I can't believe we are still fixing bugs in Atari800, thirty years later. Man, I already thought it was perfect, way back in the 1990s. :-) Heck, I'm still running v2.2.1 here, mainly because none of the changes made since then have addressed anything I've found it necessary to address -- ironically, though, while neglecting the one area I would have liked to have seen improved thirty years ago (see below). All else being equal, I would make the changes I want, myself. Unfortunately, since the days when I added code to get v1-dot-something running on DECwindows under VAX/VMS, virtually everything about programming has changed to the point where I find almost everything about it today incomprehensible, from the tools to the languages to the mindset -- which frustrates and angers me -- and I find both Windows and Linux completely unusable as programming platforms (other than good old Perl), which breaks my heart. But what can you do? Time marches on Fix printing and P: support, though, will you? v2.2.1 still launches an external commandline every time the P: device is opened -- such as on every BASIC LPRINT statement! Talk about crude! You wouldn't believe what I have to go through, to collect successive lines of printer output into a single file on the host system -- and then I've had to start writing my own Epson dot-matrix printer emulator (in Perl) just to see again the output of certain Atari BASIC programs I wrote in the late 1980s. If anybody would care to add a couple of user interface features that would clean this up entirely, I have some ideas... If you do it, I might even tentatively try whatever new version of Atari800 finally incorporated the fixes! Yeah, I could dining switch to Altirra-with-Fujinet -- but that, too, is far too complex and I prefer the simplicity of my ancient version of Atari800.
