_audio_contrast_tool_help.htm Cheers David MacDonald www.eramp.com |

Hi Ian I honestly don't know the RMS formula used by Audacity. Perhaps Martyn does, but my sense is that it is a Global functional measurement in Audacity that can be called upon by any application within Audacity, and I expect our application just used that, rather than being written into our code for our little contrast analyser function. You may also want to post on the Audacity developers message board, they may have an answer. aud...@li... For our purposes in developing the contrast tool it was sufficient to know it is an "average" RMS, and we trust that those calculations are correct. Cheers David MacDonald -----Original Message----- From: Ian Benton [mailto:ia...@th...] Sent: May-24-11 1:43 PM To: David MacDonald Subject: Re: Contrast Tool Thanks. I know it's an obvious question: you take each sample, square the value, sum them, divide by the number of samples, take the log to the base 10 and then multiply by 10, but if I use the software to collect evidence someone in authority will try to suggest that the evidence wasn't collected correctly, and I'll have to show that it is right. Ian I'm not sure why you need proof that the algorithm is correct, but here are some pointers where to find it. The short answer is that we pre-compute the rms levels for short sections of audio for use in the meter etc., and I re-used those for the Contrast Analyser. We combine them (and calculate the new bits as required) in a way that boils down to what you describe. The code for the Contrast Analyser is here http://code.google.com/p/audacity/source/browse/audacity-src/trunk/src/effects/Contrast.cpp When the 'Measure Foreground/Background' button is pressed, the GetDB function is called (line 95 in Contrast.cpp). This in turn calls GetRMS(&rms, mT0, mT1) on the wavetrack. This code is found in line 1572 of http://code.google.com/p/audacity/source/browse/audacity-src/trunk/src/WaveTrack.cpp which in turn calls GetRMS(&cliprms, t0, t1) (in WaveClip.cpp) on each clip (short section of audio). This is a function that has been in Audacity a long time and returns the rms value of the section of a clip. It does this by calling GetRMS(s0, s1-s0, rms) (line 265 in Sequence.cpp). That uses the pre-computed values. Bits that we want to add on that are not in a whole pre-computed block are computed at this point with http://code.google.com/p/audacity/source/browse/audacity-src/trunk/src/BlockFile.cpp#384 where you can see the samples being squared and added (line 403) the division by the length and the sqrt (line 410). This is the same code that is used to do the pre-computing. When blocks are combined at each level of the process the rms values are squared, multiplied by their length, added together and then divided by the new length and sqrted again to give the new rms, for example around http://code.google.com/p/audacity/source/browse/audacity-src/trunk/src/WaveTrack.cpp#1591 In Contrast.cpp we do the dB calculation in line 130, of course its 20*log10 since we have rms and you described ms. This will all work with a single piece of audio read in from a wav file etc.. There are some comments in the code about how to possibly make it give the wrong result, but these are not for the tyro - easier to edit the results file! Or you could make a square and a sine of the same amplitude and see a 3dB difference, or a square and a sawtooth and see a 4.8dB difference etc.. HI Gale
I've tried to install from the installer 3 times, but no luck.
It says it's running but when I open a list of all programs that are running
I get nothing.
Are you sure that installer is OK?
Cheers

You don't install them because they are just a zip file, not an
installer. Copying the entire contents of the zip into your
current installation folder is easier - you will only overwrite
existing files with the same name, so you won't lose for
example any additional plug-ins you have in the Plug-Ins
folder.
The Unicode zip is working fine - I just downloaded it and ran it.
Many testers prefer to simply extract the zip file to a separate
folder and run it as a standalone.
Anyway I built an installer for you:
http://www.gaclrecords.org.uk/audacity-1.3.8-win-unicode.exe
This will install to C:\Program Files\Audacity 1.3 Beta (Unicode).

It installed fine on my laptop... so something's up with my desktop. I
suspect I got into some trouble with previous installations which are
messing it up, or something. it wasn't in safe mode... but no matter... I
can do the testing on my laptop...

Are you running in Safe Mode? 1.3.8 does not support that, though
previous Betas do. It may well be a PortAudio problem, which
makes it difficult to fix. If this is the problem, just boot into full
Windows functionality. You need that for access to the sound device.

Here are my comments on the audio tool now that it has Non- modal. First
comment: "It is 10 times better now that it is non-modal. Way to go Martyn!"
Naturally, now that it's non-modal, there are a few thing that we should
change because previous problems of it being modal have been overcome and we
can make it easier to understand and use and more standard with the way
other audio plug-ins are used.
-- Let's not have the "Contrast tool Foreground" alert come up anymore for
any reason. Let's always have the shortcut Ctl+shft+T open the main
dialogue... Same for when the dialogue box is opened and closed and then
opened again... we can dump the alert boxes.
-- Related to the last item. I think that the main dialogue box should come
up right away when the tool is selected from the menu. The reason we didn't
do that before was that the dialogue box was modal and would not allow a
section to be made with the mouse. But now that it's non-modal it would be
more intuitive to open the main dialogue when "contrast" is selected from
the menu, making it like all other plug ins. The dialogue box can be open
all the time when using the tols insead of opening and closing.
-- Currently when the tool is opened, it inputs the selected audio in the
foreground and background times. Let's not use the audio selection that has
been selected as the foreground and background. We can just leave the
selection of foreground and background blank. Once the dialogue box is open
the user can start using the tool and can select what they want rather than
defaulting to anything, because the defaults currently end up in the
foreground *and* background and that is confusing and they have to delete
one.
Regarding Gale's design suggestions
-- As Gale suggests no problem from my perspective to position the dialogue
box lower on the x,y axis when it opens,.
-- Gale asks: "for measuring rms volume differences between two selections
of audio" not at the top because of screen readers babbling away?
It would be better at the top as you say. I think that information would be
useful for screen readers and it would not be annoying or too chatty. So I
like the suggestion.
-- Gale says: If the title bar or heading said "Contrast Analysis (WCAG 2
compliance)", the Help button could just say "WCAG 2 Help" and we might be
able to lose 60 px off the height of the dialogue.
I'm fine with that. and just have the "WCAG 2 Help" button without the
surrounding "information" box too which would save a bit more space. Related
to that, in the bottom right there is an area that says "control" and it has
the button "close (keeping times)" in it. What if the button simply said
"close" . (it would be positioned on the same horizontal as the "help for
WCAG2 ..." button to the left of it.) Above it there could be a check box
with text beside it that says "keep data?" or "keep times?" ... Checking
the box means yes.
Once we make all the adjustments I'll adjust the help file.

Are you running in Safe Mode? 1.3.8 does not support that, though
previous Betas do. It may well be a PortAudio problem, which
makes it difficult to fix. If this is the problem, just boot into full
Windows functionality. You need that for access to the sound device.
