The only archive format that existed on Atari for years was ARC.
Last year "xunzip 2.0" was released which uncompresses ZIP, GZ, TAR
and TGZ (tar.gz). There is also an Atari utility to uncompress LHA / LZH.

Windows Explorer (in Win Me, 2000, XP and newer) supports ZIPs
as "compressed folders" which are handled similarly to real folders.
This probably means that emulators don't need to do it themselves.
